Their. place, as leaders of the market, has. been taken by Michigan Central, Rock Island and Illinois Cen- tral, all three of which exhibit saarked buoyancy. ‘The earnings of the Michigan Central, which we published on Friday, encourage the belief that the January dividend must be increased. IMinois and Rock Island have dropped belew their rela- tive place in the stock market; speculators pre- dict that it will not be long before they follow Eric preferred and Michigan Central across the 90 point. The Michigan Southern stocks showed some activity at the middle of the week, but fel! off toward the close. They are being hammered. on sellers’ options, by brokers who are suspected of acting for parties in the management. A large business was done in New York Central last week, and the temporary decline in the price was recovered. The weakest stock on the list was Pacific Mail, which declined to 11734, after selling, a few dayssince, at 133. The deciine wa- mainly caused by the reopening of the Nicaragua route, which now bids fair to he an accomplished fact. The steamer America sailed for San Juan yesterday.
