For- tunately the fire wasidiscovered just in time to provent an explosion, several of the barrels being aircady char. red. The Northern Light brings only $225,000. The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $20,821,943 95, and the balances $772,809 04. The exchanges for the week ending to-day were $136,893,373 50, being a daily average of $22,815,562 26, against $23,804,760 85 for the week ending on Saturday last. The Howard Insurance Company has dec}, dividend of eight per cent, payable June 9, Coleman’s San Francisco circular, per Northern Light, says:— Our remittances to the Atlantic side for the last few months havo consisted so ly of coin, and the demand for interior use since the commeosementof active miving operations has been so great, that the supply on band is at present be ow the usual Ls oe ‘8 large amount of bullion is now im the Mint, and stock of com will bo amply replenished in a fow days. Arrivals of tren. sure from the intorior since 80th ult. have averaged about $100,000 per day, The supply of bullion offering is not large, but the demand ig vory light, and prices greatly depressed. The Chicago Tribune of Wednesday thus notices money and exchange matters in that city:— New York oxchange is working a shaie closer, but rates are ag heretofore, viz.;—par a3, buying, and i promium as tho seiling rate. Gold is very fim. but as the rate goes up the brvkers keep the margin wider. The buying price for the day was 23% a 8 per cent; seliing 3% a4percent. The ie in New York is 434; but our dealeia eo not like to keep quite up to Wi all street figures. The Cincinnati Commercial of the same day re- marks: Bankers have had a rather better demand for discounts during the past week, but, as we have before intimated, it cannot be taken as ‘an evidence of any material revival The rates of interest 6a8per cent are still ac- cepted on choice short date paper. The same names with longer dates pass mostly at 10 per cent. Bankers do not care to take much paper that foe juires a charge of a highor rate to cover exigencie: ange is kept so even by the easy creation of it in forwarding Treasury notes, that it hardly merits a comment. The current selling rate allows a fair margin on the shipment of yernment currency, and when bankers get anything oi a surplus or acailfor a large bill, they make concessions on our selling.
