The Combinativns for Conptroeller and Cerperation Counsel—Indications of a Smash Up in the “Ring”—A Change of Heads of Departments Propesed—Union Caucuses on State Politics ut the Everett House—Anti-Repablicanism the Basis of Action—Thurlow Weed’s Visit to ¢ City—His Position on the Programme ef Seymour for Governor and Evarts fer Licutenant Governor, é&c., dic. ‘The politicians of the city and State have been exceed ingly active during the past ten days; caucusses without number havo ybeld, and in every direction the notes of preparatic been sounded. Most of the move- ments, however, are for the election of this or that person to office. The incentive to action is, therefore, the contro) ‘of the spoils. For some time past there has been a great deal of pipe laying and forming of combinations for Comptroller , that office being considered the great prize in thiscity. The Political combination at the City Hall known as the “Ring” is said to be playing an important par. in this work. It te gene.ally understood that the politicians ‘embraced in that circie have been pusmnng the claims of Avgustus Purdy for Comptroller and John E. Devlin for Corporation Counsel, but of late have been quietly drop- Ping Devlin and using the name of Samuel Jones, partner of Judge Barnard. These movements have stirred up considerable commotion both inside and outside of the “Ringy? @ portion of that clique being anxious that F. I. A. Boole should be trotted out for the Comptroller prize; aud already there are strong symptoms of a regu- far smash up in the “Ring” family, and o gonera! row, including the fermation of a new ‘Ring’ and the sppointment of new heads ef depart- ments. The attitude of Boole towards Genet ts looked upon as a move in that direction, buving im view the complete overthrow of Genet, and the removal of his patronage, now received through the workings of the “Ring” and in the Street Department. Another class, however, interpret Boole’s movements to be merely an attempt to forco Gevet to uso his influence for him (Boole) for Comptroller. In other words, simply threats: support me or loose your patronage, The effort that was recently made, while Alderman Henry was Acting Mayor, to get up a combination on Mr. Ravelings, and then on Senator Cornell, Street Commissioner—neither of whom could get votes enough for their endorse- ment—the summoning of Mayor Opdyke by telegraph, and bis arrival just m timo to puta stop to the pro- ceedings, all go to show that a desperate game is being played. At the inceting of the Board of Alder- men last Monday thore wero further developments in this line. The veto of the Mayor on the resolution onter- taining Thurlow Weed was brought up. Boole led the party for overriding the veto, and Genet for sustaining the veto, notwithstanding he originally introduced and urged the passage of the resolution, The test vote on this and two or three other questions exhibited Genet as the leader of'a minority of three and Boole the majority of thirteen—s significant fact, which gave rise to the belief that we were soon to have a new Street Commis- sioner, and that Genet's power had departed. The de- fiant attitude of Genet indicated that he still felt sure, considered himself master of the situation, and that no Street Commissioner would be appointed by Mayor Opdyko, for the very good roasou that a new combina- tion had been formed, with Mayor Updyke a partner in Genet’s “Ring,” which, as far as appointments are eon- cerned, had headed oif Boale’s “Ring” of thirteen. What will work out of this we leave events to determine. At Present there is a good deal being 61id about forming a combination with Boole for Comptroller and Richard Gorman for Corporation Counsel. Devlin’s friends assert that they are making no com- Dination with any candidate for Comptrolier, bat that they are pushing their man forward upon his own merRs only. ‘This may account for the movement of the “Ring” to take up Samuel Jonce instead of Devlin. Seuator Connolly and bis frionds are quite active, and he hasa strong party to back him. Tae Lynch influeves in Mo- wart Hall @re all backing him, and his action on the Bishop Hughes ecclesiastical tenure act has given him A great deal of positive strength. Several of the candi- dates for Corporation Counsel have beov trying to form combinations with him to obtain the advantage of the wupport of his strength; but we have been unable w ascertain that any of thom have succeeded. In the anti Ring portion of Tammany we hear tho name of Water- busy for Corporation Counsel ana Clancy for Comptrolier spoken of ; but a combination in that shape would Lo #0 weak thas it is ramoret Clancy’s name is to be dropped , and @ union formed elsewhere, some say that it will be Haws for Comptroller and Waterbury for Corporation Counsel, but to this wegivenocretence Haws is actively ‘at work preparing for a re-election, and i. ready to form Mey alliance to accomplisb that, wiiiet the detern nation ofthe radical republicans to turn bim out and cbtain control of that department forces him into altiauces else- where; but whether the above or some ether alliances are doing made by him wehnve only the general gousi tojndgefrom. Messrs. On this point it was generally conceded that the circulation of documents should be one mude adopted, At the sxme time Mr. Brooke stated that this would do but litsie good, unless they united at the polls on election day, and that the union should be ‘one that woutd reongnize every element in opposition to the radical republiemns. A committce 0! nino was finally appointed to agree upon eome course of action and report to a future meeting for its adoption On this committees were appointed Stephen P. Russell, Mor- gan L. Supervisor Purdy, although his name was sppeoded to the resoln- tion, did mot attend. C, Godfrey Gunther sent letters endorsing the movement. As near az wo can ascertain, this movement originated with Lusiness men, who first broached the matter to Mr. Primo, of the Journal of Com- ‘merce; and be, in consultation with Brooks, Purdy, Gun her, Wood and several others, got up the invitation. ‘Whether this will amount to anything, or only prove a sort of tea party and a general fele-a-fee with each other, we leave for future events to deermine. The other Union movement, se much talked o/, is that of forming a union on the Stato ticket, with Seymour for Governor umd Evarts for Lieutenant Governor. To what extent they would carry thetr schemes, aud how far succeed in subverting the republican party, was a question that would no doubt control the action of the conservative portion of the party; but at present he would not—in fact it would be folly for him to endorse it—nor would he now reject it.
