The former sold at 133, then fell off and closed at 131. Bankers’ bills closed at about 146% a 147. No cause is assigned for the recent advance in both gold and exchange, though the removal of Gene- ral McClellan, which has unsettled men’s minds, may possibly have had something to do with it. The stock market opened very strong this morn- ing, but fell off at the close of the firat board on the news that Mr. Chase was borrowing $12,000,000 from the banks. Between the boards there was almost a panic, and lower prices ruled throughout the list. At the second board the market was still lower, and closed very hea with a downward tendency. Erie opened at 6424, sold down to 635% between the, boards, and closed at 63% bid. The Western shares, which were all better at the opening, were heavy at the close of the first board, and considerably lower afterwards. This was especially the case with the Michigan Southern shares, Toledo, Tinois Central and Galena. The: are supposed to be held on hypothecation in large amounts at the banks and banking houses, and a turn in the money market would bring them out frecly. There was a sale of government sixes this morning at 3 advance. These sixes are gradually finding their way into resting places, and will probably soon be scarce in our market. 20 Chat 2000 Tenneesed'n, "#0 4000 Hod RRR oon bd OT Kg 2000 Chi & NW inthe 90 5000 ChiMNW ass’ b 573 6000 Chic KNW2u.b3 31 4000 Han & StJoRR. 62 x, 9000 Clev &To} st bs 1038 §000Clev &Pitts4thm 7345 25 shs — ofAm 11334 25 Am Ex Bank... 95 65 Del&kHund Canal Co 11414 f Camb'd Coal de 18 a By $1000 tenn 6's, '90 5 aR 6000 Erte R RR 4th mb too ott 4 2008 Hud R RRSd m lors 16; tham Fauk. 86 100 do... 10 Mil & Pdw 850 PFW&Chi RE. 158 t do. 14 ; 21 Little Miami oR. 1" BOARD, 300 62s Reading RR. The extent of their business enables them to buy | a: 200. and cell stocks cheaper than could be | respecti done by houses with fewer customers, and the attempt to compel them to charge higher | holders rates is just as unreasonable as it would be to try to force A. T. Stewart & Co. to keep their prices up to the level of those of a small thread and needle atorein the Bowery. The event occurs at an unfor- tunate time for the regular Stock Exchange. An outside board has lately been successfully estab- lished in William street. This board is frequented not only by the street speculatora and outside brokers, but likewise by at least half the members of the old board. A very large Dusiness has been done there of late, and quite @ number of speculators are getting into the habit of doing their business there in preference to the oid board. It is understood that at this third board business is conducted as in the open street, and brokers may charge whatever they please.
