Faway, Oct. 17-6 P. M. The money iiarket is moderately active at about five pur cent for call loans, with exceptions at four and atsix brokers are, however, anxious to en- courage the flow of capital from the outside pablic into the streei, and persons who have idle balances in bank wili fiud no diffeulty in placing them on good security. Paper sells at 445 per cent for first clas: names. There is no change in certifi- cates of public indebtedness. Demand notes sold this moin ng at 12734, between the boards at 12544, and later in the day at 12734. Amore rational state of things is beginning to existin the gold and excha ange markets. Gold sold very freely at 152 this morning, and, though it was done afterwards as high as 1! fell off afterwards to 15094, then rallied, sold up to.132 again, and closed 132 bid. People gene- rally have no loner the coniilence they had in gold as a speculation a few ¢ Many persons continue to believe that it will advance higher. Batit is becoming dangerous to operate in it. Foolish as any combination of bankers or brokers for the purpose of keeping Jown the price of gold would unquestionably be, there is no securi- ty that such a combination wil! not be formed, and that its effect may not cause a decline of ten per cent in gold ina single day. Some bankers are already refusing to lend on gold at any rate. Nor is it certain that we may not hear, any fine morning, of such a victory, or of some overture on the rebels’ part, which would knock gold down to 115 a 120 in an hour. For these reasons the shrewder class of speculators were rather disposed to-day to “bag” their profits in gold, and take “‘a fiyer’’ in stocks, which have not moved much within the past ten days. They seemed to think that for the present gold would cease to be as active us it has been, and that there was a better prospect of lively fluctua- tions in stocks. Exchange fluctuated between 144 ang 146, closing about i45, The stock market was all better this morning. The most active shares of the morning were the Erios, Michigan Southern, old and preferred, and Michigan Central. Erie old rose % per cent this morning, and preferred 124; Michigan Central rose %: the Southern stocks were a shade lower than last evening. New York G@ntral, which is slowly but steadily oppreciating, advanced \% per cent at the§norning board. Rock Island opened lower, but at the close of the first board was firm at a reaction. The reports of the traffic on the trunk Jines and on the Michigan roads continue very encouraging The Erie shows an increase of a quarter of a million in September; Michigan Centra! also shows a large increase for ‘the present month to date, In bonds there was no change. Missouri si were rather lower. Cam- berland declined 44 per cent. In governments there was very little done, Beiween the boards to-day the market was firm; for Erie old 60 was freely bid, and there were sales At the second board everything was lower on the oall, but im- mediately atterward there was a sharp rally, and prices rose to abont the figures of the first board. ‘The following were the quotations at half-past fire t GOW.
