K. ee ee the 20th of Augeat, 1862, the Teath regiment [cnpoerm Zouaves) New York State Volunteers, whilst ely contending with ibe enemy at Bull ron, lost one of ite most beloved and bravest members. Sergeant 8. C. Baw, Jr., was wound- ed in the right hip, the ball passing across hi spine and ‘out of the left hip, paralyzing his Jower limbs. He bore his sufferings without @ murmur, saying he received bie wonnde, not for the negro, ‘but for his country and fag. Of these wounds he died in the Ryland Chapel Hospital, Washington. He was an only aon, and a young gentleman as dearly beloved for the viriue of his private life as he was for his courage in battle. At the uprising of the North Mr. Baker, then but twenty years of age, enlisted ae a private in Company A. He was with regiment, under General McClellan, on the peninsula during the famous seven days of retreat, amd passed unscathed through the batties of Gaines’ Mille, the Chickahorniny and Malvern Hill, contests in which bis division lost over three thousand meu. Being moved to the Potomac, he fought under General Fitz John Porter, and upon the 30th of August received the wounds that sealed his fate in the battle feld near Bali run, wi he Jay three cays and nights on the deld.
