Alderman Oitiwell desired to rise to » question of privi- loge, and to ask to have his name inserted as voting for the confirmation of Elitott ©. Cowden at Street Commis" sioner. He was unwvoidably absemt at the last necting; if he had veon present he believed the result would have been diile ent, The request was entered on the minutes, ‘The Mayor seat in the name of Hawley D. To day's bank statement compares as follows with that’ of last Monday : Week ending — Loans. Specie, Céreul’n, Deposit - $178,786, 5,940 9,840,991 16% This siatement in part re the recent gov" ernment negotiation, and the increased export of specie, though the public were prepared to see a heavier failing off in deposits than six and three quarter millions. The government obligations taken by the banks, and not yet replaced by 7.30 notes, do not seem to figure in the loans, which are down over two millions, As the bank déposits are diverted into 7.30 notes, or transmitted to the interior for the movement of the crops, the dis- count jine is naturally reduced. Money is rather more plentiful to-day, and the standard rate for call loans is six per cent. A fresh supply of certificates of indebtedness came on the market this morning, and the price fell to 2 per cent discount. For first class mercantile paper there is a good demand at 4 a 5 per cent. Gold was rather heavier to day. It sold at 13034 atthe Opening, at 1303 between the boards, at 130% in the afternoon, and closed 130 bid. It is reported that the treasure Jost in the Golden Gate will be recovered. Exchange was quoted in the morning at 144% a 145, without trausactions; in the afternoon the leading drawers drew on London at 144. The stock market opened firmly to-day, was dull ‘between the boards, better at the second board, and at the close. The stocks most in request this morning were Illinois Central, which fell off, how- ever, about 4 per cent from Saturday aiternoon's price; Harlem preferred, which advanced %; both the issues of the Michigan Southern, which rose 34 2%, and Erie, which was 4 better. The coupon sixes of 1881 rose 4 per cent, and governments generally were firm. Bonds were firm but inac tive. Between the boards Erie was + lower, and Bali's Head. Rateh, & Drov. Chatham...
