The actual specie strength of the banks themeelves is un- changed. As anticipated, the loans and deposits continue to increase. This must be the case until the Southern country is reopened to commerce after the peace, and once more applies to New York for fands to assist in rebuilding the shattered edifice of its commerce and prosperity. The figure which the deposits have reached is, of course, far beyond any previous return. Money continues to rule about call, with exceptions at 4 and 6. Certificates of public indebtedness are higher; they sold this morning at 99. Demand notes are quoted at 12744 ah. ‘This was the first day of the new experiment in gold. Jt was not caliedat the board, and dealings in it were confined to the outside brokers and the ballion houses. It sold to-day at 150%, 151 and 13144; but holders were not generally disposed to sell much at these rates. ‘The ithpression rather seems to prevail that for atime it may tend up- ward, though the vigorous military movements which are on the poiut of commencing must Deposits. 166,337 456 164,497,072 100/514 Oct. 18..$172612,085 Oct, 25...174,870 346 92,367,261 Increase . 5 per cent on ly cause and 144%, ine. “Ea. allt quoted about 1 axe | ers’ difficulty in covering their exchange. The feature of the market to-day was\the ad- vance in Hudson River, which rose 314 per cent at the morning board, and closed 72% bid, against 70% bid on Saturday. This sudden advance is un- derstood to be predicated on the ramor that nego- tiations are about being revived with a view to the consolidation of the Hudson River Railroad with the New York Central. The recent decision on the bridge question has rendered it certain that the two roads will shortly be connected by @ bridge over the river at Albany, arid it is believed that by the.time that bridge is built it will be for the interest of. the New York Central to own the whole road from the lakes to the seaboard. When- ever this consolidation has been heretofore men- tioned the objection has always been raised that the Hudson River road was earning little more than the interest on its debt, and that the Central had better employ than own it. The recent traffio on the Hudson River sets this difficulty at rest, Dosing the year ending September 30 the road st +$2,626,52T Ded rc a | Deduct interest and sinking fund ‘663,000 2,215,627 Net earnii + $411,186 —which is about 11 per cent on the capital stock of $3,770,000. Nothing has transpired with regard tothe proposed terms of consolidation. On this showing, however, it is improbable that the stock- holders in the Hudson River would take anything tess than par for their property. The gencral mar- ket was irregular this morning. New York Cen- tral was firm, Pacific rose 134, Rock Island %, guaranteed 1, Southern old %, Michigan Centra, XY, Galena 4; the Eries were 4 per cent lower, and Toledo was dull. Illinois Central was steady at. the best price of Saturday. There were sales of Nicaragua Transit at 9. Governments were rather neglected. In bonds there was no change. Between the boards there was very little business done, partly, no doubt, in consequence of the in- clemency of the weather. At the second board the market was dull, but generally steady. New York Central fell off? and Erie 4%; but the West- ern shares and Hudson were firm. Michigan Southern old and guaranteed were % better.
