Buell’s corps will fight for Driver's bill, and that the nurse who has kindly taken charge of me, will be able to give mea glass of water fram the running stream, which I almost fancy I hear rippling beyond the bill. The centre corpsof the army has not drank from a running stream since they, left Pittsburg Landing. The streams you see laid dowa are at this time either imaginary, or are swamps im which mud alone exists. The men have to dig near the old channels of these dried up streams, and sometime succeed in obtaining a dirty, yellow water, which is filtered through the soft clay, ‘THE SANITARY COMMISSION NEZDS ANOTHER BATTLE. I think the Sanitary Commission should insist on Gene~« ral Halleck fighting immediately. Would it not be an’ act of mercy to push forward and end the long delay, during which, as if tne natural result of inaction, the hospitals are filling up, and the camps are leaving their dead behind them in such numbers? My sickness has given men taste for hospitals, and during the days of sunshine and strength I have visited several of them. ‘The diseases are of no terrible character—neither dan- gerous nor contagious—but of the debilitating character. which weakens @ man in body and renders him de- spondent of heart and mind. Tho divisien hospitals are full, and one cannot ride along the lines of any corps but what he will see the solemn procession which is headed by the chaplain. Behind the trenches in every camp they lie, their humble graves neatly marked with wooden headstones, and surrounded by rustic railing made from the small saplings which form the umdcre growth of the immense forest in which the who! army is hidden, It does look as if the battle field ha® yeas of the terrors of death than the camps where the men are idle. Thave « paragraph in the first of my letter annoum. cing that the siege of Corinth had tijun. How it is pro~ gressing I cannot tell in the sume space. Each day in the early light of morning the pickets open with sharp- shooters’ practice, and all day, all along the line, is heard the sharp crack of the squirrel rifle, the louder re- Port of the Enfield, and the duller croak of the common rifle musket, resounding along the line and re-echoed by the rebels. It would be impossible for me to state in detail the numerous adventures along the line of the out- posts, Ihave memorandums in full of how a Lieutenand Hope, Fourth Kentucky, who, while under arrest, has Deen scouting around the camp, and who, while General Sherman was deciding whether to bombard a certain house in which a rebel company had fortified themselves, enlisted two other officers who were im the samo sus- pended state as himself, and succeeded in storming the house and dislodging the rebels; memorandums of sharp- General Halleck’s Preparation—Cautious Advances— Picket Shoottmg—Taking Positions—Sharpshouters En- gaged—How the Army Moves to the Right— What Is to shooters’ practice, storming parties who have made de- scents on cotton gins and spring houses situated in the Sea IRY JAMES, Agent. Port Royal Sherman, whom i was supposed by his seven milo intrenchment knowledge and several weeks experience in the sovereign State of South Carolina, had finished his education in the line ef fleld fortificatians, but he ap- pears to have more confidence in his brigadiers than in himself, and I am told that he actually required the com- manders of brigades in his division to sign a documeng requiring them to supervise the making as weil as plan ning of the works in their front, and holding them re- sponsibleforthesame. Asa consequence his|line is badly sntronched because the different brigadiers worked on their own hook, astheysay herein the West. Gen. Robert MoCook got to work first, and planned and built his works to suit nis own front, General Fry, on his right, had to arrange his works to suit those of McCook, and General Schoepif had to accommodate himself to the two nnd not tothe ground. Istopped ® moment near Schoepf this morning, and found he had encamped beyond his intrench- menis. . [have intimated, previous to the digression of the last few sentences, that probably the works are to be advanced shortly. In the front of General Buell, and on the main Corinth road—let the reader in his mind em- phasize the name, and remember that it applies to aroad which is a tangent from Pittsburg Landing to Coriath— there is arange of hills which bave been called Driver’ hills for the sake of convenience the name being that of the owner of the plantation. Driver's hills are higher than the range on which weare situated; and, besides, it is stated they abound in fine springs ana running streams. ‘These hills will be tae first that the advance movement will bring us to, and I doubt not we shail have to Charles B. Molin, Company F, Second Minnesota in- fantry—is now my desk), met with his fate on Sunday. A sharpshooter of the Second Minnesota, to revenge the death of his comrade, picked him off with unerring alm; and through the marine glasses the officers saw the rebel fall to the ground. ROW THE ARMY 18 MOVING TO THE RiGHT. But are we ready te advance on Driver's and divers other hills and intrench anew? I think not. Pope is not intrenched, and his left is five miles from Corinth. Buell and Themasare. Yesterday the whole line moved tothe right—no farther in advanee, but along and behind the works—that is, General W. T. Sherman (Kentucky Sher. man), who is on the extreme right, moved in sucha manner that his left rested where bis right had been— moving thus his ewa length to theright. Tho next 4i- vision took his place; and thus through the whole army fa movernent was made to theright. General (Kentueky) Sherman will throw up his works and shertly be ready to move again; and thus the whoie line will again move to the right. AND WHAT 19 TO BR ACCOMPLISHED BY mw, Theaim must be apparent to the enemy. General Halleck is well aware thathe will have to fight for his position and to accomplish what he aimsat. This aim is to gain possession of the two railroads—the Mobile ‘and Ohio and Memphis and Charleston—and to strike the prairie land west of Corinth. This would be am achieve. ment which would cause the evacuation of Corinth, or a flerce and desperate movement on our leftand rear, A vigorous shelling will cause the same result, if mado from our present position, The movement to the right would bring Pope to the present position of Gen. Buell, and Bueli to that of Thomas, Tho above idea is that of several militarxcontiomen with whoum J have canversed, ht for their possession. Tho rebel pickets are now in possession ef them. A fight ‘at long range takes place dally between the rebels posted along these lines and our own pickets just in their front. A daring rebel who, with along range gua, had ascended a tree and sent two or three of our men to their Jong homes (the frame work around the grave of one— the rebels did considerable exccution. On the left a couple of regiments of infantry became engaged, and’ added to the interest of the engagement. After fighting for an hour and a half the rebels withdrew, leaving us in possession of the position and with twenty-five killed and 150 wounded of our men on our hands, GENERAL NELSON HAS AN ARTILLERY DUEL. I sallied out of camp on the afternoon of yesterday te the froat, where ‘Bull Nelson” was indulging his artil- lery in ‘‘man-of-war style.”’ It appears that a section of rebel artillery had opened on some workmen on the for- tifications in Nelson’s front, and that wasan iasult which Nelson had no idea of submitting to. The section was wheeled into position and seme twenty-five shots exchanged without any loss on our parte The shells from our guns exploded with great accuracy, and, I have learned since the fight, with good effect, while those of the rebels were evidently defective. Deserters say the rebels lost a colonel of infantry and quite a number of privates. WHAT THE DESERTERS 8aY. Three deserters from the Seventeenth Louisiana came into the camp last night. They did not know the name of the colonel killed by the shells of General Nelson yes- terday. They say that camp rumor puts the rebel force at 110,000. They areallon balf rations. There are quite anumber of regiments who are under guard to prevent their deserting, while it is a common thing to place men of one regiment on guard around the encampment of another. They say Price was undoubtedly killed in the fight with Pope. Nobody believes it. It only establishes the fact that Price is opposed to Pope, fact worth rememboring, Aside from the thou- sand and one statements flying about there is sufficient ovidence to indicate that tho rebel army is in a state of terrible aemoralization. General Lovell has doubtless. reached him. The several armies of Price, Van Dorn,, Johnston, Polk and Crittenden, which Rave figured in, different parts of the country, have, doubtless, reached Corinth, while it is knows that portions of the Virginia army was engaged in the fight at Pittsburg Landing. Accompanying flags of truce which have lately come into our lines were Colonels Jacob Thompson and Pegram, of Rich Mountain notoriety. The former, whom it will be remembered was Secretary of the Interior during the administration of James Buchanan, is now on the staff of Peter Beauregard. Many deserters come imto the lines who represent themselves as West Tennessee conscripts, who have an ardent desire to get home again. Wonks Bayons Comirn, Miss., May 26, 1862. The people of the North are doomed,to be disappointed in their antictpations of a great and final struggle at this point, We shall have no Waterloo, may havea Yorktown. But there is littte probability of a great struggle here. General Halleck does not intend te hazard all in an attack on the works which, one mile ands quarter in our front, frown on our advances. The people must bear with fortitude the disappointment and centent themeelves with believing that General Halleck knows vest, For nearly two months they (the public) have waited in daily anticipation of a struggle where result would be doubtful until the day was over, Atnotime ia the war have two armies so nearly equal im numbers, ‘equipments and spirit faced each other, and if the battle should ensue let each fluctuation, each ebb and flow of the contending armies, be watched with anxiety. Dread, hope and fear, for the story will not be developed till the day is over. Ne conjecture of ite denouement can be safely formed till the victery ts lost or won. But shall we have sueh o struggle? Nex Already the polioy of the Commanding General has de~ veloped itself, and the impending conflict bas degene- rated into @ slege—s slow, tedious and uninteresting siege. This is the ‘lame and impotent conclusion” of all the mighty preparations of which the Western newspaper correspondents and the pestiferous Cairo spe- cials have advised the public, much to the discontent @ Gen, Halleck and to the expulsion of a majority of the correspondents from the army lines. The dear people have found rebel evacuations so it that when oar generals, after labored movements splendid general. ship, have compelled them to leave their strongholds, they appear to think they have let them get away and proceed to condemn them for inefficiency, This is what General Halleck is striving to do by @ siege, and, should he aecomplish it, will have dene only that whigh he could have done by a pitched battle and at @ much less seriou expenditure of humaa life.
