The following is a comparative statement of the exports, exclusive of specie, from New York to foreign ports, for the week ending August 5, and since January 1:— 1860, 1861. 1862. Two years ago no one would have believed that the port of New York could have sent out $8,000,000 of produce in two weeks without shipping cotton or Southern produce. ‘The leading articles exported last week were as fol- Jows:— ‘Tobacco to Bremen .$53,000 ‘Whaivbone to do, Lard to Liverpool 22386 Bacon to Liverpool yong Butter wo Liverpool.115,000 Cheese to Liverpool. 62,000 Cotton to Liver; col. 29,000 fat 600 Flour to Liverpoo! Had the Mississippi been reopened, as was oxpected, we might have hoped to have been shipping cotton by this time. As it is, we are ‘inporting American cotton steadily from Li- verpool, anil shipping nothing but those qualities of sca island which are almost exclusively used in Europe. An inereave in that army to a million men will require twice a8 mach money. If the troops cont $1,000 a year per head, which, was the old wate, the aminal expense of maintaining the army now cafled for would be something Hike $1,600 ,000.000.-which would be exelusive of what- ev r money wight be required for the Navy De- te 450,000 wen, partment, for ‘the construction of new vesvele-of- Soy See Or even on eS nd for the civil expenses of government. It is probable, however, that large bodies of men can be fed, and taken care of generally at a less eost per than smaller detachments; our new levies may, perhaps, be kept in the field at a cost not Presnbah > Bg head per annum. Bet Wf our army during Pas ensuing year conte us $00,600,000, the difference between this sum and $1,000,000,000 is pretty sure to be ex- hwusted by the Navy Department, the Treasury Department and the general expenses of govern- ment. This expenditure is much heavier than was provided for by Congress, and to defray it fresh legislation will be necessary in December next. Mr. Chase will probably have to apply to Congress, when next it meets, for permission to issue another $150,000,000 of legal tender paper, and likewise to negotiate @ new loan. A steady succession of brilliant enccesses, and indications of the speedy collapse of the rebellion, might lead to so active further issues of paper unnecessary. hardly safe to rely on such aresource as this. The government has not yet reached the limit of safe paper issues; there is no sign of the currency be- ing redundant; it still falls short of the specie and paper currency which was in circulation when the war broke out. There will be no danger of ex- cessive issues until Mr. Chase has set over $450,- 000,000 of paper afloat. The war, to be success- fal, must be vigorously prosecuted and speedily brought toa close. It is better in every way for the country to spend ¢1,000,000,000 in conquering & peace at the end of a year than $500,000,000.in each of two years. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasury to-day was as follows:— Receipts. ..... —For costoms Vayments. The receipts of beet « ‘cattle ie at Allerton’s Washington drove yards have shown a considerable increase over those of last week, yet they were not suiileicutly heavy to exercise any very deleterious influence on the market. ‘The offerings were nearly all good heavy corn-fed cattle, el such as the well todo butchers delight to select mm, and had the weather been less oppressive during bothof the sales days—Monday and Tuesday—prices would undoubtedly have been fully sustained, if they did not shown a slight improvement. As it was, Some of the dealers report a depreciation of 1c. a 1c. on all grades, while others were lucky enough to realize prices fuliy ‘equal to our quotations of last week. There were compara- tively few sales at over 8c., however, and very few at as high as 83c., which may be considered an extreme rate. There was very little buoyancy to the market, especially during the hottest portion of the day, when tho dealers proferred to seck tho friendly shelter of the few diminutive trees which adorn the great Bull’s Head, or the still more friendly shelter of the ‘“invigo- rating saloons,” where they can obtain a refreshing “draught” now and then. Taken altogether, and con- sidering the exceeding sultriness of the weather, tho re- sult of this weck’s market was fully as favorable as could have been expected, notwithstanding the fact that many called it the hardest day of the season. It was thought that 400 2 500 head would be left over unold. The range of prices was from 6c. to 83sc., both extreme rates, but the larger proportion sold at about 7c. MILCH COWS. ‘The receipts, though not very heavy, bave been ample, and mit acorttiad limited demand, prices are barely sustained, and may be considered nominal at our quota. tions. The bulk of the cows sell at from $30 to $40, and only poor sell lower than the former, and only extras at more than the latter rate, VEALS, The market remains substantially the same. The de- mand continues light, and with fair receipts the market continues to drag. Choice calves find ard early sale at 53e.; but very few bring more than Sc., which is about the general price. SHEEP AND ‘There has continued a steady wand fal fair demand for sheep and lambs, and the market has been characterized by ley ancy during nearly the whole week. The Detter rades continue to meet witha fair demand from the ter class. Butchers who will not deal in anything but the “yonuine”’ article, therefore make early selections from vach day’s receipts. Our revised quotations above represent the current prices, and the at Chamber Min’s, below, afford a pretty correct insight into the market at the other yards. ‘were generally at an advance of 50c. per head:—90 sheep and lambs at $5 50, Maal rye 348 do.
