Skillin Houghton, ‘Association, Phitade'pita, ij FINANCIAL AND ‘COMMERCIAL. Bunpay, April 26, 1563. The foreign trade of the port for the past week again shows a balance against us, which must sooner or later lead cither to increased exports of bullion or to such an advance in gold and ex- thange as may give a fresh impetus to the export of American securities. The aggregate import for the - week of foreign merchandise and produce, éxclusive of Gry goods, was $3,272,589, to which add $1,576,- $67 of dry goods imporied, and the total foots up $4,849,256. Against this we exported $2,748,686 of produce and $620,155 of specie—ia all$3,368,841. The apparent balance of $1,500,000 thus shown +gainst the port is probably nearly a million less than the real balance, in consequence of the difier- ence between the specie valuation of our imports and the currency valuation of our exporta. The fall in gold, which at the first was so eminently de- -airable, has involved results not at all beneficial to our general commerce. It ia now well ascertained that while gold ought not to rise to 170, or to any such point, for the sake of the currency, it is fully #0 desirable, in the interests of our general trade, that it should not fall below 150 so long as the war laste. Money became extremely easy last week, At the close of the week all the leading lenders were anxious to place their funds at five per cent, and the leading brokers were abundantly supplied at four. Over a million a day is paid into the Sub- Treasury on temporary loan at five percent. As, however, the disbursements of government are in excess of its receipts, the absorption of money at the Sub-Treasuries by conversions and deposits produces no effect upon the money market, and the rate of interest tends steadily downward. As soon as the legal limit to depositahgs been reached, the Stock Exchange will be the “only market for money seeking employment on call, and the rate wilt wat prevedty fall to3a4per cent. The Secre- tary of the Treasury has been in town for s couple of days, but has developed nothing of his purposes. He will probably leave town for Wash- dngton to-morrow. It is quite likely that he has de- tormimed apon no particular plan, but is willing to che guided by events and the temper of the finan- sial community. He has positively declined to lace & Joan in # foreign market; the intimations ‘so the contrary published in the London journals aro gratuitous and baseless, and are designed partly to bring discredit on the finances of the ‘Union, and partly to extenuate the anprincipled ‘conduct of British bankers in subscribing to the tebe! loan. The resources of this country are amply sufficient to carry us through the struggle which we sre engaged without a dollar of toreign capital. Lf foreigners want to buy our ‘oade they must send here and purchase in open market. With regard to @ loan here the intima- utons ave contradictory. A fifty million ten years (ona has been confidently predicted, and the rea- sons for offering such » loan at the present time command general approval. Yesterday afternoon, however, it appeared likely that nothing would be done at present except, perhaps, to authorize sub- scriptions to new bonds at the closing of the 5 per gent deposits. The Secretary appears fully to re- alfze the importance of preserving the money mar- ‘fret in an easy condition, and'avoiding unnecessary panies, The gow Troasury notes are aot printed the 77th yoar of hia age. ‘The relatives and friends of the fimily are invited to attend the funcr (gg gi bo tel peeaaggy 168 Wost Six- teonth street, this (Monday) after: raoon, at two o’clook, Greun.—On conten ‘atin ~ ‘2%, Hoca Gm- BON, a hy A Gh dopa uo tavit sideuce, No ise} 140 Haat iat ie sictat, eee between ond nd an Third avenues, this ( tet 4, ie a eat Nowtown, on Friday, ‘Aree Borrovans, daughter of ® greater outlay of capital than parties engaged in gold gambling can command. The apring rise, so confidently anticipated by the veteran operators of the Board, and so well justified by the inorease of railway Sraffic and tho steady swell in the volume of paper money, has at length begun to be felt. On Friday and yesterday the increase of commission orders was very marked, and the movement of prices, though irre- gular and spasmodic, was very decidedly indica- tive of a fresh development of speculation. “As usually happens at the commencement of a specu- lation, the public show little discrimination in their purchases. Many stocks rose extravagantly last week, while others, with better claims to pub- Ho favor, were either stationary or only slightly higher than they had been. Nothing can justify the advance ef 9 per cent (at one time) in Hudson River.or 14 per cent in Toledo. Admitting all that is urged by the friends of these properties, the rise is too sudden to be relied upon. Neither of the two.can compare in point of salid worth with Erie preferred, which can be bought at par. As to the movement in Quicksilver, which sold yester. day at 52; in that wretched fancy, Canton; in Terre Haute, which has actually risen 10 per cent ina week, and in other similar stocks, it can only be characterized as crazy. There are two stocks on the lst which fairly promise to yield seven per cent annually to their holders, and yet which sell at old prices. These are Erie old and Cleveland and Pittaburg. There appears to be every reason to believe that both of these stocks will yield hereafter as large an income to their holders as Michigan Central, Toledo, Galena, Rock Isiand or New York Central. The earnings of the Erie this year will probably amount to $10,000,000; those of the Pittsburg—26 per cent of the combined earnings of the Fort Wayne and the Pittsburg roads—to $1,700,000: in other words, 25 per cent on the gross cost of each road. Con- siderable activity prevails in the Michigan Southern securities. The guaranteed is sure of its ten per cent this year, and the road is earning a dividend on the common stock as well. We learn by a despatch from Milwaukee that the &a Cronse road has been sold for $2,500,000, which places the land grant bondholders in the position they desired to occupy, CITY COMMERCIAL REPORT.
