This has been a very dull da) in all the markets, a6 was natural after the excitement in the gold -market yesterday. Gold fluctuated all day be- tween 152 and 154, closing 164 bid, and looking orather firm. Exchange was very inactive indeed, at 167 a 169. It is said on the street that the de- cline in gold yesterday was largely due to the short sales of a leading banking house, which has always been a heavy holder of gold, but which happens just now to own none of the precious commodity. If this be so, the reaction will pro- bably be sharp. Money is & drug at 596 percent. The rate vwould fall still lower but for the unwillingness of “the government to take all that is offered at 5 per cent on call after ten days. As soon as the limit - Of these deposits on call is reached—which, at the present rate of depositing, will be about the Ist of May—the Secretary will probably begin to issue his new Treasury notes; and we learn that the as- wociated banks of New York, Philadelphia and Boston are prepared to take the entire issue offered by the department—say $150,000,000, for in- stance—on condition that the money shall only be drawn from them as it is wanted by govern- ment, This plan will probably mect tho <vieers of the Secretary, as it will secure ‘him the money which he wants on fair terins, while It will obviate the risk of any disturbance in the money market arising from the withdrawal of bank Aoponits by the public. The new Troasury nates, which are to be @ legal tender at the option of the holder, will, in an easy money market, become q {avorite investinent, and the banks will biye no Aifficulty in disposing of them, while, if money tightens up, they will be nsed a#& turrency, and will relieve the stringency. The stock market was very dull tts morning. The amount of transactions was very jiniied in Mood. The public seemed ty be neither buying nor selling stocks, bags | Witt; the, exeeption of the | fegular bears who ilways want to sell every- thing, sellers Sixty, and a few powerful par sties whit are moving im particular stocks A waa very little doing in the «naritet. ‘At the ‘morning board governments were steady. Bonds were neglected. Hudson River wos rether | active at & Jecline of }4 per cent, and Heim ote Aeeline Of 1%. Cleveland and Pittsburg fel) off 4, Rock Island %, Quicksilver 134. In the other shares there was no change. At the public board, at one P, M., dulness was again the feature. Har- lem recovered 2 per cent, with a moderate amount of dealings; everything-elee was neglected. At the second board there was a sudden recovery in the whole market. Erie rose %, Hudson }, Har- lem 1%, and the Western shares were all }4 a 9% better, the market leaving’ off with a very buoyant tone. At the four P. M. call the market was strong. The underwriters have again raised their rate in consequence of the piracies of the Alabama, The rate for traders between the United States or Europe and Asia, Africa and South America, is now 5 per cent. ‘The Rock Island earnings for March show an in- crease of $48,232; those of the Toledo an increase of $05,486.
