2 ‘The New Arm: COLONBL OLMSTRD'S Colenel William B, Olmsted is in New Yorkolty, active- ly engnged tn raising one of the new regiments for by the President's procianiation for three hundred thousand men. Colonel Olmsted is an eld soldier, and served as major in the Fifth York Excelsior regi- ment with gallantry and credit. But his career as « soldier dates further back than this rebellion. He aorved im Mexico, where he received two honorable wounds ‘The Colonel is @ mative of Auburn, Cayug® coun- ty, in the State of New York. He is from a fighting family, his grandiather having Deen & majer im the evolutionary war, and bis father having held the same rapk in the war ov 1912. Tils grandfather had the further honor—an honor uot less distinguishea than ‘his culttva- settloment there before he had a neighbor. But Colone! Olmsted did furcher service to his country, in originating the celebrated Kliswerth Zouaves, and in: treducing thom the system of tactics for which they becune distinguished. The banks now refuse to pay out specie to any one except at the current market price of the article, and many will not sell et all. The changes in the loans and deposits are too small to cali for remark. The circulation of the banks is increasing; currency is so much wanted that the banks cannot make notes fast enough for their wants, zs Money is moderately active at 5 a 6 per cent, most of the loans of which we hear to-day being at the latter rate. At the opening bankers were willing to sell at 12134; but,a demand for Havana account springing up, they raised their rates to 121%, sold freely at thai figure, and then asked 122. Atthe latter figure there is no de- mand. Gold opened at 110, at which figure there were large sales; it then advanced to 110% a %, and fluctuated all day at or near these prices. Demand notes are quoted 1017% a 105. The stock market was irregular to-day. Go. vernments, State stocks and New York railway shares were lower at the first board; the Western —— were generally hicher. Government sixes fell 14, Tennessees *4, Missouris 4%, New York Central 4%, Pacific Mail Erie %, Erie preferred 34, Hudson %. On the other hand, Michigan Cen- tral advanced 4%, Southern old %, guaranteed 1, Illinois Central %, Galena %{, Toledo 4%, Rock Bonds were in good demand; the issues of the Northwestern were all higher. As a ge- neral rule there is a better tone in the market, and more disposition among outsiders to buy stocks than there was a week ago. Between the boards the market was dull, but steady. At the second board stocks were gene- cally lower, without much business. The total amount of the first mortgage is $5,250,000, on which the annual interest is $567,500; of the second mortgage, $5,160,000, on which the annual interest is $361,- 200; of the third mortgage, $2,000,000, on which the interest is $140,000. ‘fhe roud has thus earned, in five months, the whole interest for the year on ita first two mortgages.
