AND COMMERCIAL. Wepnespar, June 25—6 P. M. There has been less excitement to-day than there ‘was yesterday in the exchange and bullion mar- kets; but prices do not give way. Exchange on London opened with some weakness at 119, but soon rose to 119% a 120. There were some sales of small amounts at 120; at 11934 a considerable business was done. Gold opened at 10834, sold veely at that figure during the morning, advanced in the afternoon to 108%, and closed at that bid. With gold at 10834, a banker who ships specie to cover must sell his bills at 119%, in order to pay expenses. Large supplies of gold are coming in from the public for sale. But the demand from the bankers who are remitting to Europe the pro- ceeds of American stocks sold here for European account is in excess of the supply. The steamer from Boston to-day only took out $63,000; a very heavy shipment on Saturday next is predicted by the bankers. The money market is moderately active. Cal! loans are 5 per cent, and very little paper sells under 5. Green backs, which came out freely this morning in consequence of yesterday's advance, are quoted 103% a 10414. A remarkable scarcity of legal tender notes was developed to-day. Half a dozen banks have been trying in every direction to borrow them. Though there are $90,000,000 of these notes afloat, it seems that the payment of $1,126,000 of them into the Sub-Treasury yester- day swept the market of them. This is a pretty effectual answer to the outcry of the people who are so afraid of an inflation of pgper money. Mr. Chase's first issue is out of the market alto- gether, being held at 4 per cent premium, His last issue, though to the extent of ninety millions, has been so quickly absorbed by the business wants of the country that a sudden with- drawal of a million of the notes from the market of New York creates « scarcity of money, affects the money market und embarrasses the banks. The new issue is most urgently wanted, and the public will feel grateful if the measure is put through Congress without further delay. The stock market opened weak and dulf this morning, and remained so till the afternoon. At the second board prices rallied, and stocks closed rather better than yesterday. There was no material change in government or State stocks. Bonds continue in good de- mand. The supply of bonds from Europe con- tinues, however, to be ample, and appearances are not.in favor of a further advauce in the bonds which are largely held abroad. We should recom- mend the public to give the preference, in select- ing investments, to securities which have not here- tofore been favorites in Europe, but which hase been chiefly held here, However good bonds may be, and however sure the interest on them, they cannot but decline in price if the market is glutted with them. Central opened thie morning at 94, declined to 9324, 9324,.and subeequently ral- lied to 93% and 94. Pacific Mail jumped up 1 per cent this morning; it closed 116%4 bid. The West- ern shares were all 4% a % per cent lower in the morning, but raliied at the second board. At the close the market was firm, the following being the last quotations:—United States 6's, registered, 1881, 102% a 10274; do. 6's, coupon, 1881, 10634 a 106445 do, 5's, 1874, 9634 a 96% Treasury notes, 7 3-10 per cent, 105% a 58% a 58%; Virginia 6’ a 87; North Carolina 6's, 7124 a 7224; Missouri 6's, 514% 9 5154; American gold, 108% a 108%; Pacific Mail, 116% a 116%; New York Central, 93% a 94; Erie, 37 a 3734; do. preferred, 64% a 64%; Hud- son River, 46! 47; Harlem, 17 a 174%; do. pre- ferred, 43 a 4314; Reading, 5754 a 58; Michigan Central, 64 a 6444; Michigan Southern and North- ern Indiana, 2744 a 2734; do: guaranteed, 6124 4 62; Panama, 13734 a 137%; Illinois Central, 6154 a 62; Galena and Chicago, 71% a 71%; Cleve- land and Toledo, 48 @ 4834; Chicago and Rock Island, 67% a 67%; Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, 78 a 79; Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, 36 a 3634; Mlinois Central bonds, 7's, 9444 a 96. The business of the Sub-Treasury was as follows $663,697 21 310,000 00 983,601 64 15,214,993 65 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $22,999,143 53, and the balances $1,487,256 19. The coupons dueJuly 1 of the Sacramento Val- ley Railroad will be paid at the office of Schuchardt & Gebhard. The coupons due July 1 on the fire, civil and school bonds of the city of San Francis- co will be paid by W. T. Coleman & Co. The Metropolitan Bank has declared a semi-an- nual dividend of three per cent, payable July 7; the Atlantic Bank, of Brooklyn, a semi-annual dividend of five per cent, payable July 1; the Washington Marine Insurance Company, a semi- annual interest dividend of three and a half per cent, payable July 1; the Continental Bank, a semi-annual dividend of three per cent, payable July 1; the Great Western Marine Insurance Company, @ semi-annual interest dividend of three and a half per cent, payable on the Ist of July; the Mercantile Fire Insurance Company, a semi-an- nual dividend of five per cent, payable July 1. The project of the new tariff, as laid before the House of Representatives by the Ways and Means Committee, contains, as might have been expect ed, somo errors and oversights. Among others, jead ore is taxed 114 cent additional per pound; but the duty on pig lead has not been increased at all. Now, of lead ore we have probably never imported over two hundred tons a year, while we import regularly over twenty thousand tons of pig lead, The object of the committee probably waa, and cortainly should have been, to lay the duty on pig lead. This oversight will probably be correct- ed without delay. What the country wants is, on the one hand, to render itself independent of the foreign world for its supply of lead, and, secondly, to derive a substantial revenne from any forcvign lead which may come here. The Western mom- bers should look to their interest in this matter. The Boston Post of yesterday furnishes the fol- lowing information relative to Lake Superior cop- per mining companies:— Copper is very firm at 23 cents, with an upward ton- dency.
