MONDAY, JUNE 9, 1882. Musical and Theatrical. Last week was the grea: benefit week at many of the theatres, and, as the seasons were closing at several of them, and new lessees wore about to enter upon a frosh suminer seasun, (here was more briskness in the theatri- cal business than during the woek previous. Next week ‘wo shall have considerable variety, not only in the pro- grammes, but in the managements. Miss Muggie Mitchell, /'rofessor Anderson and the Florences al! ake their appearance as managers, aud, as we shall probably have a pleasant spell of weather now, preceding tho in- touse heat of summer, the theatre and Opera patrons will no doubt avail themselves of the novelties pro sented. The public aro already aware that we are to have a brief summer season of opera, at the Acadomy of Music, under the management of Napoleon Ullman. Nor ia the promised treat confined to opera alone. Gottschalk is to intorsperse it with bis magnificent performances, and Professor Horrmann with his prestidigitarianism. All the talont in tho operatic line will be represented, includ- ing Briguoli, Susini, Amodio, Miss Kellogg and Madame In addition to these favorite artists, Mr. Ull- man promises us two debutants—first, Madame Comte Borchard, who has a Europoan fame and was recently “thestar of the Opera’? in New Orleans; and second, the Sixth New York cavatry, and Kighty-third New York | Madame Herrmann, who will make hor firat appearance in the “Child of the Regiment.” The seasvn is to con- tinue for six consecutive nights, cominencing on Wednes- five, who were slightly wounded, They were captured | day with “ Lucrozia Borgia,” in which D’Angri will take herfavorite character of Orsini, and Madame Borchard Lucrezia. Mr. Ullman, in order to popularize Italian opera, as well, no doubt, as to suit the stringency of the times, has reduced the price of admission to haifa dollar. Miss Maggie Mitchell commences her season at Laura Keene’s theatre to-night, of which establishment she has assumed the lesseeship. Miss Mitchell appeara in her original and favorite character of Fanchon, the Cricket, in the German play of that name, translated and adapted for herself. The piece will be put upon the stage, wo understand, ia the best stylo.and with the charming acting of Miss Mitchell herself, combined with an excellent company, it ¢an hardly fail to have a ran, “Fanchon’ is on the programme for eyory night in the week. ‘The grand operatic romance of ‘The Syren,” arranged South everywhere, ‘than that of a great battlo raging | from Auber’s opera of “La Syreno” oxpressly for Miss near Richmond. Ali have confidence in the Southern troops—all believe that when they moet the in- vaders of our soil they will repel them as the fem rock does the wave that beats in vain against it into our country to desolato our homes and rob usof our property—nay, to commit the most horrid of outrages—- and they will rush upon him with a bravery and deter. mination that he will be ulferly unable to withitand. ‘They fight for thoir country’s rights and honor, and in defence | of the women and children of the South. Thoy will de- | tend them or die, There is nothing so disheartening to thoso gallant sous of the South as to be ordered to ‘fail Dack,” as it is called. They advance with avidity and jor—they retreat with hoavy hearts and deep mortifica- relVe.tTust they are not to be compelled to pursue the rado any more, but that, bravo patriots as they met ey will be ordered to do what is to them, most agroeable of all things—to mect and drive back the ene. Extensive preparations have been made cular and operatic piece with all the accessories of scenery, costumes and machinery. Miss Richings made a great success in the “Enchantress,” which she has performed for several wosks past. In putting a now piece of asimilar character on the stago wo have no doubt that tho mamagemont will make anothor good hit, for Miss Richings is a charming singer as well as % most graceful actress, and we perceive that the programme contains a much larger share of songs than fell to her in the ‘‘Enchantross.”” Professor Anderson inaugurates ® summer season at my. They may be too disastrous to Ne iae | We havo an abiding faith in our peuple, and believe they would continue faithful to the end; but nevertheless it is too plain that the handing over the metropolis. to the enemy wouid bring upon us embarrassments so great that rather than place the Slate in such an exigency as that, we should fight before Richmond as though all lost if we were defeaiel. We have tho most confident belief that there will bo such fighting, that we shall (riumph, and that Richmond wilt bo finally saved from the enemy; for if ho caunot take her now, with all his means, he never can. Don’t Like “Yankee Devic [From tho Richmond Dispatch, May 24.) Our Northern brethren are now engaged in an agsi. duous endeavor to restore tho Union aud set the Stal ‘and Stripes afloat in Richmond, by laying plans to mur- der and rob allof our people who may wish to prevent the consummation of their dearly cherished project. For sevoral days past they have cavorted around the suburbs in sufficient numbors to pillage with impunity, ‘Dut not to meet any respectabls turce, on whose app ance they would fly like frightened suoep. Yesterday, with characteristic caution , they sent up Professor Lowe iu his famous balloon to observe the motions of the re- vels. Tue machine, which was distinctly ol ved bya Jargo nutnber of spectators in this city, was embellished with two United States flags, and ascended about four miles from the city in a northeast direction. No doubt \ the observations of the Yankeo aeronaut wore satisfacto- for the past woek, in order to complete tho preparations for the spectacular burlesque of Charles Gayler, enti:led “The Wizard's Tempest.”” The programme promises something magnificent in the way of scenic effect, optical delusion and the peculiar art of the Professor. Mr. An. derson announces @ strong company of artists, and no doubt will produce avery fine piece. We understand that it is an entirely novel performance, combining @ variety of features rarely if over presented on the stage. During the past week Wallack has been sustaining the reputation of his theatro by the presentation of those fine old plays which accomplish se much in pre- serving a true dramatic public taste. On Saturday night an adaptation of ‘Fast Men of the Olden Times” was given, in which abevy of first class artists appearea, for the benefit of Mr. and Mrs. John Sefton. To-night the public are informed that the treasuror of the os- tablishment, the popular and courteous Mr. Moss, will take his benoflt, on which occasion the comedy of *Lit- tle Treasuro,’’ a piece new at this theatro,’’ and Buck- stone’s fine comedy of ‘Rural Felicity,’ will bo produced with the entire strength of the company on the boards, Mr. Wallack annowncos that he will address the andience during the eyoning, and, as Sir. Walinck always has somothing happy and intercsting to say, bis speech will no doubt be one of the pleasantest fuatures in the enter- tainmont.
