Gor. 6.—The Grand Jury were cailed, but se Court said ‘that in consequence of a Grand Jury being m the General ‘Sessions, and there existing some doubt-of the action of ‘twe grand juries et the same term, they were now diseharged until the first Monday m Novembe! The petty jury were then called, but only thirty-three ‘answered to their names ‘The Court said that the District Attorney had better take ap order for an additional panel of two bundred jurors for Wednesday moruing. Mr. Hall was going to suggest one hnndred. The Oourt—From my experience in the Court of Sessions, | Tthink'you had Detter have awo hundred. Will Wednes- | day suit the counsel! on each side? ‘Mr. Fawin James, associated witb Mr. Dunphy for Mrs. Keal, said they were extremely anxious w have as little delay as possible—he trusted not beyond Weilnesday. The Court took that opportunity to state that he would not excuse any juror on the plea of business; # any ap- plication is made on the ground of iliness, the part would not be exc:.sed untess the doctor's certificate, is companiod by an affidavit. It is the duty of every! juror ard in disposing of the criminal business. ‘The case of Mrs. Real will be called on Wednesday, on whien day the additional panel will be returnable. THE INDIANA BANK FORGERIES, ‘The People ve. Samuel Hallet —The devendant is indict- ef for forgery in the third degree, in seiling alleged ficti tious bonis ‘of the Bank of the State of Indiana for $10,000 each. Mr. John Burrell appeared on the part of the defendant, and moved to quash the indictment. ‘The Pistrict Attorney snggested to the counsel the pro- Priety of demurring, as by that course of proceeding the ‘matter might de further contested if the Court should de- Pa that the mdictment was bad, but if the Court should de agajust the prosecution on a motion to quash, ‘there the matter should end. The Court remarked that in such an event the District Attorney contd send a new bi! of indictment before another Grand Jury The District Attorney would not Nko to be guilty of such indecornm towards his Honor as to send the case before another Grand Jury if the indictment was decided to be bad on its merits; but if it were on a mere technical error im the pleadings, then of course he (Mr. Hall) should feel it his duty to frame anether indictment; but, as he under- stood that this motion was a substantial one, he thought the better course for the counsel on the other side would be to de:ur. Mr. Burrell said the course that he proposed was by the advice of learned counsel with whem he is associated, Mossrs. O'Connor and Brady, who ave how engaged in the Forrest divorce case in the Court of Appeals. He did not, therefore, feel at liberty to make any alteration in the proposed motion. ‘The Court said the counsel could proceed as he deemed advisabie Mr. Burrell then commenced to argue his motion to quash the indictment, contending, on the part of the de- fendant, fiat the mdictment charges forgery in a case which ig not covered by the statute of this State. The District Attorney contended that it was covered by the law of this State, and that such an offence as this, involving an important issue, should not be decided on a State Senator McMnrray. For many weeks the deposits have been increasing at the rate of two to three millions a week, while the increase in the loans was only about half to three-quarters of a million. The four millions in- crease above reported no doubt represents the amount loaned on stocks during the most active speculative week ever known im the histo- ry of Wall street. It illustrates with how small a sum of money this street can be thrown inte convulsions. If the banks were to lend ten millions on stocks, itis presumable that the trans- actions would .be double what they are. and the advance would probably be twice as rapid. It is to be hoped that commerce will soon begin to de- vise employment for some of our unemployed bank deposits. Money is én better supply to-day than it was on Satarday. Any amount can be borrowed at 5 per cent, and some lenders are content with 4. First class mercantile names go readily at 445 per cent. Certificates of indebtedness continue to rule at 99%. There és far too much money in the country for money to advance in value in consequence of an increase of stock speculation in Wall atreet. A very few millions of dollars will carry all the stocks which are bought and sold in the street, and if the banks, from a misconception of the present con- ition of affairs, decline to lend on the more active class of securiti thetr depositors will rebieve them of the task. No bank %& properly managed which is not doing @ good business at the present time. Exchange sold this morning at 155°4, some lead- ing houses holding their bille at 136. Gold sold at 123 im the morning, at 12334 in the afternoon, and closed at that bid. There has heen a lull duing the pdst week in the speculation in gold and de- mand notes, probably owing to acvidental causes, and especially to the diversion of the speculative element into the channel of railway stocks and bonds. Aimy, NYork: Christo. Kong. This has been another day of active speculative excitement in Wall street, and of further opward movement in paices. A few operators and some of the brokers, failing to trace the present state of affairs to its trae causes—namely, the impulse given to trade by the government expenditarcs, the iewue of paper currency, and the large traffic on the leading ines of railway—are lost in amazement at the strengts and endvranca.nf the that ;bey ad to undergo araputation | brig Anguata | BL Chl, ened “ va mi an ‘to = 30 ne 180 Pel, L & Wes RR. 110 100 Tol & Wab pref.. 150 Pitts, Ft W& Chic.
