Mercantile paper gells at 4 a 8 pe cent for very choice names. Certificates of in” debtedness are rather lower, the supply having been considerably increased. Demand notes are pretty steady at i27 a 4%. Gold opened this morning at 132%, declined to 132 between the boards, sold ai 131 in the after- moon, and closed that bid. Exchange was quoted at 145 a 146, and wes about 14544 at the close. As was anticipated, speculation in gold is failing off, and, thongh we shall yet witness re- markable fluctuations in the precious metal, it will probably soon cease to be the leading fancy of the street, To-morrow is the last day on which gold can be bought at the board. Some of the brokers expeot to do a large business in it in consequence. Stocks are again buoyant, the Icading shares being Michigan Central, Michigan Southern and the two Eries. The facts lately presented to the public with regard to the earnings of the Michigan Central appear to have directed most of the orders this morning toward that stock. It rose from 88 last evening to 89, 98, 91, 91%, and sold at last at 92, Southern old jumped up to 47—an advance.of VY per cent. Guaranteed did not keep pace with the other Michigan shares. Erie old sold to-day at 65—an advance of 144; it closed that bid. The preferred sold at 93—an advance of %4. Other shares were generally 4 a Y% better, with tess ac- tivity than in the descriptions mentioned. Roek Island, between the boards, rose %4 per cent, sell- ing at 83. The weak spot in the market was Pacific Mail, which fell off 4% per cent, partly, it is presumed, on uneasiness with regard to the pirate Alabama, and partly from apprehensions of the opening of the Nicaragua route. Government sixes were a fraction lower. In State stocks there was very little done and no change of prices. Between the boards the market was active and exciting. As usual of late, William street, from one to half-past two. was thronged with an eager crowd of speculators, al! anxious to buy stocks. At the second board thé market gene- rally was stronger, the exeeption to the general rule being the shares of the Michigan Southern, old and new, which were *4 al per cent lower than in the morning, being freely offered on eell- ers’ options. Michigan Central was in demand at afurther advance of % per cent; Erie rose 34, Rock Island 9%. The last mentioned stock was in very active demand nt the close. The road is said 10 be doing weil, and to have lately received a large increase of business in the shape of traffic with the South. Erie fell to 6434, preferred to 9224, Mlinois Central to 8124, and gold to 130%. On the other hand, Galena rose to 8534, Rock Islomd to 84}4, and Toledo to 71. A letter from Chicago says:—-'The crop in Southern and Central Iinois seems inaxhaustible. The Ilinois Central will show @ gain of about $90,000 for October, besides $200,000 cash from lands. They are building five hundred cars, and will pay for them out of their current earnings: The receipts of cotten and tobacco from the South, together with the monopoly of the pas- senger traffic toand from Cairo, are making the fortunes of this company. People do not like to goon board a steamboat skirting the shore of Kentucky or Mississippi, and take the risk of guerilla shots.” Those considerations ‘seem to have been anticipated in England. Mlinois Cen- tral stock is rising rapidly in the London market, and is now selling there at prices which leave a handsome profit on its export hence. The importations of dry goods were light last week, amounting only to $865,140. For the year to date, however, they show an increase of some $8,000,000 over last year; and, notwithstanding the gloomy apprehensions of many of* cur leading importers, the prospect is fair for a pretty active trade this winter.
