SPeration ones to warrant fivally the adoption of sound “This is quidstion for the consideration of the head of the War Department, avd of the Presi- dent, who by the constitution is made the legal and responsible Commander-in Chief of the army and navy. It is to be hoped that a new leaf will be ti , and that a fatal blow will be etruck in Virginia or Tennessee, or both, before the warm weather paral yes military operations. Tue Lave Foxny Newsparer Riot i Pamd- PELrHiA.—The proprietors of the Philadelphia Age ought to be greatly obliged to the parties ‘who were concerned in getting up the late flasco of @ riot against that eslablisament. There is nothing which helps a new journal more than ‘an abortive attempt of this kind. ‘The Age, which has been started only a few weeks, would have had up hill work before it but for this lucky circumstance. People will now ask for and read it who otherwise might never have seen it. Let it not be inferred from this that the Age is without qualities to recommend it. [t is, on the contrary, in a literary sense, one of the best, if not the very best, journal that has beon established in that one horse city, Phiiadelphia. Its conductor is Mr. Francis J. Grund, a gentle- man of high literary attainments, an aecom- plished linguist, and a correspondeut of several of the leading European newspapers. He has also had loug experience politician, and no one is better acquainted with the spriags of our Political machinery and with tlio iieu who move them. In the arrangements and manage:nent of his new enterprise he has, however, conmitted some errors. He is, in the first place, a little too | copperhead and too gencral in his denunciations of the administration—a serious blunderforaman | ‘ofhis experience. The acts of the Cabinet should | be judged separately on their merits, aud with reference strictly to the objects to be attained. Where they afford grounds for censure it should be visited upon them; where they admit of ap- proval it should not be withheld. When a con- trary course is pursued the effect of just criticism is lost. Another mistake which Mr. Grund bas committed is that of associuting ‘with him in his undertaking a team—not a team ike that of Bonner, of the Ledyer, but a couple of vulgar and ignorant politicians, who, aa a | claes, rarely or ever run smoothly in harness, and who will certainly upsct’it uniess he can @anage to keep them well under control. This is no easy matter, as we kaow to our cost. Some thirty years ago we tried our hand at it in Philadelphia under similar conditioua. We had our team, and pretty tight pulling it Was. Disgusted at last with the vulgurity, ig- morance and impudence of the politicians, who fought to use us for their own dirty purposes, we kicked over the concern and came on to New York. Here, when singly and unaided we started a new enterprise, the same game tried with us. Political adventurers, find- that we could promote their views, made sorts of cea to us, We had had » however, of the cortupt crew, and, them at arm's length, pureued an in- mt course, neither caring for their wns nor their favors. The result proved the wisdom of our determination. To it is to be attributed in a great measure the unexampled ie tions with which they are allied. It was re- eerved for us to show that a newspaper, all such trammels and consulting only the general good, can alone reap the re- wards of extensive patronage. We make Mr. Grund « present of our experience. It only re- quires that and a little more moderation in his criticism of the acts of the administration to render his journal as much respected in a po- ditical as it is estimable in a literary point of view. ++ Tux Minrrary Tatat oy Mr. VaLLannicuas.— Tn another part of this journal we publish the sdetails of the military trial of Mr. Vallandig- ham. We have often given our opinion as re- gards the peculiar views of this gentleman, and denounced them as absurd. We however can ‘but say that we consider the arrest and trial of Mr. Vallandigham equally as absurd and ridica- ous on the part of the administration asany act of bis which has ever come to our knowledge. We discussed freely the Confiscation act, as well as the Conscription act, before they were passed. ‘We were opposed to them in a measure; but, now that they have become law, we support ‘them in all fairness and patriotism. We can- not understand why Mr. Vallandigham should ‘be made to undergo a military trial because he saw fit to denounce certain acts of the govern- ment. Even our constitution a citizen may dis -cuss if he pleases, and may state where he sees opportunity for amendment. Why then should all discussion upon the acts of the government tbe interdicted? We consider the arrest and trial of Mr. Val- Jandigham a gross wrong done to individual rights, and wonder that Mr. Lincoln should have permitted such s proceeding. On the part * of Stanton and Halleck nothing would surprise however absurd and arbitrary it but that President Lincoln, to do what is right, should allow the per- petration of such an outrage, astonishes us, we must admit. The rosult of the trial of Mr. Val- landigham will, we predict, amount to about as @obbery of the Santa Fe Mail by Guerillag # Bassas Orrt, Mo,, May 11, 1868. J.C. PEMSERTON, Lieut. Gen. Commanding. Musical, Miss Parker made her fires appearance last night in Vordt’s great opora, ‘I! Trovatore.”” We are ever anx- fous to encourage native talent; but ta this instance we find it in too crude a shape for indulgences. Miss Parker, ‘whose voice is sweet but feeble, has no cultivation, and seems utterly ignorant of the first rudiments of the stage business. Her movements are devoid of grace. In fact, it ig easy to sce she ts totally unaccustomed to acting, which fact, added to ber want of cultivation as regards singing, renders her attempt to appear upon our operatic s0ene entirely to boid. Tt was a relief to listen to the fine voice of Mile. Sulzer, who, a8 usnal, sang and octed admirably. The same is to be said of Signore Mazzoleni and Bellini, who were im- mensely appiunded.
