i Great Commotion Among the Pious and Honest Lawyers of New York—A Black Sheep Discovered—Purity of the New York Bar in Danger—Oh! Oh! Oh! MR, EDWIN JAMES AND HIS ADMISSION TO THE BAR OF NEW YORK. No. 293 Broanway, New Yous, Feb. 15, 1802. ‘To the candor and impartially of my brethren of the bar, and to the feeling of the American poople—proy: Dially intolorant of persecution—I submit without com- ment the following correspondence, 1 beg ouly atten- tion to the dates of the ovents as they occurred, the ‘in- exorable logic”’ of which will lead them to a just covclu- sion more irresistibly than any arguments I could ad- Guce. In May and June, 1861, the proceediags alluded to oc” curred in England, In July and August, 1861, they were publicly known and commented on in the Auglish legal journa's. Since January and February, the kindness of a few frionda to me, a stranger amiongst them, has afforded me the opporwunity of commencing my professional career; and On the 13: May, 1862,a gentleman, without notice to meof any such intention, submitted to the Court pa; es atiocting my eharacter and my position at the Bar, the contents and purport of which I am up to this moment kopt in ignorance. EDWIN JAMES. CORRESPONDENCE. LETTER FROM MR. EDMONDS TO MR. EDWIN JAMES, No. 71 Inving Prace, Feb. 14, 1862. Sin—I was waited upon yesterday by @ member of our bar, whocalled my attention to the London Jurist f July 27, August 17 and November 23 last me that upon those publications it was intended tom: the Court to revoke your license, and I was thus notified, Because the document on which I bad moved for your admission, your patent, namely, as Queen's Counsel, was an invalid iustrument, at tho time I had presented it to the Court as valid. I know not how this may be, nor how far the proceod- ings referred to in tlose publications annulled your patent; and ail that I can do is simply to say to the Court that I was nol aware of those iyeesoatag an fo allord you the opportunity of you may desire. I remain, Epwin James, Esq. eb. 14, receizt« ae letter this morning, in which you state “ihit you were waited upon yesterday bya member of your bar, who cal your attention to the London Jurist for July 27, August 17 and November 23 last, and apprisod you that upon those Publications it was intended to move the Court to revoke my license because tho document ou which you bad moved for my admission—namely, my patent as Queen's Counsel—was an invalid instrument af the time I prasent- edit.” In the first place I beg of you, as an act of justicoto myself, to furnish me without delay with the name ot tho individual who thus waited uyon you. Your own feelings as a gentleman will prompt you to do this, and will not, I believe, induce you to extend any she.ter to anonymous: slander. Tam eutitied to demand this of you, that the individual, whoaver he may be, may be responsible to me for any statement he has made, or any conrse of ac. tion be may think proper to adopt. 4s you did me the honor to propose me as a member of the New York bar, you areentitied to an explanation of tho facts to which your letter alludes. On the 5th of November last I placed in your bands my patent as Quean’s Couvsel, which was granted me by the Lord Chancellor; that patent was in force, was then valid, is valid now, and bas never been either canc:tied or revoked. Before my application to become a member of the New York bar—viz., about tha3d of Septembar jJast—I addressed a letter irom this country to the Lord Chancellor of England, who has the sole power, as the pan oye of the Queen, to revoke or cance! »} patents, and requested his lordship, in the ntof any seplication being made to him upon the subject, to allow the opportunity of being heard by my friends in England, during my absence, against any such pro- » and stativg that I appealed to him against = relentiers persecution prompted by political jealousy ional rivalry to which I had been subj-cted; requested my friends to call upon the Lord Chan: came with this letier. They didso. And ia November last [ received a letter from his lordship's secretary, written by authority of his lordship, stating that no ap: plication had been made by any person for the revoca- cation or cancellation of my ;atent, aud that I should be heard upon the subject before his lordship would grant any such application. I wrote aguia to England in the latter part ef November, to inquire whether avy stups had been takenor any application made to the Lord Chan- collor upon the same subject. I rece'ved a reply, stating that no appliontion of any kine had been made, nor was it probable that there would be. ‘The publications of the Loudon Jwrist for July 27, An- = 17 and November 23, to which your letter refers, I We Hot seen, nor do I care to see them. It is very pro- bable they contain attacks upon ine during my absence, prompted by the, same motives which have induced many of the same character; but your own sopse «f what is due to candor and fair dealing would, I should Ihave theaght, have :nduced you to pay Ii. tle’ attention to stat-menis made as far back as July and August iast. The Su Court of this State did me the honor toadmit meas a member of the bar on your motion, ou the Sth of November last. It was then inti- mated to me that-gome individuals. whose names | coult wever ascertain, expressed an intention to enter some protest against my admission. Under the advice of friends hee whom | consulted, 1 waited for a period of three weeks before I took the oath and signed the roll of counsellors, and thus completed my right to practice. As I could never ascertain the name of any person who bad given this intimaiion, I could only adopt the course which I did, namely—by suggesting, through a friend, that I was prepared to meet any, such opposition, and deal with every such protest, should any be made: and we to complete my right to admission with this ect. I beg that you will read this letter to the Court if the subject of my admission be aliuded to, and I hold myself at liberty to give it any publicity which my friends may advise or my professional intereais may require. Lam, sir, yours obediently, EDWIN JAMES. dod. W. Epmoxps, Esq. Frupay Evaxine, Feb. 14, 1862.
