2 — NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, MAY 22, 1862, The Turf. ° Fasmon Puxascre GRrounp AssociaTion—Trorrinc — ‘Tuesday, May 20, match $500, mile heats, best threo fn five, in harness. D. Tallman named blk. g Lancet ‘H. Woodruif named s, 1 ton mee fered The above race between Lancet and Frank Temple was @ capital contest throughout—by far the best trot that has taken place th ‘The time made wa: lent. Lancet has much improved in appearanee since his last race, being evidently possessed of © greater degree of streugth and energy. He went through the race very gamely, much to the delight of his Frauk Temple appeared about the same as on previous occasions, and performed a little better than over be fore, but could not gu quite fast enough to beat ve “glashing black gelding.” ‘Tho betting previous to the start was slightly in favor of Hiram’s horse; but almost as 500n as the word was given Lancet seeined to have thocall. After the first heat one haudved to Uhirty was freely offored on the biack, and even heavier odds traus- pired in some uces. The track was vory nicely pre- pared for the race. —Frank Temple won the inside position, the quarter pole in thirty soooads. This. wavane tage the little fellow m: wo hold to the haf. milo poe, which he passod in 1:14}. From inat point to near the threoquarter pole the race ‘was very interesting. Lancet had closed up to Frank, and they were going side and side, hke @ Ledger team. Approaching the three-quarter pole, ‘thepress having Qeen put on too stvong for Frank, be Jeft’his feet, iesing three or four jengths, which threw Bus chanees for the hoat entirely away; aud, as a mutter cf course, Lancet came home a winner by two or three lengths in 2: ‘Secon Heat.—Laneet now had the pole. The horses had @ very oven start, ani went around tho turn at a pretty lively gait; but before they got to the quartor polo, Lancet, at that time a length ahead, broke up as Hiram pulled Frauk out to pass’ him, he, t broke up, and floundered about uxtil Lancet bad r: covered ‘and was half a dozen lengths or more aherd. This, of course, deciled the heat. Frank trotted very tinely the remainder of the distance, but could not overtake the black, who won by twenty yards in 2.33%. Third Heat.—The odds offered in favor of Lanect were about ore bundred to ten, aud in Ove instance one hun- dred to five that Frank would not take a heat. Frank had ‘he best of the start, and soon took the inside away from Lancet, leading to the quarter pole over an open length in thirty-seven sevonds, and about the samo di tance to the haif in 1:143¢. From there to the three-q ter pole Lancet gradually , but not enongh to shut up the daylight. He made a most beautiful effort up the homestreich to overiake the little sorrel: but before he reached his wheel ke up, and Frank won by a couple of lengths in Fourth Heat.—A great change nad taken place in the minds of tinauciers, and all kiuc's of queer faces were dieamong those who had wagered the long odds on Laueet. Hedging had been the prevailing business for the twenty minutes between heals, and a large number of the prin. cipal betters hardly knew how their books stocd when the horses wore started, Frank, again on the inside, THE TURF, GASURE GRouND ‘ABSOCTATION oe Friday, May 23.—Iurse $10), two miles and srs, g, James I 0 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $23,322,615 06, and the balances year in first hands. transact elude sales of 2,800 bbis. for export, on apd to the trade 350 bbls. ions for er pri bere, and 240 bbis. sous a , delivered here) on private terms. From the quarter to the half Lancet trotted very flvely, and gradually closed up to the side of Frank as he passed the half-mile pole in 1:16. The black then went up a little closer, and they appeared yokod together for the next two hundred yards. Lancet then faltered for a moment, and Frank got clear of him. This, however, was but for a moment. The Diack again made a dash after him, and was soon up witn bim, and, after a fine and gallaat brush, came home winner by a neck, making the heat in 2:33%4. On vo-morrow afternoon Lady Emma, Jilt Lynch and Nimble Dick trot two mile heats over the above track. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ~~ Wepsespay, “May 21-6 P. M. There is no change in the money market to re- port, except that call loans at 3 per cent are becoming more frequent than they were. Three bids fair soon to become the standard rate for money in Wall street. There is no change in bills. The brokers.are hoping for an increased supply of produce bills. The stock market opened this morning with weak feeling, and for some time an impression pre- vailed that there was bad news in town. Sub- sequent developments led to the belief that the decline of the morning was mainly due to a com- bined effort of the bear operators, who seem to have received some aid from the bulls. Nothing is more feared by the latter than a general closing out of the short interest; nothing more desired than a large, healthy short interest well distributed throughout the speculative shares. Hence it is suspected, when the bears showed a tendency to in- crease their line this morning, some of the shrewd- est bulls threw over a few hundred shares of stock to increase the decline, and so tempt the operators for a fall to move boldly. The decline of the morning was equal to 124 in Erie preferred and guaranteed, 1 in Pacific Mail, Illinois Central and Michigan Central, *4 in Rock Island, %% in Erie, % in Hudson River and Toledo, and 3% in Central. Government sixes were 14 lower, and State stocks about 4%. Bonds were no lower. On the contrary, the inquiry seemed as active as ever, especially for the cheaper classes of bonds, which have been to some extent lost sight of on the Stock Exchange for some time past. After the beard the market rallied, and stocks were in demand at a slight advance from the morning prices; but at the second board the bears renewed their attack upon the maik>t with vigor, and @ further decline of % a % per cent en- sued. At the close the market was steady at the decline, the following being the last quotations:—United States 6's, registered, 1881, 103 a 103; do. 6's, coupon, 1881, 103% a 104; do. 1874, 9244 a 94; Indiana 5’s, 82a 83; Tennessee , 585% a %; Virginia 6's, 58 @ 59; North Caro- lina 6's, 71 a 73; Missouri 6’s, 51°4 a 52; Pacific Mail, 113% a %; New York Central, 88% a 5; Erie, 38 a 1%; do. preferred, 6534 a%%; Hudson River, 42%, 0%; Harlem, 1414 a 14; do. preferred, 35 a4; Reading, 45% a 49}4; Michigan Central, 62 a %; Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana, 25% a%; do. guaranteed, 56 a 14; Panama, 131 a 132; Illinois Central, 6094 a %; Galena and Chicago, 71 a %; Cleveland and Toledo, 45% a 4%; Chicago and Rock Island, 62% a 63; Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, 724% a 73; Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, 29% a Illinois Central 7's, 94 a 4%; gold, 103% a ¥, It is hoped that the bill reported to Congress by Mr. Ward, from the Committee on Commerce, establishing a branch mint at the Assay Office in this city, will become a law without further delay. In no other country in the world would people be guilty of the absurdity of requiring all the gold and silver to be sent half a day’s journey by rail to be coined, when the coinage might just as well take place at the place where the bullion is received. New York is the focus of Business on this continent; nearly all the bullion first comes here; it is here refined and cast into bars; but to be cast into coins it has to go to Philadelphia. Since 1854 we have sent from here to the Mint at Philadelphia $113,- 972,118 of gold and silver to be coined, at a cost of $129,905 for express freight. It takes from twen- ty-two to twenty-eight days for the Mint at Phila- delphia to coin bars into pieces and return the lat- ter to the owner here; the depositor loses the in- terest meanwhile. Common sense and sound busi- ness principles long ago dictated the expediency of cemoving the Mint bodily, with all its machinery and workmen, to this city; but, if Philadelphia considers that this would be fatal to her prosperity, surely there can be no objection to our having a branch mint connected with the Assay Office, where citi- nens of New York can have their bullion coined without needless expense or delay.
