So exvensive a gap in time bas taken place between the departure of the Yast steamer for New York and the leay- ing of the Pctomac this morning that I could not send you op earlier an account of the recent fight near Thibo- deaux, up the Mississippi. In consequence of the uncer- qeinty relative to the departure of vessels for New York, = was compelled to have everything written up to time, while off Donaldsonyille, which will account for the wary form of my present correspondence. Yesterday mermng 1 made an attempt to reach Gep. Welizel’s brigade, for which purpose I procurod ® pass from Colonel Shaffer, the chief quartermaster, to pass Over the Opelousas Rajiroad. To my mortification, however,on reaching the depot at Algiers, I found that the quartermaster at that place bad received orders just before to permit no pavsengers on the line without @ pass Rignod by General Butier himself, As the train had Jeft, howover, the order was of no use to me, asl could not adord to wait till another train was sent of—aud they are ‘onty sent by special order at irregular timoes—as I would fm that case lose the chanee of sending news to the latest mowent by the Votomac. 1 bave ascertained, however, that there had not been any more fightufy of moment up the river, and that the bridges destroyed by the rebels bad beon rebuilt. In fact, were this not the case, the Tailread could not be open to our troops. Two’ companies of cavalry crossed to Algiers yes. terday -moruiug, and proceerted up the river. They were accompanied as far as the other side by General Butler and staff Of course matiers of this kind are managed with all the secresy possible, in con- sequence of which it is hgra to get reliable information about them, which is not of much importance till some thing has been accomplished or failed to be carried out. Ou Thursday the weather was bitterly cold, and yester- day was not inuch pleassnter. Even in Algiers it seemed that Boreas had entered into a league with Loins to Plague the residents. These Southern cold snaps are far more sensibly felt than the more steady frosts of the North. They chill through the very marrow. I have bees in New York, with the thermometer five degrees below zero, and feit less unconifortubie Unan yesterday and last week, up the river, with the mercury above the freezing puint. Whiie on this subject 1 may as well say thita sugar Piauter; with whom I had some conversation yesterday, told me that he did not appreheud any injury to the eanes from the recent cold. He tock the precaution to Winrow, and thus save his crop. The transport Saint Maurice, in which T came down from Donxkisonville, had two hundred and seventy hogsheads of sugar on She als» brought down the rebe! prisoners tukeu atthe fight at Thibodeaux. Several of them are said to have been rejeased on taking the oath of allegiance to the United states. ‘The rumors received through fecession sources, to the efct that Great Bruain and Francs are about to inter ‘Vene in our quarrel, rejcice the hearts of secession Dut Usion men regard them as meaning nothing. intervention rumors have become £0 stale that loyal People attach very little importance to them. goed Texan regiment is about being organized in this iy. As the time drew near for the assembling of the Con- vention again crowds of interested parties began to throng the lobbies and barrooms of the hall, and the exterior of the building exhibited all the evitencer of former days, when Tammany ruled supreme, in the metropolis. The sklewalk was completely imenopdlized by chattering groups, and even out to the middie of the road the ground was covered with people waiting to bear the result of the aiternoon’s proceedings. A formidable gathering ¢f sports, including gamblers, betters aud muscular individuals, mingled with the in- door crowds and greatly added to the interest and ex- citement of the occasion. John Morris: pugilist, was on hand, the centre of a circle of admirers, who seemed ‘to attoch oracular import to every word which fell from his lips, and listened with eager interest to his owinions on the important subject of the Comptrollershi of ‘the committee that passed in battonholed by Morr ssey, and a mysterious cot tereupon took place, and from the ance of the separation, it seemed quite cer ettices of the nation had been settled in the most ble manner.
