8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Waupwespay, April 1—¢ P. M. Geld rose to-day to 160, closing 160% bid. ffuctwated-throughout the day between 156% and 160, The-amount of transactions was very large, and the tone of the market very strong. The ad- vanoe, in. view of the disbursements of the Sub- Treasury for interest and of the extreme dulness ef the exchange market, is 80 remarkable that we are compelled to look for its cause beyond Wall street, and beneath the surface of the speculative arena. Its true that yesterday the market de- rived assistance from the failure of one or two small operstors for the decline. But this cause is quite insufficient to account for so large and well maintained an advance as was witnessed to- day. And, however discouraging the reflection may be, a careful study of the facts will lead an unbiaseed mind to the conclusion that this advance is chiefly due to @ revival of the general distrust and alarm which caused gold to sell at.173 only a few weeks since. It is remembered that since gold sold at 173 we have not won a victory or achieved any kind of success. On the contrary, our operations are in statu quo everywhere, and the month of March, which was to be so prolific of triumphs, has closed without adding an inch of . territory to the flag. The news from the South- it does not hold out any immediate prospect of cesses in that quarter; and, on the other hand, the negotiation in Europe ofa Confederate loan ata premium in gold is naturally calculated to disturb the equanimity of the faint hearted. Again, it is +new the interest of every class of merchants, and of every one who has anything to sell, to keep up the price of gold, in order to maintain the price of his particular merchandise. A fall in gold reduces the current value of dry goods, produce, groceries, land, houses and stocks. Since the late decline from 160 to 140 the Jeading trades of New York have been at a stand still. It is but natural that they should rather wish gold to rise than to fall, and even that they should make combinations to buy or carry gold. .Finally, the stream of paper money flows steadily on, and swells at the rate of a million aday. Mr, Chase will, in the course of a fortnight or so, be aeuly to begin to issue his new Treasury notes, which, it is understood, are to be a legal tender at ‘the option of the holder. Several banks are pre- sparing to avail themselves of the new act of the Legislature permitting them to take advantage of Mr. Chase’s act, and to issue paper on the deposit f governments. We hear of one bank, for in- atance, which holds $1,500,000 of United States bonds, and contemplates sending half of them to Washington to be exchanged for currency. It is pretty clear that the «mount of paper money of all kinds which will be afloat before the end of the summer will not fall far short of one thousand millions. Such issues must, of their nature, depreciate, and no human Jaw can prevent it. The result is deeply to be de- plored, andevery secondary influence which can even for a time check the rise of gold should be amcouraged. But of the general tendency—with- eat great victories very soon—there can be no @oubt whatever. ~ Exchange was dull to-day. It sold this mommg at 17134 and 172, which was about 1 a 1% per cent relatively cheaper than gold—the cause of the difference being the unwillingness of importers to buy in consequence of the stagnation in goods. Money is very abundant, and is offered every- where at 6 per cent. Stocks were better this morning, and the tone of the market was buoyant. The advance in gold en- abled some old European orders for government stocks to be filled, and they were firmer. Com- paring the first board quotations with those of last evening, we note an advance of) per cent in Pa- cific, 1 in Central, % in Erie, % in Erie preferred, 2 in Hudson, ?4 in Michigan Central, 1 in Cleveland and Pittsburg, % in Galena, 4 in Toledo, and 4 4 Bucks County Lead. The Harlems were not as strong as last evening, and Rock Island fell off 14 percent. At the close the market was strong. At the one P. M. call in the public board prices, usual, were a fraction lower, aud the business was moderate. In the aftérnoon the market was irre- gular. Central, Southern old, Pittsburg, the Har- Jems and Galena were pretty strong; Erie was ape and Hudson and the Western shares were rather lower. Atthe four P.M. call the market ‘was generally firm. A large business was done in the Harloms, which rose 14% per cent; likewise in Erie, &c. Joneph Cox, the boy who ran away with $10,000 in gold from Messrs. Weston, Dortic & Co., was ‘this day arrested in Albany, N.
