A large number of small mer- chants and petty operators were trying to buy gold, and making arrangements to borrow moncy on the Sub-Treasurer’s certificate of deposit. In the street operators at once interpreted the re- gulation.as rendering a further advance in stocks inevitable, and bidding upon the - leading railway shares became very active. When the board met the market was discovered to be rampant beyond the experience of the oldest. operator. The volume of business reported on the printed list is fully double an average, and, under the new rule of the board, only a portion of the business ac” tually done is registercd. Itseemed for some time as though the entire Stock Exchange had gone crazy. Stocks were eagerly taken, apparently at whatever price the seller chose to ask; and no sooner had a broker sold his stock at 1a 2 per cent more than he expected to get for it than he had the satisfaction of seeing the price rise one per cent more. Thus, Erie preferred, which was deemed very firm when held last evening at 78, was eagerly taken this morning at 81, and the common stock at 46%. Speculation seems once more to have laid hold of these securities, and there is more exctise for it than there is in the case of some other stocks. Owing to the trouble on the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Reilroad, the great business be- tween the seaboard and the West, which is much larger than usual this season, is divided among three instead of four trunk lines. Of this business the Erie, which is now reaping the bene- fit of the long dock, gets the lion’s share, and we are not surprised to learn that the through traffic on the line is 80 enormous that the road is com- pelled to decline way traffic in every case in which that can be done, A dividend on the preferred in January next is considered a sure thing, and there are many operators who figure a dividend soine time next year on the common stock a3 well. Com- paring the price of Erie preferred with that.of bonds—not more certain of income than it is—such as the Michigan Southern seconds, it is still fifteen s twenty per cent below the rest of the market. Ilinoia Central started up this morning to 734, an advance of six per ceut in two days, At the first board New York Central rose 14, Hudson River 44, Harlem old 134, Harlem preferred 134, Reading 3, Michi- gan Central 3, Southern old 1, guaranteed 2%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 2, Galena %, Toledo %, Rock !sland 194, Prairie du Chien 2. Among these railway shares there was not a single excep- tion to the buoyancy of the market. Some rose more than others, being the favorites for the day; but al! were in very active demand. Panama, for instamee—that staid old stock, which is only dealt in by wealthy operators, and in which there is little or no speculation—rose five per cent, sclling at 150; and Pacific Mail, which was worth about 115 last evening, rose to 117. The business in bonds alone was one-half the businose of the board. All the Erie issues were wanted at an advance; the fourths rose one per cent, The assented bonds of the Chicago and Northwestern rose 4 per cent and the second mortgage 2. The Pittsburg and Fort Wayne, firsts nearly tonched por; the thirds rose 124 per cent. Among State stocks the firmest were Missouris, which rose 144; Virginias and Tennessces were only steady. Go- vernments were the exception to the mai Both the sixes and the 7.30 notes declined 14 per cent. This decline in the latter is the move re- markable as the interest on the October issue will be paid in gold next week, nnd at the present pre- minm on gold thoy pay a larger dividend than any of the railway shares except Panama. Specula- tion, however, seldom runs in more than one ehan- nel atatime. Just now railway bonds and stocks are the favorites, and people are willing to give amy price for them. Next week, eapeciaily if we have more victories, governments may beconic the rage. Investors may rest assored that there is nothing on the market that is really better as an invest- ment than the 7.30 notes or the six per cent bonds of the United States government, with twenty years to rum, and interest always payable in gold. Between the boards there was a slight pause in the excitement; the labor of delivering the enor- mous amount of stocks bought and sold in the morning engrossed the time of the brokers. At the second hoard, as was to have been oxpected, reaction from the highest prices of the morn- ing ensned. Buyers of yesterday could well af- ford to be selicra to-day. There was a large of- fering of Brie preferred, which caused the price to decline to 79%; the other active epecniative sharee—Michigan Central, Southern old, guaran: teed, Nlinois Central, Hudson, New York Central, Galena and Rock Island—were all from 4 to 44 per cent lower.
