On the 20th of June the United States steamer Kana- wha out eut from under the guns of Fort Morgan, at the moulb of Mobile bay, the above harmed vorsel, She had Pus in duripg the mixht, and passed the bieckading ticet. As it wag a very dark night she conid not be seen by our vessels. Lights had been kept burping on the fort aly Bight, so that she had no troubie is finding the ehanrel. The pext moruing she was disovvered by the Susque- Manne, within « half mile of tho fert, unloading bor sarge into a rebel sieamer alongside. The Susquehan- fa, accompanied by the Kanawha, then got under weigh Aad stevmed within gun shot, aud opened Gre on the strange steamer. A Private im the Fifty-third Regiment New Yorks State Volunteers Murdered— ‘The Affair Shrouded im Mystery—The Coroner's Inquest, dic. ‘The residents of the Third ward of Hobokes were aroused ou Monday night last by the loud report of e pis- tol, proseeding from the direction of Fox Hill, just buck of the Klysian Fields; but as no further indications of foul play followed, it was thought that some party Bid discharged the weapon to frighten tbe neighborhood. Two women, who are still at large and unknown t the authorities, were seen coming from Fox Hill shortly af- ter,and the suspicions of several we.e fully arouse'!, yety Strange to say, they did not'moiest the females, who, it is supposed, passed through the city and crussed the ferry to New York. It appears, from the evidence obtained at the Coroner’s jury, that a man named David M. Demarest, a private to Company B, Fifty-third regiment New York State Volunteers, left his reguneut camp at ihe Red House, Harlem, at am early buuron Monday last, and directly te Hoboken, intending to visit the meighborhood of Hack:nsack, where, it is said, he formerly resided with his relatives. He stated before leaving that be anticipated receiving on that day over $100, and the evidence shows that he. visited several public places in Hoboken aud exhibiied considerable money. The two women alluded to were seen conversing with the man while he lay on the ground, and it is alleged that they are implicated in this bloody deed. Coroner Frederick W. Bohnetedt was notifiei on Tues- Gay morning that a man was found murdered noag For Hill—deceased having probably died from the e!- fects of bis wound on Monday night—and he caused the body to be removed to the stables of Mr. B. N. Crane, undertaker, in Garden street.
