It is proposed to give her a battery of twonty fifteen- inch guns, discharging at a single broadside of bollow shot thirty-three hundred pounds of metal, and with Solid shot forty-five hundred pounds, or two and a quar- ter tons. VELOCITY, ETO. ‘The inventor claims that he can obtain a speed under Steam and canvass of not less than twenty miles an hour, with a draught of water amidships of seventecn feet six inches, and twelve feet six inches at the extremities. ARMOR, The unique angular form of side, impervious to shot or shell, would require thirty-three per cent less weight of iron sheathing plates than apy vessel heretofore constructed with au up- right surface above the water line, and the actiial coat for building the thull, spars and outfit would not very much exceed a commercial vessel of similar di- mensions, The armament will be all under bombproof cover, on the gun deck, of ample space and ventilation for one thou. sand meu, excopt two heavy pivot gus on the spar deck to ba used at long range in chase of an enemy. The hull would be of sufficient strength and power to stoam through a fleld of ice without damage, or enter an enemy’s port in midwinter, pass all the land fortifications unobstructed, place the town under contribution or batter it down at pleasure, and make an eseape without any casualties on shipboard. ROANOKE. —The work on this noble vessel is progressing rapidly, and, although no date can be given, she will be done much sooner than is generally anticipated. Tne Novelty Iron Works are exerting themselves to make her all that can be desired as a vessel for offensive as well as defensive purposes.
