A CITIZEN SHOT DOWN AND LEFT IN A STATION HOUBB ALL NIGHT WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OP MEDICAL aT- NER KANNEY—VERDICT AGAINST A POLICEMAN, Corover Ranney was notified to hold an avte-mortem examination yesterday m the case of George Hammond, @ German, residing at 264 West Thirty-fifth street, who is now lying dangerously il) from the effects of injuries received at the hands of policeman Jas. Irving, of the Twentieth precinct, on New Year's morning. Upon in- quiry the Coroner learned that the assault took place ay Turner Hall, a place of great resert for Germans, in Thirty-sixth street, between Eighth and Ninth avenues. A disturbance occurred there, it appears, and the officer wen, into the saloon in citizens’ dress fer the purpose of ascer_ taining the cause of the difficuity, when be was told that the row was all over, and was requested to leave. Irving wasnot disposed to comply with the roquest, however,, when he was summarily ejected from the premises. In weing out of the door the officer @ragged Hammond with him, and a struggle ensued on the sidewalk, in the course of which Irving drew a pistol and shot Hammond through the arm. The latzer was then dragged to the station house, aed loaged in aceh all night, without the Denetit of medical attendance. The testimony taken before the Coroner was somewhat conflicting, but we append an abstract of the proceedings they transpired. It is but proper to state that officer Irving has long tained an excellent reputation both os a policeman and a Private citizen.
