NEWS FROM. GEN. MITCHEL’S DIVISION Wasnicton, May 16, 1962. The following has been received at the War Depart- ment:— Heapgvarrers, Tarp Divison, Cam Taytor, Hesreviig, Ah., May 15, 1862. } Bon. E. M. Sranron, Secretary of War: At six P.M. on the 13th inst., Gen. Nogley’s expedition from Pulaski, supported by Col. Little's expedition from Athens, entered Rogersvilie, driving the enemy acroce ‘the Tennessee and destroying a portiom of tho ferry Doats. Having learned of tho approach of Col. Little's forces, the enemy succeeded im removing their artiliory, Daggage and stores before the arrival of Gen. Negley. 1 expected an obstinate defence at the passage of the Eik river, and accompanied Col. Little in person, but without crossing. The enemy, as usual, fled at our ap. Proach. Iordered yesterday an expedition te mc" Promptly from Rogersville to seize the bridge across Shad creek and the ferry below the mouth of the same stream. This auty has been promptly executed, and the Ferry and bridge are ours. r No more troops will enter from that region, and we bévé now upon this side of the river twelve or fifteen hundred cavalry of the enemy, in bands of throo o@our undred, whom we will endeavor to hunt down, destroy or capture, The gunboat which I-have extemporized will de ready for service to-day, and I will soon be able to pay my respects to the enemy on the eastern side of the region under my command. U. M. MITCHEL, Major General. THE RECENT T SKIRMISH NEAR CORINTH Aa Our army Correspondence. Camp Noumeer Tunez, Near Cont, Miss., May 9, 1862. List of Killed and Woundéd—the Rebels Greatly Ou! number Pepe's Command—The Union Foree in the Engyencnt—A Fine Cavalry Charge—The Force of the Rebel Attack—The Reason why the Union Troops Were Not Better Supported—G-neral Pope Ordered ‘' Not to Bring om a General Bngagement’’—2he Severity of the Rebel Firing—Farming‘on Again in Our Possession, dc. ‘This morning at daybreak skirmishing commenced be- twoen the Union and rebel pickets, which continued @aring some hours, the federais gradually retiring in ‘the face of a greatly superior force. In this manner ‘the enemy took possession,*for the second or third time, of the town of Farmington, and our own troops drew op on one of their previously estanlished lines and awaited reinforcements. These arrived in due time, and consisted of a part of the First division of Major Genera) Pope’s Army of the Mirsissippi, under command of Brigadier Goneral E. A Paine, comprising tho Forty- second, Twenty-seveuth, Fifty-first and Twenty-secoud Fegimentsot I!linois Volunteers, being the First brigade, commanded by General John M. Palmer. ‘The First brigade of Goneral Stanley's division, com, manded by Acting Brigadier Genoral Loomis, bore the largest share of the brunt of the battle. This bri- gade embraces the Twenty-sixth and Forty-seventh 111i- mois, the Eighth Wisconsin and the Eleventh Missouri, ‘end is properly uoder the charge of Brigadier General J. B. Plummer, who has been for some days seriously ill, ‘and who, on this occasion, was unable to aypear in the field. The cavairy force was made up of the Second Towa Volunteers, Lieutenant Colonel Hatch commanding, ‘and companies B, C and D, of the Fourth regulars, led by Lieutenant Gordon. Tho artillery engaged in tho fight ‘were Heseock’s and Totten’s batteries, the latter com- manded by Captain Maurice, the whole force amounting to but ten pieces. At about eleven o'clock the rebe, Datteries, strongly supported, bad approached sufficient- Jy near our lines to open fro upon them, which they (id ‘with round shot and shell at & distance of somewhat ies ‘than a thousand yards, This fire broke up our infantry Dadiy, and forced them to retreit in not rery good order. The batteries of Hescock and Maurice replied smartly, and checked the enemy's advance; bat the Dindrance was only temporary. Our artillery, not Being supported, was compelled to form @ new Ving considerably in the rear of the one Previously occupied by them. At this time the fighting ‘was between the entire force of the enemy and Loomis’ Drigade on our side; and hore the groatest lows was # Yaived, our infantry being subject! to a heavy cross fire of musketry, with well served artillery playing upon whom directly in front ; and, to their praise be it spoken, abe brigade stood and returned the fire, General Paine ‘at once saw that this state of aMairs could not long con finue, and, in order to withdraw his {nfaniry i: Kind of shape, he orterod a cavairy chargo to be ‘upon the enemy, with @ view lochock their fir a @vents, to divert it. Haviag summoned Lieutenant Gor don, he directed him to charge up @ bill, through @ road ‘on the eft, with his three companies of regular carairy, ‘and to send the Towa Second up the sume bill by another oad leading to the right, This charge was most gallantiy made by both be pra ny ind effected the desired result be object gained paid its great cost. In ag king Qbis charge the caper advanced steadily up the rod swhich thoy had been told to take, and the fr st th © @hey met was one of oar infantry regiments with atacked arms. Lieut. Gordon asked its coione) tf he could not r move someof bis muskets, in order to allow a @hrough them for his cavairy, He replied 1 would not do it by any means, #0 the Lieutenant was ob- Rees aide or, Aiged to ride around the pimont ghee Josing much “valuable time. Hi ‘himself, however, in Grout of arebel battery, ry, and a" was ness that he heard ate commanrer give order to-load with shrapnel, whoreupon he concluded it was about time to pl u v4 int and advance to (he loft. This mowement broug! is command directly in ‘he ‘ace of another battery ptain of which Was distinotly heard 0 ater he Serith grape—load|” This position of }@ was immedi. antoned, and the fire of boph t batteries was ‘almost ineffectual by there timely movements, Someeens owe: ayre Wp ike 4h bend road l aed advanced by fours, and galloped to within fifty yards of auother rebel battery, aud were tho-@ a (Ourse brousht to a stand by its fire and that of seven thousand infantry which was posted om either side of it. No Alternative except retreat waa loft, and the regiment scattered through the mg timber, each mon for Dimself, omtil they rattied, which they did on reaching the fet »ieve of ground that would admit of it. This 1eg) Moat Sulfered the greatest Joes of all that have been to-’ay ohvaged, and exhibited as much valor ag apy over van show, vhvoh ta abundantly proven by the explit» set men tioned, and the amount of neton Paneminp ite which they have au cossiuily performed during the progress of Gen. Pope's army froin the Tennessee river to lis; reseat encampment. ‘The retreat of some of the regiments which received the first onsiaught o° the enemy's thonsands product naturally enoagh, a bad effect on that portion of ou which did stand, even when the order fora fina! retreat was given. It i# pleasant, however, to record that in those regiments there were some officers and iors who reformed their lines in good style wheneve found any stable regiment around which they eo.ld rally. ‘A case of this sort was particularly noticed, Captain Sheuley was in command of a company, and wien be saw the turn matters were taking, he reformed his mon, and adjared them by ail they held good and sacred not to desert the cause they had sworn e. defend, but to show themselves men worthy tlag they had followed. The Captain's exhortations Lee seer his company formed in good order on the right of another regiment and remained with them during tho continuanee of the skirmish. ‘This was (he Twenty- a Iifinois, commanded, on this occasion, by Lieut. Cul. ©. L. Tinkham. It did its work steadily, and wih a degres of nerve and coolness which characterize ail brave mon in the presence of dangor, and which to-day was attributed, ina great measure, to the presence of mind and bravory of their leader. Colonel Tinkham had his right hand disabied by a shell, pee only left the fleid after the close of the fight and at the h of his | egt- ment, The Forty seventh Illinois and the Fighth Wi consin, of the same brigade, wore side by side with this regiment, and they mutually. sustained each other through many trying scenes. The Eleventh Missouri hat beeo posted sume distance to the left, from which peint it kept up @ galling fire upon the a, right, often checking their atvyance when they hoped to sur. round our little force and swallow up the Tale of it, and although it was not exposed as much as other recent did as good work and is ontitied to as much credit as on the field. During the entire ent the artillery did great execution, and w served in splendid style, We lost one gun, how- ever, which may be considered as merely a temporary bean, Dasmoch as a strong effort will be made to recover it with interest. Asnong the many noteworthy instasces of moral a8 weil us physical bravery shown darin; ihe course of this day's events, it is fitting to mention tho conduct of Dr. Thornhill, of Colonel Loomis’ brigade, and his assistant, whose name I have ‘unfortunately forgot- ten. Hoth these gentiemen remained on the field after the withdrawal of the Union forces, and gave what assist- anee they could render to the few wounded soldiers who had not been removed, and in one instance brought tito camp in their arms a poor joy private of the Minois Twenty -sixth, who but for this aid would soon have been added to the pumber of those who shall fight no more. Such noble deeds seem to me worthy of emulation, aud I hove they will become in time strictly professional. ‘The order given to General Pope by General Halleck, in veference to the course the former should pursue w! ath re,ard to handling this important wing of the Army of the ‘Tennessee, was to station his pickets 1m some strength at certain points, and to hold them if ), but in no case to bring on a general int, but rather to retire and induce the enemy to » thereby giving an oppor- tunity to divisions on our right'to place themselves in the rear of the attacking force and eerng them from falling ack upon their main army at Corinth. "The enemy, however, appeared in such force that it was necessary to resist bim to tho utmoet in order to preserve any degree of system in tho retreat, there being but one road, and tbat running for nearly @ mile over @ cense swamp, by =: a moron of our forces could be effec ho rebels was poured upon us like water nano. being concen- ated from a large periphery upon a very ‘small centre. Still they declined to fellow up See en may have thought they had gained, but with- out loss of time to their intrenchmets at Corinth, and Low Farmington s again oceupied by tational troops. ‘A deserter who came in soon after the conclusion of the skirmish states that in his opinion the confoderates employed nearly one-half their foroe in this that Generals Price, Van Dorn and Hardee were in cony mand. There is great reason to believe this statement to be true, and it is certainly known from other sources of information that over twenty thousand rebels were 0) ed to us. "Bec find complete liet of the killed, Below you wil wounded and missing, of the forces engaged on federal side.
