The bank statement made up to-day compares as follows with that of last Monday:— Week endian. cans, | Specs, CAreul'n. Deport Sept. 6. ..$158,785,569 96,123,028 9,643,000 142,603,086 Sept, Fs 157,828,513 37,125,240 9,717,126 144,991,062 Decrease. $607,346 - = a Tucrease. — 986,317 78,161 2,328,026 The increase in the deposits last week wasreally nearer four than two millions. This will not be iully shown till the next weekly statement is made. The loans, it will be seen, do not keep pace with the deposits, This probably arises from the calling in of loans and the sale of goverument sccurities by some frightened banks. If McClellan has won a decisive victory over the rebels, these banks will now make haste to replace the securities they sold, and to offer Wall street the moncy they called in. The specie seems to be increasing at the rate of a million a week. In the present con- dition of affairs this is me-cly a dead weight for the banks to carry. If we continue to have good news they might break down the gold market. Money is offered by the principal lenders at 444 per cent on call, and can be readily borrowed at 4 percent. Certificates of public indebtedness ad- vanced with other public securities, and sold this morning at 984—%4 higher thanon Saturday. De- mand notes were steady to-day at 11034 a 110%, say 7% per cent below gold. The receipts for customs duties at the Custom House consist solely of these demand notes, and the supply is steadily diminishing. Exchange and gold are lower again. We quote bankers’ bills at 12914 a %; some leading houses refuse to draw under 130. Gold opened this morning at 118, fell to 117% at the first board.and 11714 at the second, and closed 1174{ bid. The bulls in gold talk of 125 for October; the bears, who believe in the prompt = »pressién of the rebellion, expect it to sell at)”: in the course of a month. There ave timid pc Je enough in the country to keep gold at # sui)+.ontial premium so long #8 the war lasts, notwit..standing the fact that we are large producers of the article, and that there is no earthly use for it now that it has passed out of the currency. The news from: General McClellan, which was made known at an early hour to-day, exercised a stimulating effect upon the stock market, and prices of al! descriptions were higher. For some days past there has been a sensible diminution both of outside business and of speculative movements among the great operators of the street. People have been uneasy about the future, and alarmed about the rebel invasion of Maryland. Many operators are frightened by the eff which that invasion may have in England, where there is a strong party anxiously looking out for some pre- text to justify a recognition of the rebel contede- racy. Others, again, are growing disheartened at the unexpected delays which we are encountering in the work of suppressing the rebellion. Wor these and other coguate reasons, there has been less bull inter during the past weok than for some time previous: and the bear interest, which had tecome insignificant, has again assumed respectable proportions. The news to-day, though it put up the prices of all kinds of stocks, did not bring back the public into the market as buyers. Ail or nearly all the stocks which were bought to-day at the advance were purchased by the street speculators with a view to are-sale at a small advance to-morrow. If we have a succession of victories, and matters shape themselves so that people at large can once more see, or believe they can see, their way clear to the final suppression of the lion and the restoration of the old Union, we shall soon have the public in Wall street again, and the brokers will reap a new har- vest. But confidence has reccived such a blow since NeClelan left the James river that it will take more than one battle and one victory to restore it. Meanwhile, the ease abd 8 paper currency prevent prices dec , even when there is no outside support, and when the news is not favorable. At the morning board to-day government sixes advanced per c and 7.30 Treasury notes 9. All cl were in request. Erie thfrds rose 9; ; Pittsburg and Fort Wayn¢ be rds Chicago and Northwest ern seconds, %, kc. Towards two o'clock, however, @ reaction of % a 4% per cent took place in the leading shargs, and &e seemed to outnumber the buyers. At the second board the second despatch from General McCiel- lan was received, and everything took a further upward start.
