During the night several horses had been Stolen by the sucltos (‘Jo se fish,’ who play the double role of guerillas and road thieves). Strange to say, not one was bit A second discharge was made with equal result, when the Zouaves and Chasseurs d?Afriquo (of which erwe had about ninety) commenced an attack; but the bush was so thick that it was found diffi cult to get at the guerillas, who commenced to retreat, sustaining their fire all the time, They fell back into the deeper part of Ube ravine, and where the wood and vines wore impenetrable except by the small trails, un- known to the newly arrived French troops, but ‘weil known to the guerillas. ‘The scrimmage was Kept up ce over an hour, and ended without less on the part of convoy. but Cne horse and five or six mules having been wounded. We are unable to learn the loss of the gue rillas. Wesaw only one dead, but suppose others must have fallen in the bush where the Zouaves did uot pene- trate. Throughout the whole of that day the guerillas kept up a fire upon us, but generally from points so far distant that their shots would have ba‘ little effect, suj: poring they had beon weil directed, which they were not At Mata de India we remained two days, in order to get the convoy together, many of the wagons having stuck in the mud and become so deeply embedded that they could only be removed by thirty and sometimes forty muies. From Mata de Indin we moved to Los Organos, #tid next day to this plee, thus having 3: teu days to make a distance of less than six leagues. Every day we had rain, and th Soledad .like ail other points along the road. has suffered from the hinds of the patriotic guerillas. Throughout the Whole of the journey we ound but two or three huts left. The ci ma ‘ked by heaps of ashes and rank weeds. Wepxnspay, Oct. 1—6 P. M. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, this has been an active and exciting day in Wal! street. At the commencement of business this morning there was @ disposition to sell gold and stocks, and a decided reaction in the market was anticipated. No cause was specifically assigned for the change from the buoyancy of last evening, though the peace rumors were considered to have affected the price of gold. In the leading shares a decline of La 1% per cent took place. Central fell to 102%, Erie preferred to 8124, Hudson River te 61%, Tole- do to 655%, and gold to 122, with a corresponding decline inthe other active stocks, The decline, however, had scarcely been reported from the board to the brokers’ offices, where large numbers of speculators now gather every morning, than orders were poured into the board at 0 rapid a rate that the decline in the market was at once checked, and an upward movement was inaugurat- ed. Central rallied from 102%, to 104, and sold up to 1014 between the boards; Erie preferred rose to 83, Hlinois Central to 78, Erie old to 50, Michigan Central to 83%. A reaction of la 2 per cent took place throughout the market, and once more all the brokers were impa- tient to buy everything. Bonds were affected both by the weather and the decline at the morn- ing board; quotations show no change from yester- day, except in one or two instances, in which prices were lower to-day. Governments began to-day, for the first time, to move with the rest of the market. The sixes of 1881 rose % per cent. In-course of time these bonds will, from the ne- cessity of the case, advance as much as any other first class security. The interest on them is pay- abte in gold, and they are not liable to taxation— advantages possessed by no, other security on the market. Between the boards to-day the market was very active indeed, notwithstanding the rain. At the second board everything was very active, and prices were all higher. Demand notes ftiuctuated be- tween 11914 aud 119%, closing 119% bid. The last quotation for gold was 12244; the payment of a million at the Sub-Treasury, in the shape of interest, on the October issue of the 7-30 notes, naturally caused the market to decline. The prevailing opinion in Wali street at present -is that gold can- not but advance in the present condition of affairs. A notice is published from Mr. Third Assistant Postmaster General Zevely directing postmasters not to recognize postage stamps which have in any way been soiled. The public have been put to suificient inconvenience by the present condition of the small currency without any fresh trials of their paticnce. It is chiefly the fault of this very Mr. Zevely ‘that postal currency is so scarce. He —Canadian flour was in light supply, and gales were limit. ed at our quotations, with sales of about 600 bbls. If peo- ple are still compelled to use postage stamps as carreucy, Mr. Zevely is to answer for it. ‘he pub. lic will be perfectly delighted to discard them al- together; for a more detestable and troidblesome currency could not be invented by the ingenuity of man, Bat so long as the new postal currency cannot be supp.ied ia suflicient quantity to meet the public necessities, and people have no choice but to use postage stamps, it ix too outrageous for an officer of goverament to declare that the United States will repudiate these stamps when they he- come soiled by handling.
