THE METROPOLITAN RAILROAD. The Senate Military Committee have made a report with @ bill to establish the Metropohtan Railroad. They Teport that the road froma Washington to the Chesapeake will place its depot upon the deep waters thoreof, in direct Yoterior water communication via the Chosapeake and | Delaware Canal, the Raritan Canal, New York harbor, the Hudson river, the Housatonio rivor, the Connecticut, Thames and other rivers, which fall into Long Isiand Sound, with all the Atlantic cities and towns situated | upon these rivers in ail the New England States; that by this means the most ample facilities for intercourse, and | at the current rates for freight, will be afforded to the government for military purposes, and to the people tho rapid and cheap means of sending ald to their friends that a portion ot the road te Point of Rocks | will enable the government to control the Val ley of Virginia, cutting off all chances of future raid and invasion of the loya! State, and will save an im. mense Amount in transportation. The Connelavilie road being that link between Cumberland and Pitteburg, when counected by uniting the existing rosd from Point of Rocks to Cumberland ; and the Metropolitan road will form with the Fort Wayne aud Chicago road the main stem of the great Pacific road that it will shorten the distance | between Washington ana Pittsburg more than one hun- dred miles, saving to every person travelling between the West and Washington ten dollars. and saving upon milite- TY stores, the produce of the West, &c., from four to seven dollars per ton, and reducing the time between Washing- ton and Pittsburg from twenty four to eighteen hours. Data and statistics are given abowing that in govern ment transportation alene upwards of four miliious of- dollars per annum will be saved, if the same ratio of tranait is kept up by the war; and that, in case of toreign war, these roads will be inestimable for government aud public uses. The bill provides for no appropriation or ex- penditare of money, only a guarantes of each company’s bonds to a limited amount, which is rocurod by a mort- gage and weil guarded provisions for # «\atiug fund to extinguish the debt.
