It is there- fore reasonable to look for a continustion of the Present active export movement of food, especially so long as bills remain at or near their present high Premium. Of cotton it is yet dificult to predict anything with confidence. The weekly shipmenta from Memphis are now said to average 1,000 bales} we are receiving here something like 2,500 bales a week from various’ sources. It would seem that, with cotton at 50 cents a pound here; and nothing ® pound, so to speak, on the plantations, it was. safe to count upon at least a small steady supply—perhaps enough, now and then, to furnish a few bills. A house in this city which sent a ship to New Orleans some time ago, heard ‘on Sunday that, notwithstanding all that has been said about there being no cotton there, their cap- tain had already secured 1,000 bales. Money is quite easy to-day at5 per cent. Cer- tificates of indebtedness are selling at 97; paper 6 a6 for prime names, Exchange was dull to-day at about 18134 131%. Most of the leading importers have supplied them- selves with bills in advance, and; the sale of Ameri- ean stocks for European account having stopped, for the present, the inquiry for exchange is slack. Gold rallied up to 120% again at the morning board, but was afterwards offered at 119%, and loved at the second board at 11924 a %. The speculation in gold appears to have culminated for the present: the premium is now maintained by the demand of shippers to Europe, the South and. Bouthwest, and by Hoarding. Stocks were lower to-day. There’ were again heavy sales of governments, both at the first and feoond boards. One house sold $400,000 of sixes ef 1881 and 7.30 notes for a customer who had Donght thent at lower prices and wished to realize ‘options, and the coupons touched 96%, and the Fegistered 97. They closed in the afternoon at about 97% 8 %. Atthe close the market was regular, with a tendency to more steadiness. ‘The receipts on the trunk lines are lesding to in- ereased purchases of their stock by the public. Whe gross income of the Central for the year ending in September will probably be ® million and @ half in excess of the income of the previous year. Demand notes, of the old issue, of which there ave something like forty millions still afloat, are selling at 10724 a 10534. We have reason to be- lieve that Mr. Chase's attention has for some time been directed to the necessity of buying up and @ancelling this issue. These demand notes are peecivable for duties, and.eo long as they can be purchased below gold not a dollar of «pxcio will be received at the Custom House. Jf they are not withdrawn from the market Mr. Chase will have to buy in open market the whole of the gold re quired for his October and his January interest— Grom six to eight millians of \ollars. Twenty per eent on cight millions is $1,600,000—a large sum to be spent in this way; and if it wore ascertained that the Secretary was in the market as a buyer of gold; the premium might be nearer thirty ‘than twenty. It is probable that, by judicious management, three-fourths, or even a larger pro- portion, of the demand notes might be picked up without causing the premium to advance beyond £0212 percent. These once out of the way, the Treasury Department would have no further con- @orn about the price of gold. The revenne from eustoms would supply all the gold required for the payment of interest on the debt—no matter what the premium was. We should not be surprised if ‘the Treasury Department was now actually buy- Ing up these demand notes in @ quiet wo; issuing legal tender notes in their stead, law directs.
