FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | general fostures of the copper market aro Wepnespay, July 9—6 P.M. The currency panic coutinues. Gold rose this morning to 116%, and exchange on Londen to 129%, and bills on Paris to 4.35. Ata later hour in the day bankers’ dills on London sold at 128%; but there was no disposition to preas them for sale at the decline. Weare entering upon an unpre- cedented crisis in our financial history; experience affords no guide whatever for the future. Many abrewd observers consider that we have reached the culminating point of the panic, and that gold will now decline. But, after all, it may just as well go to 120 as it went to 110, if the merchants continue to buy gold and hoard it. There was no sound commercial reason for any premium at all, and yet people are quarreling over purchases of gold at 115116, One thing is certain: the pre- sent premium on gold puts anend at once to the importation of American stocks from Europe for sale here. That- branch of business is done. In course of time—how soon or at what point in the market no one can foresee—mer- chants will begin to realize profits on their gold, and then it will be discovered that, with a stock on hand of fully $250,000,000, and an export demand only slightly in excess of our re- ceipts from California, we have been dealing in the precious metal at preposterous price. What may happen in the meantime, however, it is quige impossible to foresee. Money becomes “aily more abundant. It was generally offered to-day at 5 per cent, though a few houses still decline to lend under 6. Certifi- cates of indebtedness are selling at 994. Green back demand notes sympathized with gold, and rose to 74 a %, The passage of the new Treasury Note bill insures us an easy money market for some time to come. ‘The stock market was buoyant to-day, and prices of all descriptions were higher, with the single ex. ception of Pacific Mail, which declined 2% per cent at the morning board, closing 105% bid, against 1072/ at the close yesterday. At the morn- ing board, sixes of 1881 rose +4, Treasury notes (7-30) 24, Central 2, Erie 124, Erie preferred 2» Hudson 1, Reading 134; Michigan Central 2, Southern old 124, guaranteed 2, Illinois Centra, 1, Cleveland and Pittsburg *4, Rock Island 1, Ga- lena 124, Toledo 1. There was an active compe- tition for the Erie stocks, which, having risen less than any of the leading railway shares, are expected to exhibit some buoyan- cy. The business of the road for June is stated unofficially to show an increase of $150,- 000 over June last year. It is also stated that Mr. Marsh has made a contract with the Delaware & Hudson Company for the transportation of 50,000 tons of coal, on terms satisfactory to the rail- road. It is probably to these causes that the re- newed inquiry for the stock isdue. Between the boards the market was very buoyant, and prices were higher. Atthe second board there was a large business done, and profits were very gene- rally realized. Prices, in consequence, wero a fraction lower than in the morning.
