TO THE RDITOR OF THE HERALD. 1 have noticed in one or two of your ime inues articles from your army correspondents rofies'ting se ‘verely on the conduct of the volunteer surgeons gut by the State authorities. The following from the camp neat Richmond is a specimen Physicians sent down at State expense to assist the army are one of those peculiar humbugs’ shat are the more despicable because they impose Ed £0 good « phase of our common haman nature. the State ities have some favored doctors whom they want to send upon pleasant exeursiona at the —_ Bio expense, We ean't object, but let them mot send fo the army, and publish that they do good, They “40 no good, They come down, and run around 10 600 sighte, ant up handsome operations and gohome, The ardu- ous duties of an army surgeon bave never yet been lightened by any of these gentry, Now, bit, I think Ioan soon show to any anprojudiced tind that nothing Gould be more unjiet than the above statement, , The headquarters of the army is not the <pplace to appreciate the services of tle Yolunteor gur Ay Unless they happen there immediately after @ pattie, which has not been the case generally A: but little for them to do, and they look aroun t | aud soom go off, as your correspondent says. But look he the hospital depots in ali our large ; in the Is about Fortress Monroe; in the hospital ships; is places where the hardest work of the surgeon and Physician is to be done, and there you will find the yol- uuteer surgeon. To show how great is the error of your corresponde d to the character of tho sur- goons tate authorities, I will mention reported for duty, by order of al Director, at the Mill Creek Hesyital, Camp » of which I bad charg essor Alden n March, of Albany; Henry Mareh, raressor Alfred ©. Post; Dr G. Woloott, a Known surgeon of Utica; Dr. Kissam, of Brooklyn; Dr. Olcott, Professor Stephen smith, of 3 Dr. Thomas C, firinsinage, of lroy. At other hospitals near by I noticed, among many other eminent men, Dr. Sylvester Willard, of Al- bany; Dr, Swinburne, Dr. E. H. Parker, of Poughkeepsie: also, Prot. Willard Parker, of New York, who remained | days, not to see sights, but to give his pro- tees and tee to those younger in the to seek it. These are only 5 pol inemt men who, without pay, have sacrificed hendreds of dollars, in leaving large aud wealthy practices in our large cities, to place their taleats and experience at the service of the goyornment. Had they been requested, when at General McClellan’s head- quarters, to remain in anticipation of a battle, they he ld gladly have done go, aud not left as your corre- ent states, Ido not, Mr. Editor, mean to say that there have not been exceptions—that some medical men are not open to the above charge—but, as it stands, it is »o sweeping. For the entire truthfulness of my wks, lean call the army surgeons about Fortresa puroe to witness, and also the oftieers of the regiments stationed at Camp "Hamilton. With great respect, lam your obedient servant, FRED. D. LENTE, M. D. Cow Sramg May 26,1862. The Three French Officers. TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK HERALD, Tt was not my intention, nor that of my friends, Lieu- tenant Vifquain and Monsieur de Beaumont (under- signed), to publish any refutation of the false and most calumuious reports to which our imprisonment down South had given rise. We thought that our return would in itself be sufficient justification, especially as we pro- pose Lo tuke service. as common soldiers should the situa- tions we are trying to obtain be refused us. i It appears, however, that our good intentions are destined to be unappreciated. We meet with so much ineredulity and ill nature that we-owe it to ourselves to state, as briefly as possible, the outline of the case. Proofs and particulars we are ready and willing to give to those who have a right to exact them, or who ask for them in a proper manner. My friends and I remain in Washington and New York expressly for the purpose of giving any in‘ermation which may be desired. We had (that is, Lieutenant Viiyuain and 1) the Fifty-third regiment New York Voluniecrs (a Zouaves). This regiment was disbanded witho: reason being given for its being so, and that at the very time when it had suffered so much ou the expedition to Hatteras. Deeply wounded at not having been allowed an opportunity of distinguishing ourselves, and of reap- ing Some glory in return for all the misery we bad gone through, we felt as if each day spent in ibaction was day lost. We decided, therefore, on setting out on horse- bhok to join General Banks, for whom I had several let- ters, and with whom I bad the honor of being slightly acquainted. Our intention was to ask him to take us on his staff a8 sup¢rnumeraries, fooling assured that after the first engagement we should obtain a permanent situ- ation. Inthe event of General Banks not accepting our services we intended offering them to some other federal general. Two days after leaving Washington, and while we thought ourselves within the fecerai lines, we were arrested by a mounted picket of forty men, were taken to Richmond, and there imprisoned. We Had only one wish, one desire, to return North; but how could this be effected !—oniy by“ ruse,” for, having gone as amateurs, we could not hope to be exchanged as prisoners of war, while our having served the United States prevented our consuls from claiming us. Wewere therefore compelled, in order to get away (rom Ricimond, where we had been confined & month, to feign a desire to serve as volunteers under General Beauregard. Our object in doing this was to approwch the federal lines as soon as we got near them, We swam across a river and escaped, risking our lives several times in doing so, At last we had the happiness of again standing under the dag which it is our dearest wish to continue to serve. On my word of honor this is the exact truth. Many smile incredulously at our having started with- ‘out @ pass from the secretary of War; but there would be no need for such ill-natured astonishment if they would only reflect that we are ali three foreigners, con- soquently very impulsive, and that the eldest of us is not yet twenty-four; so that if we were a little rash it is no great wonder. / trust you will publish this immediately.
