The upform- nate individoal was an Englishman named John Davis, who, on the eventug in question, applied for lodging at the police station, which was willingly granted by Mr. Fd- ware. Reilly, the Chief of Police. The active and intelli- gent officer, surmusing that all was not right (rom obsery- ing the appearance of Davie, had bim removed from the domiciliary department to one of the cells, 80 ae to pre- vent any trouble with the other poor people in that de. partment. Between twelve and one o'clock another visit was made, when the wretched man was found deluged in blood. This was occasioned by his cutting tery in his arm with a knife. He was then ali ut, although every attonty aid to him, he ex- pired sortiy afterwards. Yesterday Coroner Gaffney had a jury empanzelied, and, after hearing evidence cor roborative Of the above facts, brought in the following verdict:—‘We find that Joba Pavis, aged thiriy-live came to his death by committing suicide in acell of the police station of Jersey City, while laboring under an atiack of delirium tremens.” Arrival of the Mississippi at Boston. Boston, June 26, 1862. The United States steamer Mississippi, from New Or. Jeans on the 18th inst., arrived here this morning TaD FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, ‘Tauestat, Jane 26—6 P. M. There is no excitement in the money and ex- change markets; but rates are firmly maintained. Money is worth 5 per cent on call, and certificates of public indebtedness 10014. The scarcity of cur- rency has given rise to much surprise. Bankers’ bills on London opened this morning at 120, rose to 120%, 120%, and closed at about 121. Gold opened at 104%, advanced to 109, 4, %, then fell back and closed 1093¢ bid. Green backs sold at 104% @ %, and were wanted this afternoon at the latter price. The supply of stocks from abroad continues to create a demand for exchange, which, in ite torn, in the absence of active exports, creates a steadily advancing market for coin. The present advance, sndden apparently unreasonable as it has been, will at all events have the effect sooner or later of checking the importa. tion of American stocks. Every advance of 1 per cent on bills is 2 per cent less profit on the sale of such stocks imported from Europe. It will likewise Jead toan increase in our shipments of Produce of all kinds. There was no change in the Michigan shares, Governments and State stecks were all about % better, We notice considerable wetivity iv the bonds of the Chicago and North- western. These bonds have beer unacconntably neglected for some time, and, though the assented | bonds have risen 5, and the second mortgage 6 per cent, within two or three days, they are still from 2@ to 30 per cent lower than other bonds of similar character and apparently no greeter merit. There have been some heavy purchases of Toledo lately. It is un- derstood that the whole floating debt of the con- cern is funded, and that every car on the road is fully employed. It is the lowest of the dividend paying stocks. Galena, Rock Island and the Michi- gan shares have been somewhat neglected of late. Central continues very active. The quidnunes are busy debating the question whether the dividend will be 3 or 34. Nothing will be known till Mr. Corning returns to Albany. The scarcity of first class bonds has attracted attention to Central as an investment; it is probably as certain to pay 6 per cent as any bond m the eoun- try.
