NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER ll, 1862. Arrival of the Columbia from Hevane— The War with the French Still Waged Beldly by the Mexicans, dso., dic. ‘The steamship Columbia, Captain Barton, which left ‘Bavane on the 6th instant, at six o*slock tn the evening, arrived at this port yesterday evening. OUR BAVANA @ORRESPONDENOB. Havana, Sept. 6, 1802. Progress of the War in Mexico—Arrivai of Large Rein- forcements and Supplies for the French Army— Déspaiches from Napoleon—General Dodlado Leaves the Juares Oabine—Guerilla Rasds om the Imperial Wagon Mules— Mortality in Lovences’s Army—Juares Offended with the Prussian Miniser—A General War Fund—@enerab Comonfort’s Command—The French Fleet Off Vera Cruz, de., de. ‘The last intelligence from Mexico, received at Santiago de Cuba by the French steamer Tampieo, and the latest journals and correspondence arrived here yesterday by the British packet Thames, with dates to the 1st of Sep- vember, report some important occurrences, destined to give some impulse to the course of political and military affairs of the republic, which has been flowing rather slowly since the great battle of Puebla, owing to the un- masterly imactivity of the Mexican armies, unaccountable to all who are not acquainted with the reai situation of tbings and the true obaracter of men in that unfortunate country. Among the occurrences I shajl mention in the first nisce tbe arrival at Vera Cruz of the French war steamers Im perial and Eylau, and the steam transport Finisterre, con veying considerabie reinforcemente for Lorencez’s army, and the subsequent arrival of the transport Moselle, from Toulon and Martinque, with provisions and troops. These reinforcements amount to more than 2,000 men, mostly Youaves and soldiers of cavalry. And you may imagive bow merrily they ought to have been “welcomed by the garrisons of Cordova and Orizaba; but a crue) disappoint- ment was behind to spoil their’ congratulations, as the Spauigh steamer Mejico, freighted at Havana with abund- ant provisions and cattle for the Frepch, arrived the 25th at Vers Cruz, with the lose of one hundred and twen- ty oxen, suffocated to death by hot weather and want of ventilation, and thrown overboard during the voyage. Lorencez and Almonte had also recetved important despatches from the Emperor, brought by Viscount La pierre, aid-de-eamp to the last meutioned general, who had been comm:ssioned, with Father Miranda, to a confe. renee with Napoleon Next in importance is the removal of Gereral Doblado, the soul of Juarez’s Cabinet, who tendered his resignation to the President on the 14th Angust, and started immedi- ately for Queretaro. But I must warn the readers nf Miianp agalvet the foaish and calumnious rumors eircu- lated by the organs of Almonte to the purport that his re movai is the covsequence of serioxs disagreement b tween Juarez and his ex-Minister. The Vera Cruzano af~ firms daily that Dobladg was at the head of agreat con- noocied for the overthrow of Juarez; but I on my table @ copy of two decrees from the President quite sufficient to prove the falachood of that paper’s assertion. In the first of these documents Juarez admite the resignation of Doblado, expressing bis regret to dispense with the important services of bis Minister. In the other be assigns to him the post of Commander-in- Chief of the forces destined to operate against the r tionary General Mejia, leader of the robbers now ravaging at Sierra Gordo and iu the State o! Queretaro. At Orizaba and Cordova Almonte and his allies are bney fort:fying their positions , though Lorencez is making preparations to depart as soon as the expected arrival of Geu. Forey relicves him from the chief command as yet exercised by him, with so scanty a share of glory against the uncivilized barbarians whe refuse his kind offers of “peace and order? under a solid government. Heretofore, since the breaking ent of the present rebellion against the constituted aus ‘thorities of the goverument. the war bas, with few ex- ceptions, been carried op in the territory of the Febellious States, fn many of which desolation and Tuin have followed im the track of the contending armies. The @oil of Maryland bas been invaded, and the fortile plains @f Frederick county are now covered by a hoatile force, eating the substance of her loyal population. How soon they may carry their rebellious hordes into Pennsylvania @annot now be predicted; but we assure you that the danger is imminent, and ‘that it behooves us to rouse ourselves, and that without a momeat’s delay, to mect the threatening danger. Although this county has sent forth many of her sous, who have nobly fought and bled fm support of the constitution and laws of our sacred Union, and although the constituted authorities of the county have promptly responded to tbe request of our @itizens, in affording pecuniary aid in the f rmation of @ompanies aud regimente, much more is required to be done to secure ourselves ogainst the inroads of the euemy. We strongly appeal to you, therefore, to organize eommitices of eafety in every township and borough the county; to make out lists of every abie Dodied citizen capable of bearing arms; to o7ganize them under the provisions of tho act ‘of 1858, and y- All the reinforcements ately arrived will be hardly sufficient to clear the roads of robbers and guerillas, a every convoy for Orizaba must be escorted with one thousand five bundred or two thousand men, and even #0 there is no safety. The guerillas are impudent enough to advance within musket shot the wails, ana a few days ago they captured one hundred and four mules, which they consented to return back for the sum of one hundred and four Mexican doubioons. Accordingly $1,664 were sent over, and the mules re- turned to Vera Cruz: but a week afterwards the same mules were captured again. ‘The health was bad at Vera Cruz. THE GREAT STALLION TKOT FOR $10,000—TEN THOU- SAND SPECTATORS ON THE FASHION COURSE— ROBERT FILLINGHAM THE WINNER, ETC. ‘The New York sporting community was yestertay wound up to a more than ordinary pitch of excitement, in consequence of the announcement that the great stallion trot—botween the Morgan stallion, Ethan Ajlen, and the Hambletonian staliion Robert Fillingham—was to be decided that day on the Fashion Cours2, Long Island. Such a concourse of vebicles as filled up the road on the way to the Fashion track we have seldom geen. All kinds of buggies, carriages, chalses, cabriclets and dickeys were brought ino requisition, and every variety of horsefiesh, trom the lank apd hungry counterparts of _ Doctor Syntax’s famous nag to the fall blooded and well tramed ‘curser, was employed to draw these conveyauecs. ‘The sporting element was out in force, for the day was bright and joyous, and the expectation of an extracrdi nary race kept the spirits of all the lovers of the turf at somethng like fever heat. Ferry boats were running near. ly all day from the foot of James slip and Thirty-fourth street for the conveyance of carriages and passengers to Hunter's Point, where the Long Isiend Rai to connect until baif-past two o'ciock. ‘The most of the sporting class, however, favored the road, to sliow of the mettle of their steeds and their dexterity in holding the reins; and on the way up many a lively volunteer race was got up, tending greatly to increase the jollity and animation of the scene. Some of the equipages were very fine, others were passable enough, but the great proportion decidedly rusty. There were not a few single seated light wagons—a very wnaccommodating kind of vehicle—with wheels nearly twice ag nigh as the chaise self, very much like the ditigencias in vogue in Havana. The soenes on the road were very exhilarating and amusing. The immenge coliection of carnages dashed along in one continuous line, amid & tremendons cloud of dust and the shouts of the drivers, Once in a@ way there would be a break down, some rotten harness giving way, to the dis gustand detention of the Jebu, wao thus offered afar Object of mirth for more fortunate genticmen. A largo number of ladies were present, and, to all appearancce seemed greatly to enjoy the merry sports of tho occa sion. There was just breeze enough to temper the warm rays of the sun, and, though the continuous column of dust, which was stirred up by the cavalcade, and which was driven into the eyes by the wind, was not the most pleasant part of the proceedings, the ladies did not seem to care much about it, but enjoyed themsolyes to the fullest extent, THE TROT was for ten thousand dollars—five thousand a side—best three in five, in harness, and was witnessed by a crowd estimated at ten thousand persous—the largest number, probably, that ever attended an aijair of the kind in any conbtry. ingham was the favorite previous w the #tart at one hundred to forty. He has had the call in the betting ever since the match was made between these wonderfal stallions. The friends of Etban Allen backed him up stoutly until yesterday, when they seemed to /want more odds than be‘cre, and they appeared shy when offers of two to one were made to them. As little bas been known of the horse Robert Filling- bam , wo give a short sketch of him. SKETCH OF FILLINGHAM. Robt.Fillingham is a very handsome dark mahogany brown stallion, was sired by Wm. M. Rysdyk’s Hamble- tonian out of a well bred Mambrino mare, known by the name of Dolly Spanker, owned by Henry D. Felter, of this city. She was a very handsome, spirited mare, and could trot in Jess than two mimutes and forty secduds. Her colt, Robert Fillingham, was raised at Greenwood Lake, Orange county, by Theron Kelter, Beq., and was foaled May 3, 1855. The dam was ruptured in foaitng, and was never able to give any sustenance to the colt: it was raised by ne, but was always kind and docile from its Sirs; ts never grained uutil after it was broken, After italaing three yours of age it could trot well when firet put ia harness, and could trot in conaidera- bly better “than three minutes when four yeas oid, When five years old past, it was sold by Mr. Theron Felier to Messrs. ed & Simmons, and afterwards was bought by Mr. Z. F. Simmons himeslf, tho present owner. Fil linghain bas trotted only one race prev jou to the pre sent, and that was with Peter Voorhees’ siailion, You ‘Abdallab, which he beat very easily. His sire, Ham tonian, was sired by Abdallah; he by eld Mambrino, aud he by imported Messenger. Hambistonian’s dam was the Chas, Kent mare by imported Bailfounder; grandam, old Ove Eyo, by Hambletomian, and he by imported Mes- senger; bis dam, also, was by importod Messenger, and the dain of old One Eye was by imported Messenger. First Heat.—ktnan Allen won tbe pole and went off with the fead about half a longth. Bofore getting around the first turn Fitlingham broke up and lost a dozen lengths to bis utmost pitch. He than csooed rapidly on Bihan, and as the latter passed the half miie poie Fillingham war about three lengths only iu the rear. Ethan broke at this point; but the break amounted to nothing. He was down end steady as could be in the twinkiing of au eye; still Fillingham was closing the daylight, and as tbey went around the turn to the three-quarter pole Filling barn was at his side. They swung on the homestretch to. gether; but Fillingham again carried Ethan to a break, weut in front @ length, and came up tl mestretch well in band, at a@ much reduced rate of speed, winning ihe beat by ‘a couple of lengths m 2:24%. ‘Second Heat —Ube horses had a very fine send off; but Fillingham broke up soon afterward, and Ethan Alion took the pole, leading the other around the upper turn four or five lengths. As soon as Fillingham recovered, he becan to close, and made up a couple of lengths before he reach- ‘ed the backstretch, where he put on the steam and soon overtook Ethan, going past the half mile pole sido and side, ‘and immediately afterward his head began to show i front. He opened a gap of fonr or five long ths to the three- quarter pole, notwithstanding that Ethan took a good run nearly ali the way around the torn. Fillingham came up the homestretch appareutiy very easily, leading Uthan about half a dozen lengths. The time of the heat was 225%. Tiird H at.—One hundred to ten on Fillingham. They had a good start, Ethan leading and soon taking the poi from Fillingham, and wing in front, paxeed quarter pole four 8 im. The then began te the backstretch half mile polo, he showed in front, and, the gap, was half ad tat the three. quarter pole, He came aiong leisurely (rom there to the gtand, winning by four lengths in 2 3) Fillingbam was driveu by Horace F.
