To be sure it was rather difficult to comprehend the atrategy of these complicated move. ments, and tho tactics of these numerous fields; but, nevertheloss, the reporta came from #0 many sources, ‘and agreed #0 well in thoir general features, that we wero inclined to credit them with at least a basis of truth, ‘Yot it turns out that after the battle of Perryville, on the 8th fost, ne general action was fought. Kirby Smith en countered Crittenden’s foress near Frankfort, and de- foatod thom, and thia is the last wehoar of any fighting. For some ¢ are hothing is known of the movomeuts of our arn; We had imagined it advancing om Louisvi ile; or, erhaps, crossing the Kentucky river, and threatening innati; we had cherished the delusion: that it was, at Texst, holding a cms position in the midst of the dertile and teeming regwn of central Keulucky. But, all this time, it was retreating—fal! back i tho polite term—from the neighborhood of Loniaville to the ex- treme southwestern corner of the State; {tom the pro- ductive biue grasa country, to the motintain counties, whoro Jifo ia a burthen to « gré . Our last advices reoder it certain that’ Bragg's army {s abandoning Kentucky, and that it t#.now in position in the neighborhood of Cumberland Gap. We donot kuow, and do not pretend to divino, the causes-of this retrograde movement. We do know that it has profoundly disap. pointed and mortified our people, und dashed tho fond hopes they-had formed of liberating Kentucky and Ten. nessac, We expected, and reasonably expected, teneral Bragg's magoificent army, something (han a mere incursion to the ‘neighborhood of the (hio river—sometbing more than fruitless DA one snd barren battles. We had anticipated from Goueral Bragg something more than boastful orders to his troops and sounding prociamations to the people beyond the Obio. We had formed exalted hopes of thegreat ex pedition which he led acrosa the Tennaaace river, and noarly up to the auburhs of Louisville, His long dela ‘upelo, bis hesitancy at Chattanooga, bis tardy into Kentucky , had shaken public confidence, bubfe willing to condemn 80 long as opportunity yet ram for & consummation of the grand objecta of the campaign. Tt is all over now, The Kentucky movemont fn the hands of General Bragg has turned out to be simply a fizzle. No other word can so appropriately describe it. It has bean, from beginning toend, a bri!tant blunder and a mag nificent failure. Without losing a battle; General Hragg bas suffered all the consequences of deteat; after march. ing hundreds of miles in pursuit offa flying cnemy, after capturing towns and cities, menacing Cincinnati and threataning Louisville, fighting and winning battles, aud ing thousands of prisoners, he turns bis back on bia conquests, and leaves to the beaten and wondering ene- my all the advantages of victory.
