OVEB FORTY DEATHS FROM STARVATION IN ONE DIS- TRICT IN IRELAND. In the House of Commons on the 2d of May, Mr. Ma- guire, in rising to call attention tw the fact that several deaths from starvation had occurred recentiy in Irev land, said that the House ielt deepsy:npathy with the peopie of Lancashire, aud he should be glad if the govern- ment would take sume steps to relieve those who in that county were suilering, not from (he dispensations et Providence, but from the evil passions of man. There was now in ireland a state of things which should com- mand the sympathy of every man who had a heart to feel for human distress. Since be bud tast brought 10r- ward this subject his conviction was conlirmed tuat the distress was wide spread, and was certatu to mcresse every day for the next three or four months. * * * The Rev. Mr. Prendergast, parish priest of Newport, in the county of Mayo, said im that district there had been @ complete failure of the food of the people, and that under the pressure of the ferences ‘She government in- tertered, the resnit must be starvation, as no amount of local charity could cope with the distress. Resviutions were agreed to at a meeting of the clergy of the deaucry of bourne, stating thai no description of the distress Of the people could give an adequate idea of the saa re- ult, and that, as ministers of God and daily wituesses of scenes of beartrending misery, they were constrained tu ‘urge the immediate application of effective measures ot relief. The last resolutivn was in these terms:—'That the false representations of government ofticiais, who studiously endeavor to conceal from the gazevf the civilized world the real state of the countr} are equally inhuman and christian, and deser the unqualified censure of ry enlightened man. Whether those expressions were justilied or not, he ‘was convinced that they were the prevailing sentiments of a majority of the Irish people. In the Belfast News he found the report of a meeting of Protestant clergymen who testified to the distress which provaiied there. The Parish priest of Moyculien, im the county of Galway, in tetver, dated the 3uth of April, waid that hunger, starv: tion and death would be the iuhappy } lot of many unless they were relieved. Mr. Murphy, of Bantry, narrated he case of the father of eight chudren, whose wij ‘sand chil- dren were rqfused relief because he would not go with them alo the worshouse, and abandon the hopes of independence which rested upon his cultivation of @ small pilot. The writer added that there were of similar cases in that hood. The honorable gentleman read a list of deaths {rom want and exposure since the 20th of November, 1861, at Ennis, Galway, Atblone, Eunis- kil: nu aud 'oiher places. Hi could go through a much Jongor list of cases, but he believed he had read some- thing like Me cases of deaths from starvation, in more than twenty of which inquests had been held. That was 4 serious state of things. It might be said that Catholic clorgymen were apt to make exaggerated statements, but these — would not have died if they could bave helped it. Surely it was not creditable to the verument that such cases should have to be recorded. imilar cases could have been recorded as ovcurring dor King of Naples, the Duke of Modena or the 9, it would have been said that the govern- ae wag imaiadministe tection to human life. there would be no empioymeat for agriculturists in ire- jand. For two terrible mouths gaunt cee would stare the people in the face. It was the duty of the govern- meut, as the guardian of the lives of the people aud of the prosperity of the country, not to persist in deuying that there waa distress, but to take some active measures to relieve it. No doubt the government would do something for the suilering operatives in Lancashire.
