It is evidently better, both in a financial and in a political point of view, for govern- meat to pay a little more for supplies and to keep its stocks at a premium than to buy tte supplies at the cost of production, and at the same time to see New York sixes selling at 60a 7. The premium on gold and silver—which has withdrawn them from circulation—is to be re grettes. But it is neither unexpected nor ir- remedishle.
