FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘mURSDAY, Jan. 8—6 P. M. This has been one of the most exciting days ever known in Wall street. Speculation seems to be thoroughly aroused, and no one an say where % will end. Gold opened this morning at 135%, rose to | s0u0 oa ad 102 1 196%, declined to 13594, sold in the afternoon at 136%, and closed at that bid. Demand notes sold ae high a6 135, and as low as 133%, closing 134 bid. It seems to be universally conceded that the ‘Rew issue of $300,000,000 of legal tender notes, which all authorities now pronounce indispen- @able, will cause gold to advance to 150 a 160, and | 20000 All ‘Whe only question in Wall street is, how long will take to get there? The jobbers would prefer @ gradual advance, with a reaction four or five times a week, by which they could make Profitable ‘‘turns.”” Operators in gold are gene- rally content with fractional profits; they hasten to meet the marketas it advances. Among the mercantile class purchases of gold are being made Jess on speculation than as an insurance against ‘the depreciation of bank balances and bills receiv- able. Merchants buy the gold outright, lodge it in bank, and keep it there without regard to the fluctuations of the market. We notice, by the way, that among other financial delusions enter- tained by Mr. Thaddeus Stevens, Chairman of the Oommittee of Ways and Means, he seems to fancy ‘that if customs duties were not payable in gold it would not stand to a premium. The fact is, of eourse, that the payment of duties in gold har Rothing todo with the advance of the precious metal. Not a dollar bas yet been paid in for du- tes; yet gold is 135 a 126. Gold rises because the government issues paper, and calls it money. And the more of such paper that is issued, the higher gold will rise, not on account of any real demand for the metal, but in falfiiment of au invariable law of political economy, Exchange closed at about 149, a 150%. ‘The money market has become more active in eonsequence of the increase of speculation in stocks, and the leading houses are getting 6 per cent for their money, Morcantile paper sells at 647. Debt certificates advanced azain to 97%: Money is growing more abundant here, in view of renewed, and thousands of shares changed hands.
