Whitmore. Philip Cosgrove —— The Comptrolicrship and Cor- poration Counsel. The past week was ne of the most exciting, ia ,® Politi, tal aspect, that we remember ever to have witnea’ed in this city. The democratic, republican, people's, citiza.8” ‘and it parties all held their charter nominating” ‘Conventions, and the result is that a whole army ef can- idates are in the field, asking for tho support of their fellow citizens at the approaching Lecember elections, ‘The “smash up” in the slate arrangements regarding the Hocal offices is go widespread and appalling that the ma magers ; who laid their pluns months ago with the utmost care and circumspection, begin to look aghast at the sud- den gloomy aspect of matters; and tbe people are in such en inextricable maze and muddle tbat they do not really know for whem they intend to vote, or whoarethe Simon Pure candidates, and who are the black sheep and ‘traitors. All the nominees for Aldermen, Councilmen and ‘School officers profess to be “for the Union,’ even the re Ppublicans conceal, whenever they can, the true eharacter f their principles, and attempt tosail under the broad ‘wings of the “Union” shibboleth, leaving out the dan- gerous affix of republican in all cases where it cin be done without injuring their prospects in other respects. ‘Thus, in many instances, the republican nominees claim the endorsoment of the people’s Union. or the Union con” stitutionalists, or the taxpayers, or the citizens, &c. ‘Their posters present a regular study in this respect. So, also, among the democrats, whoare, moreover, drendfully Split up on the question of their local nomiuations; things continue ast present, it is pretty division on the Comptroliership aud Corporati will be quite as alariving. In some of the Aldermanic districts there ure half a dozen different caudidates, and in none less than two. This will have the ‘very natural effect of drawing off a great deal of the full Strength from the reguiar democratic cau tes for Comptroller aud Corporation Counsel, as there will of ne cessity be a vast amount of gelling and buying of votes by the Aldermanic candidates. Thus, in the Eleventh dis- trict (Twenty-second ward) it is already said that ar- angements bave been made to run Hardy, the Tammany candidate, on all the Brennan tickets and Connolly (Dick)» the stump candidate, on all the Peck tickets. Hardy is ‘the Tammany candidate for Alderman, and eck is the Mozart candidate for the sume office. The nomination ef Frennan and Develin mests with @ome small amount of opposition among the friends Seen tar Sh a8: He ke ae of the disappointed aspirants for the same of fice. The two Connollys—the Senator and the Judge—proclaim “war to tbe knife,’ and seem determined to smash up the “‘regular machine,” as they have not been able to control it. “Role or ruin’ appears to be their motto, and they have gone to work at their labor of jove with a zeal and earnestness werthy of & bet er cause. On Friday night a large meeting of the friends of these two chiefs of Tummsny Hali was hei! in Broad- way, on which oceasiou both of the gentiomen made speeches, teeming with bitterness against their former ‘associates, Senator Connolly was vominated by acclama_ tion for Comptroller, and Kichard O'Gorman was also mominated unanimously for Corporation Coursei, Judge ‘Connolly withdrew his claims and pledged himself to. the Gupport of the ticket put forth by the movting. It is said that yesterday al! the arrangements for Funving Connolly and O'Gorman were completed, and this fact seemed to cause no slight ‘uuneasiness ameng the managers of Mozirt aud Tammany. It is doubted, however, that Mr, O'Gorman Will permit Rimself to be thus in a measure forced before the peoples +@u the other hand, tbere are rumors that the repub! -intend to endorse Mr. O'Gorman at their next meeti fhat at least they will refrain from making any momination for Corporation Counsel, with a view to @efeat of Me. Develin. Many prominent republicans, how- ever, @re urging the nomination ef Judge Slossun or » Charles Spencer,on the plea that the eicetion of cither “would be rendered certain by the democratic division. ‘The opinions are so couflicting that it is imposerble to t what course the convention will pursue when get together and talk the matter over.
