FINANCIAL AN AND C¢ COMMERCIA L. 7 Barpar, Oct. 16—6 P.M. This has been a very exciting day in Wall street. At am carly hour this morning the large lenders proceeded to call in their loans on stocks, and many of them refused to lend even at such rates as BaGporcent. The consequence was that quite a large quantity of stock was slaughtered at the first board, and a decline of-2 a 5 per cent onsued. Simultaneously the speculation in gold burst forth afresh with great vigor. Afier closing yesterday at 126%, it opened this morning at 127, rose to 129, fell back to 126%, rallied to 12734 a4, and finally closed at 127% bid. The petite of gold rising while stocks fell wae thus wt, are As soon as the weak men bed been out at the first board the market began to rally, and between the boards a reaction of 124 a 2 per cent was realized on the more active shares. At tle second board the rally was maintained till towards the close, when some speculators who bought this meruing sold out, and thus the lest appearance of the market was heavy. The heaviest decline of the morning was in Pa- cifie Mail, which, after scliing at 133 three days ago, and at 127 yesterday afternoon, tumbled this Morning to 121; it sold in the afterncon at 125, and closed at 124 bid. The Erics, which are very largely held by speculators, of course felt the con- wulsion of the day ‘severely. Erie old, which touched 60a few days since, scold this morning at 54, rallied to 56 between the boards, told at 555% in the afternoon, and closed 5 id. Erie preferred was done as low as 90, h as 8134, closing 818% bid. in ch toached 85 the other day, sold dowr ‘o 79 this morning, rallied to 805¢, and closed 7, bid. iiciigan Central, which sold at 88 a few days ce, was done at $3}4 this morning, at 8444 in the afternoon, and closed 84 bid. This was the histury o/ all the ac- tive speculative shares. Weak holders were siaughtered at the first board. The market, thug relieved, rallied instantly. A reaction in the mar- ket has been expected for some days: by many leading operators, simply on the ground that the advance has been too rapid. It was precipitated this morning by the action of the money lenders, and the result has been that not a few small specula- tors have lost their previons gains, or seen their margins exhausted. The of stocks—the men who operate on great financial principles, and who talse care that thoir line shall never be so large as to cmbarrass them on occa- sions like the present—do not gxem dismayed by the decline, and are not disposed to part with their stocks. They act on the belief that the causes which produced the advance are stillin full operation; that th: steady rise in gold renders @ corresponding advance.in dividend paying secu. rities mathematically certain, sooner or later, and that, so long as Mr. Chase’s issues of paper cur rency have no other limit thon the capacity of printing presses to print bank notes, the course of prices cannot by any possibility be other- wise than upward. ions, sometimes slight and sometimes sharp, are of the mature of a rising market, and all experi- ence shows that cach backward slip increases the violence of the succeeding forward serge and the number of persons interested in the move- ment. Governments were but slightly affected by “the decline to-day; the 7.30 notes fell off 34 per cent. Bonds were variable. The issues of the Pivtsburg and Fort Weyne, which are very cheap, fn comparison with other corresponding securi. ties, advanced 4% per cext; the Northw issues were -about 1 per cent lower. State st were lower. Missouris fell to 5¢; they sold a few daysagoat 58. Inthe afternoon they were done at 5234. At the second board there were as many new buycrsas sellers, and the advance which took piace between tae boards was maintained till the close, when a furtlier decline in Krie and one or two other stocks ensued. The following were the Asaph sat the close of the m: a 104 us Trn73 10 pel US6's,1lyre. US dem’d n. 12 103% % ~ 54hga 54% Lely a 8145 At the third board the market was heavy. Ti were sales cf Evie at 545,, preferred at 6124, Hi gon at 67, Hail m vas ferr: od atag higan Cen" tral at 8394, old at 41, Mimois Central at 79, Galena at £2%4, aii at 127° ‘L strent, who have themselves wite 3a 4 me past, took a pn of the stoc been compelled to content per cent on ca tage of the ex this morning. of the true plan of they succeed in getting up the rate of intere tand kecping it up for auy length of ime, their scheme will have been successful. But if, instead of tl they not only put the brokers, their customers, to some inconvenience, and possibly loss, but are the means of bringing new lenders into the strect to compete with them, then the scheme which has convulsed Wall street to-day will prove anything but edvantageous. There arc in the New York city banks to-day $10,000,000 of deposits. A large por- tion of this money is lying idle. Its owners will take notice, from the transactions to-day, that they can take it into Wall street and lend it on call, on am- ple security, at4.a5a6per cent. Almost every depositor knows some established honse in Wall strect. Let him take his moncy there, exact pro- per security, and leave it there on call, to carn in- come while he engages ia other business. The idea of @ panic in the money market when the bank deposits amount to $1°6,000,000, and there ts no mercantile paper making, and no government loans coming on the market, ately ridion- lous. Some kers call in their loans on the theory that stocks have risen too fast, and that the old ten per cent margin docs not sufice. Where the lender attends properly to his business, and carries {t on upon sound business principles, a margin of ten per cent is generally ample. A ten per cent decline in 24 hours is almost unprece- dented, But there is no reason why the margin on some very mercurie! stocks, such as Pacific Mail, for instance, should not be advanced to 15 percent. As to the advance tn stocks being ex- cessive, it suffices to romark that stocks have in feality advanced little or nothing for several weeks, and that they are now from 20 to 50 a 100 per cent lower than they were in 1856, ae the fol- lowing table wii show:— 4 Cleveland and Toledo Sonigaa ‘Gantral..cce ss. Michigan —— Reading...... What these bankers call the advance in stocks is merely the natural movement of stocks to keep pace with the advance in gold. Exchange was of course very irregular to-day. We heard of all kinds of rates—119, 141 and 142 the true rate at the close being about lil a 4. Francs sold down 1.0234 a 4.00 Couversions of cutreicy into 5-20 notes are be ginning to revive. To-day the Sub-Treasurer received $156,000 for conversion. A decided vic- tory would soon render conversions general.
