One of these brave young men has been quite ill Games from fatigue. Interesting from Buraside'’s Corpse. ‘Wasuineron, Sept. 2, 1863. ) thie morning hed a very interesting conversation with Bievtenant Bertelicite, the A:jjutant General of Brigadier ‘General Nagiee, Reno’s division. He received, while engaged in thie second battle of Bull ‘wm, © very severe wound in the right thigh, and arrived $m this city last might. Although be was very weak, I ob; Qained ihe following facts relative 10 the late movement” ef the FIRST AND GBOOHD DIVINONS, MINTY ARMY ORFS. ne of ihe divisions is composed entirely of regiments Dedoaging to General Burnside, while the other was com- manded by the late Brigadier General Stevens, and bad ‘been lately engaged in the North Carolina war. TEEY MARGE TO CENTREVILLE AND BULL RUN. ‘They were all epeamped last Thursday night at Ma. ames, and on Friday morning started on a march 9 @astrey ille, expecting to have the pleasure of meeting the ‘pabe) Genera) Jackson. They found that he was not there, amé they again marched on until they came to the old ‘Durtie ground of Bull run. DETERMINATION OF THE TROOPS. Many at once reocynized the place, and the resotution ‘wae at once taken that there sbould be no repetition eof (@et dingraceful affair, and there was not. Every man merved himself to meet what was coming with a bold fount, and,as cach one wae burning to make bimself @ Deere, bard fighting was looked for, and Lieutenant Ber- telletie in‘orms me that he pever witnessed such despe- pete and caring fighting as was done on the cecasiva of ew advance. TKEY ENTER THB WOODS I BATTLE ORDER. ‘The divisions were ordered to form line of battle, and> ‘Bis accomplished, the order was passed along the line tw advance into the woods before them. They had hardly get two hundred yards before 44 MOST GALLING FIRE WAS OPENED UPON THEM, ‘amd they discovered that they had engaved a force of seme ‘st thousand rebels, while they had enly about two thou” mad, The superiority of number gave the rebels a great advantage over us, and, notwithstanding every precan- fon was tuken by the commanding officers, the Forty” @gbth Pennsylvania regiment was flanked on the right’ mad the men were EXPOSED TO 4 TERRIALE CROSS FIRB. ‘They fought aguinst these fearful odds im the most de. termined manner, sever flinching until the or was given wo ‘fall back slowly,” by General Nagle. It was @eezed, and the men retired from the fight for the time ‘estag. ‘TUB UNION Loss. ‘The Joss on our side in this fight was a little over five Sundred; 20 you muy jude the way in which the men Sowght. The loss ou the other side he is unacquatated ‘with, Dut thinks that from the desperation of the en- (gegement i: camnoi be much less than our own. Lieut. Bertellette gave me the following names ef officers of the Porty-cighth Peonsylvania who were either KILLED OR WOUNDED I TS SIGHT. Qeptain H. A. M. Filbert, of Company K, was wounded end taken prieoner. Lieutenant Henry Jacksen, of Company G, wounded and taken prisoner. ‘Lseatenant Henry P. Owens, of Company D, wounded im tthe side. Sergeant Otto, Company A, wounded in bead. Sergeant Filbert, Company KE, killed. Corpo: al Evans, Company G, wounded in leg. Sergeant Jobnses, Company B, wounded in nead. BRAVERY OF TEE MEN. ‘Pee Licutonant «peaks in the highest terms of the way ‘™ which both officers and men conducted themacives 2 deplores tbe fact of our noble fellows having to fight @ wist such large odds. I also heard several efficers ~taxing of she gallantry of the men composing thie te igade, and more especia lly of TRE BECOND MARYLAND REGIMENT. ‘This regiment, unlike the others, have never been en- gages im a perious battle, and some doubt was minifesied es te whether they would fight well. I am happy to say ‘What their conduct was splendid, and that the commander, Lieutenant Colone! Duryee (eon of Brigadier Genera! Dur” yee), has every reaacn to feel proud of his officers and ‘a. Their chaplain, Rev Mr. Hitchcock, was in the east of the fight, urging the men on and rendering all he assistance i: his power t the wounded. The sickand ‘wounded have every reason to feel grateful to Dre. Dimon and Beatty, and all the surgeons of the brigade, who were watiring in their efforts to relieve their wants. In fact» @ii did their uttermost, and the battle has proven the pluck and endurance of our troops. ‘Lieutenant Bertcliette will leave for his home in Read- tag, Peansytvanie, ax avon as he is able to be removed. Haxrza’s Feary, Sept. 1, 1862: A correspondent of your paper, writing from this place uncer date of Apgust 27, m giving an acoount of the cap ture of nearly a whole company of the Maryland Home Guard Cavalry at Waterford, Loudon county, Va., must ave received his information frem some “skedadd:inn” refugee, who was more frightened than burt. No company ef Maryland eavairy was captured, or even attacked, at ‘Waterford. Nome bas ever bean stutioved there since this rebellion began. The facts are as follows:—Capt. Mcans baa the nucleus of a cavairy company, composed exclu- sively of citizens of Loudos county, now recruiting at ‘Waterferd, for the purpose of protecting the persons and Property of the loyal Union citizens of that region, On ‘Wednesday morning last, at half-past four o'clock, a band ef rebel cavalry, beaded by Capt. White, avoiding the pub- Mo roads and Union pickets, dashed into Waterford through an immense cornfield, and eommenced an attack upon Bineteen of Captain Means’ men, who were quartered and asleep inacharch, On the approach of the rebels, the guardet thechurch gave the alarm, when our heroic ‘ttle band rushed to the area in front, and poureda deadly fire into the ranks of their assailants. The fre was quickly returned, killing ene and wounding seven of eur men, who then wittrdrew into the church, firing from the windows. and maintaining their position without farther: for more than three hours, until their ammunitite was entirely exhausted. A flag of truce was Dorne by a lady tothe party in the church, demanding an uneonditional surrender. A surrender was promptly refosed, unless the men were rt en parole. This wa® aseonted to by the rebels, and all were released except 4 man by the name of Corbin, who was accused of havin® gee! killed a rebel named Joba Reon of Hilisboro’- ‘the rebels were killed and wounded: Om hearing of the affair Colonel D. Pa Miles, com- manding at this post reach post despatched compa- battalion Mi ny A,Firet laryland cavalry, and Company D, ‘under command of the writer, to the assistance of Captain Means. We reached Waterford at twelve o'clock, moon; Dat the rebels had fled some three hours in sdvance of us, tm the direction of Leesburg, where a strong rebel force ‘was supposed to be concentrated. ‘They carried all their dead and wounded with them, ex- cept a private named Peter Cabridge, who was in a dying condition from his wounds, and could not be removs { write this not with a view of figuring im print—for 1 ‘am ‘used to that—but only to correct the erroneous statement (unintentional, I am sure) of your correspondent in regard ‘to the part which the Maryland caval ect in the af- fatr, Yeurs,&c., _F. The rear guard consisted, it ie said, of Hooker’s and Fits John Porter's commands, who did effectual service ‘fe keeping the rebels in check as our troops: .were moving into the fortifi. cations protecting this city om the Virginia side, an to the report of the Chain Bridge being destroyed, it $s wufficient to say that several days ago the plank® were removed by our authorities as a protective measnre. There are & very few straglers wm the city, and the city today is comparatively free from excitement. The reports of rebel® baving crossed into Maryland find believers; bat nothing to-day was reliably known as to Prvventinga. 1s does not seem proba® Die, as the troops lining the upper reteman shores are sufficient to check the progress of any ferces making such an attempt. The weak points of defence bave been or are being considerably strengthened: It is reported today that firing has been beard in the vicinity of Leesburg, We thvetens means of ascertain- ing the truth of the rumor. Secretary Stanton was at the Depar'ment to-day, at- tending to buainess. This fact is mentioned asa refuta- tion of the report that he yesterday retire from the con. duet of the War Department. Information bas reached here that the rebels are making a dem ustration up the river, and that some of them have already reached Leesburg, and are also spread between there and tho Chain Bridge, as if designing to cross the ferry covnecting with Montgomery county semewhere in the neighborhood of Poslesville. The fords are doubtless properly guarded—additional cavalry and artillery have left here this morning fer that Purpose. Reports reach us that Winchester has been evacuated, the rebels having appeared in force in the valley. ‘The secession programm heretofore published seems to be in the line of consummating as far as the enemy can acoomplish it; namely, by inaugurating scenes of war in Maryland. Our troops though much damaged by recent service: are being recruited and impreved Pmiapanrms, Gept. 8, 1862. A special despatch from Washington to the Press gives an interesting statement of Ad). Be says neither Jack. son or EWell were in any of the recent battles. The forces wore commanded by Lee, Longstreet and Jobneon, not it wae understood that Jackson and Ewell were im the Shenandoah Vailey at the head of a considerable force. Only about balf the rebel army was engaged im the recent battles, but rein- forcemenia were close at band, It was understood among the rebels that Gevere! Lee had sveceed ed in bis design to turn our right. Adjutant Quidne was captured, with nineteen of bis men. He, with an offi. cer, the only ones who wore shoes, the privates having their feet bandaged in rags which were bieod ciotted from the effects of cuts and bruises, walking on the stones, He says but few regiments were better off The rubel army had no subsistence stores.
