Of these latter, so far as We can gather, the import from Europe during the past week rather exceeded. the export hence; but no figures oan be ascertained or even conjec. tured, Our trade for ten months, ending 31st of October, 1862, shows an importation of $152,000, 000, agaiust an aggregate export of $175,000,000-. 8 balance in fav, Of the country 1 to ), exclusive move:nent of Ame i- can ‘stocks. Foreign exchange is still main- tained at a point. which stimulates the a ‘exportation of everything that can find a market: abroad. ‘Notwithstanding the recent advanée in almost every description of merchan- dise, experters can still afford to outbid purchas- ers for home consumption. Importations continue | pretty liberal, and, notwithstanding the high price of exchange and the high rate of duties, bid fair to continue so. A few descriptions of dry goods are slow of sale; but, as a general rule, the recent ad- vance in prices has not materially checked con- sumption, and the importers and jobbers are doing much better than they expected. The heavy taxes which home manufacturers will have to pay under the Internal Revenue act will in a measure offset the high duties that must be paid by im- porters of foreign goods. The export of specie, which is usually light at this season—in con- sequence of the shipments of cotton—is so this year, though we are importing about as much cot- ton from Europe as we are sending itere. “his arises, of course, from the increased exports of ‘breadstuffs. During the past week the banks have not made any very material changes in their position, thongh the deposits and loans have somewhat increased. A steady accumulation of money at this financial centre continues to be.anticipated by leading financial authoritiea, though the progress of the war, as it reopens to commerce section after section of the revolted States, will naturally de- velop new fields for the employment of capital. Some capitalists are sanguinely expecting to be able to use their means in the new de- velopment of the State of Morida, under the auspices of the colonization scheme lately brought to public notice. But nothing tangible or prac- tical has yet been broached in regard to the matter. The subject of lending on gold is ceasing to attract attention. Some of the banks lend as freely on gold as they would on any other article of value holding that gold is, in effect, a mere article of merchandise, and has ceased'to constitiite a part of thé mation?) currency. Other institutions decline to lend in cases where they have reason to suspect that the loan fs sought for speculative purposes: - ‘The: at- tempt which waa lately made. to induce uniform action on the subject, through the medium of res solutions of the Clearing House, has failed, as per- haps it was best it should do. Money closed yesterday in abundant supply, at 5 per cent to good borrowers, on first class colla- teral, but quite scarce to weak borrowers, and on the fancy stocks, which have advanced so much of late. Merchants get all the money they want on sixty days paper at 4a 5 per cent, and at 6 a7 for longer dates. Government certificates of in- debtedness are selling at 9914 per cent—higher than they were a week ago. There is no reason to fear an advance in the rate of interest ao long as the war lasts and the government continues to issue paper. But after smart speculative movements and pending elections it must be expected that the money lenders will exhibit more caution in part- ing with their means than at other times. Demand notes, available for Custom House purposes. have fallen to 125% a %. * Gold closed yesterday about % per cent lower than it ruled a week ago, being offered at 130%. The first week's experiment of excluding gold from the board has answered very well indeed. Speculation in gold has been very much reduced, and is now confined, for the most part, to foreign brokers and small dealers, who, wishing to gam- ble, prefer gold, which they understand, to stocks, which are @ mystery to them. It was generally expected that the first effect of throwing gold out ‘of the board would have been an advance in its price. This expeetation has been disappointed, and now bullion dealers profess to expect to see it sell at 125 within afew days. The operation of the Internal Revenue law is calculated to depress the price of specie. It is abundantly evident that under that law the public revenue is going to be ao large aa to render further excessive issues of pa- per unnecessary and the prompt payment of every public obligation a mathematical certainty. The natural effect of this will be to diminish the differ- ence in value now existing between paper and gold—in other words, to arrest the depreciation of the currency. We can now see, too, that the de- mand for gold for export will be very light. Our exports are in excess of our imports by $23,000,000 for the frst fen months of 1862, and, thoug! the ‘bank- ers and speculators in exchange have thus far succeeded in keeping up the price of bills, the market is very heavy and the tendency is down- ward. The leading drawers are abundantly sup” plied with produce bills, and if our imports do not materially increase, and the volume of stooks im- ported does not largely exceed the volume of stocks exported, it is hardly possible that the pre sent rates of exchange—143%4 a % for bankers) bills on London—can be maintained. In this, however, as in every department of finance at the present crisis, much depends upon the progress of military and political events, Military successes will cause gold and exchange to decline; defeats and reverses will cause them to advance. If the administration of Mr. Lincoln appears successful, tig exchanges will move in our favor; if it loses pubifo coisfidence, they will probably turn against us. Alar, sat of both gold and bills is held by capitalists in this ohty Bnd else qa speculation and partly as a eafe inv “to try through the present cri: The following table shows the course of the stock market for the past week and month;— Oct, 4. A day ortwo will show whether the | first premise apon which this bear theory rests be | sound or unsound, {n the meantime the great | speculators in the street—the men who sperate for large amounts and who lead the public after, them—are standing aloof, prepared to act as cir cumstances inay dictate, If political events should foreshadow anything like a peace convention, or an attempt at negotiation, these operators will at once begin to move beldly on the bear side. If there should be none of these indications, but, poand to the enormous on the contrary, a prospect of a steady continuance of the war on the old ple, and with the old financial system, they will, of course, proceed to operate for the rise, ‘The position of affairs in Wall street just now is, however, very peculiar and anomalous. If Gen, McClellan should attack and utterly discomfit or scatter the rebel army in Virginia, the result would be an advance in governments and a heavy decline in gold and fancystooks. If, again, McClel- lan should be himself badly beaten, gold would probably rise, and there would be @ panic in Bor: ernments and fancy stocks. Last evening, and, indeed, throughout the any yesterday, the indications pointed to lower prices, at least for the present. The leading commission houses were sellors of stocks. The buyers were mostly street speculators, of whom there appears to bea clique in each active stock. Erie, which has been for some days the mainstay of the market, is thus maintained at the recent advance of 20 per cent by steady and persistent buying, and the na- tural reaction is prevented. In most of the rail- way shares speéttation seems to work quite inde- pendently of traffic reports and apparent evi- dences of intrinsic merit. Thus the shares of the Mlinois Ceatral—which is doing a very large busi. ness indeed, and taking more money for traffic and land sales than it ever did—are heavy, with a downward tendency; whi'e the stock of the Gale- na—where traffic is fallin: off week by week, in consequence of the failure of the wheat crop in Central Ilinois, and which will probably be unable to pay its usual winter dividend—is ac- tive at an advance, A very large busir.ess is be- ing done in the Michigan Southern stocks, though no one pretends to be able to figure a dividend on either; while Rock Island, which will probably pay regular dividends hereafter, is lower than it was @ week ago. A wild speculation is going on in Cleve. land and Pittsburg, whose managers could not see any merit in it a few weeks since; while New York Central, which is doing a magnificent bu:i- ness, is neglected and dull. This condition of the market has not usually proved a safe one for out- siders to tempt fortune in stocks. Governments have advanced and are firm, witha fair prospect of touching higher prices. It may safe- ly be said that no other investment in this market presents as many advantages as the sixes of 1881 and the 7.30 notes. Whether we carry on the war or bring it to a close this winter, these securities can hardly fail to~appreciate.
