2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuvxspax, April 2-6? 1 Gold has been very active aud mercurial to-day. Tt seems that some very heavy holders who had bought below 150 concluded thatthis would be a good day to realize profits, and at an early hour this morning sold it down to 165%. It afterwards rose to 16734, fell back to 155%, fell back to 164, sold at 164, 153 and 15234 in the afternoon, and closed 153% bid. It is stated on good authority thatthe measures before the Legislature for the repression of speculation in gold will fail, the pressure brought to bear on members by the produce and morcaatile interests being too powerful to be withstood. It has like- wise been urged with effect that these measures would practically drive business from New York to Boston aud Philadelphia, and should not, on this account, be counteranced by the State Legisla- ture. Foreign exchange is inactive, The importers are not buying, and the bankers are not anxious to draw. At the close to-day the quotation was 167 a 168, Money is very easy. The leading brokers are amply supplied at 5 per cent, and at 6 all the lend- ers have money to dispose of. The disbursements of the Sub-Treasury are enormous—even larger than the receipts. ‘The stock market was dull this morning, and the best prices of yesterday were not maintained. Stocks generally showed a tendency to sympathize bee gold. Pacific fell ‘off 34,New York Central 4, Erie %, Erie preferred 34, Rock Island %, To- ledo 4. On the other hand the Harlems were firm, Hudson River roe 1 per cent, and Cleveland and Pittsburg was very steady. Governments were weaker, on the fall in gold. There are large orders for' government securities here on European account, which can only be exe- cuted when exchange reaches # certain point. From this cause we shall probably witness here- after a closer sympathy between gold and govern- ments than between gold and the railway or mis- cellaneows shares. At the close this morning the market was steady. Inthe public board, at one P. M., the market was extremely dull, and transac- tions were very limited. In the afternoon the general market was inactive, and a fraction lower; but Harlem and Hudson were exceptions. The former rose 3 per cent, selling at 59; the latter was ¥% per cont better than in the morning and in brisk demand. There wasno change at the four P. M. call of the public board, except in Harlem, which dropped to 57. The following were the aceean of the cig “aie Fanaa Pacific Mail.
