This has been another active and very exciting day in gold. It opened at 145, declined to 140, sold at 139%, at the second board, then rallied on the Vicksburg news, sold at 140, 142, 145, 145’ then fell offagain to 141%, and closed that bid. good deal of gold which has been hoarded since the beginning of the war is coming into the mar- ket. Exchange participated in the flactuations of gold. It sold in the morning at 156, then at 155 and 164, rose with gold to 160, then fell off, and closed about 156 @ 156. The speculators who have hoarded exchange, and the foreign merchants and bankers who were satisfied that our currency was going to collapse, are nonplussed at the new situ- ation of affairs. Money is extremely easy. On call, the leading brokers are freely supplied at 6 per cent, and no loans are made above 6 per cent. The banks are full of money’which they are trying to lend. Some of the dry goods jobbers who have been rpeculat- ing are uneasy, and their paper sells at high rates. Stocks were lower this morning, from aympathy with gold. Erie declined 2 per cent, Pacific Mail 24, New York Central 3%, Erie preferred 2, Hnd- son 24%, Harlem old 1, preferred 4%, Galena 1, Rock Isiand 144, Toledo 1, guaranteed 2, Southern old 2, Michigan Central 2}4, Pittsburg 2; all this at the first board. Governments were 4% a % per cent lower. At the close of the bonrd the marke! was stronger. Without stopping to discuss the propriety of arailroad company getting surreptitious puffs of its stock into the papers, we willsay that the insinuation or suggestion of a dividend on Harlem preferred is gratuitous, base- less, and calculated to deceive. if the Harlem Company have so much money, why don’t they pay their debte—their overdue bonds, for instance, many of which are held by poor people, who need the money? A statement put forth by the com- pany some three months ago, and signed by the Prosident, is now before us. It is ‘‘a plan for the reorganization of the debts of the company,’ by the issue of $6,200,000 of new mortgage sinking fund bonds. In this “plan, which is intended to relieve the concern from the pressure of judgments, the President shows that, if the earnings of the road do not fall off, it will be able to pay the interest on these bonds and to keep up a sinking fund. If business should at any time fall off, or any accident should occur, either the interest or the sinking fund would have to be neglected. There is not the least inti- mation in the “plan” that there will ever be any surplus, after paying interest and keeping up the sinking fund, for the preferred stock. On the con- trary, it is the opinion of the entire board of di- rectors that no dividend on that stock can be earned. Hitherto the Harlem has never been able to earn interest on its debt, and the increase of traffic on the line since the war has becn less than on any other road in the country. The produce trade is paralyzed for the present, in consequence of the fallin gold. To hear some | of these dealers talk, one would suppose that we could not afford to ship food to Europe with bills at 154. These persons should remember that some of our heaviest shipments of produce have been made with exchange at 1104112. If, in 1860, any one had foreseen that produce bills would sell in this market, in March, 1863, at 150, he would have probably predicted that the export of food would be so enormous as to diminish the supply neces- sary for our own consumption. The receipts to-day for five-twenty bonds were $820,000; for five per cent deposits, about $600,000.
