THE EXPECTED ATTACK UPON MOBILE. = | ""=™™=*™ Arrival of the Advance of Farragut’s Fleet Of Fort Morgan. ae ‘The Scene ofthe Second Grand Movementor Commodore Farragut’s Eixpedition. Description of the Forts and Their Strength. Hydrographical and Topographical Map of the Vicinity, Sketch of Mobile—Its Railway and Water Approaches, Have the Rebels Any Rams in Mobile Harbor? &., ke. &. The reported arrival of Porter’s mortar flotilla as the advance of Farragut’s expedition off Fort Morgan and the vicinity of Horm Island at last brings this im- portant part of the United States more prominently before our notice, The news has been received from rebel sources, but latterly such news has generally been found correct when our mails arrive, a¢ least as far as regards our attacks, although we generally find their Statements of our troops being repulsed somewhat exaggerated, We present our readers to-day with @ full sketch of the fortifications, water and railroad approaches, &c., of the city of Mobile, and it will, doubt. During the year 1700, a roving Frenchman name@ Bienviilc, attracted by the magnificent proportions of what is now known as Mobile, landed with a few follow+ ers, made a settlement ard built a fort, probably upon the present site of Fort Morgan. The exccoding salubrity of the climate, together with a series of fortunate circumstances, prospered the little settlement, the rapid growth of which, when ceded to Eng'and in 1763, made it a place of some importance eve at that early period. In 1780 it was again ceded, thie timo by England to Spain, and in 1817 the city of Mobile was incorporated, ‘The city is built upon a plateau elevated some fiftees feet. above high water mark, thirty miles from the mouth of Mobile Day, the entrance to thie bay being protected by Forts Morgan and Gaines. Fort Morgan was known as Fort Boyer during the war of 1812, whon the gallant Major Lawrence defended it successfully against repeated attacks both by land an@ sea. The fort since them has been rebails and strength> ened, and was but a short time. since one of the most picturesque and interesting of our seacoast defences. I) shape it is a pentagon trace, built upon regular angles, protected on the sea front by a strong water battery of masonry and turf, The greater number of the guns of ‘tho fort are columbiads of heavy calibre, With an occa- sional rifle upon a salient. A bomb-proof citadel im the centre of the fort, pierced for musketry, affords a secure retreat during a bombardment, as well ag a dernier resor® from a successful storming party. The fort and water” battery, with their full a:mament, mount forty-five guna, many of which are protected by the mantelet that waa so much used during the Crimean war, and were brought from shat place by Colonel Hardee, which personage haa made excelicnt use of the advantages of his visit in the rofltting and strengthening of Fort Morgan, where he eeprss . 4433343 Pre SL} DESL LI Pt if 4 STL TA 44. 13555 1 me 2 SITUATIONS WANTED—FEMALES, SITUATIONS WANTED—FEMALUS.
