Commercial paper is extremely scarce. There isan @ctive business in Treasury notes (seven-thirties), which are fiuctuating between 34a 4 per cent pre mium. In foreign exchange the business done has Deen light. Bankers are holding at 114, which the pablic seem, as yet, rather unwilling to give. Gold Bose to-day to 103%, closing at 10334 bid. The ‘@zy goods import for the week is small, only $679,- 826 worth of goods having been entered, against 9890,040 same week last year, and $1,217,149 mame week of 1860. The dry goods imports for the year to date fall about $5,500,000 short of ‘those of the corresponding period of last year. ‘There was more animation in the stock market to-day than yesterday, and prices were generally ‘Detter, though the volume of business transacted ‘was considerably less than that of the early days @f this week. The market seems to be pausing be~ fore a fresh advance. The most buoyant stock of fhe day was Hudson River, which advanced 24 per cent, closing 4414 bid—an advance of about 8 per cent in four or five days, and so rapid as to Justify apprehensions of a reaction. Government sixes (coupons) rose 1 per cent, Tennessees 5%, Missouris 5{, Central %, Erie 4%, preferred 34, Michigan Central 14, Galena %, Toledo %, Rock Island %{. The exception to the market ‘was Pacific Mail, which closed at @ decline of 1 per cent. T. W. Kennard, Esq., of London, Eng- Yand, is the engineer of the road. He has already purchased all the rolling stock, made arrangements for employing 6,000 men, and expects that by the Ast of October next, the line will be completed to Akron, Ohio, when the Erie Railway Company, with its Cleveland and Pittsburg and Mahoning eonnection, will have a through line, with the six foot gauge, from Cleveland, Ohio, to the long dock @t Hoboken. The principal parties interested in the enterprise are the Duke Rianzares and the ‘anker Solanearea, of Madrid; Sir Morton Pets, M.P.; Mr. Edward Betts and the Kennards, of Lendon; Mr. James McHeary, of Liverpool, and ‘Mesars. Samuel Hallett & Co., of New York. The Atlantic and Great Western Railway bonds, which are so little known in our market, will naturally ‘take rank with the first and second mortgages of ‘the Erie Railway, which are held at a premium, while, under good management, the stock may be worth as much as the stock of the New York Cen- tral or the Lake Shore road. The Sub-Treasurer received more applications to-day for the new six per cent bonds from holders @f legal tender currency, The conversion of the eurrency bids fair to be rapid. The following was the business of the office to-day: — 91,979 80 The exchang morning were $26,282,552 75, and the balances $1,467,988 33. Loss of Life at Sea, &e, From ® record kept by I. B. Upton, 3ecretary of the Ame- ricam Shipmasters’ Association, we have the following table of loss of life by easualites at sea. There is good reason to believe that in the absence of any regulations requiring» systematic report'of lives lost at sea or wrecks, many cases are never reported. The loss of over one thousand lives a year seems to justify @ more verect record than the mere mention in the reports of arrivals that ‘on the —— day of a seaman fell from aloft and was lost.” ‘The loss of life on missing vessels is very large for the last four months, as it includes many grain laden vessels, of which thirty-five were lost in January and February, which had sailed from the port of New York. The gale of February 24 caused large loss of tife to Glou- cester ishing vessels off Georges Bank. On the 7th of March a sovere gale was experienced in the vicinity of Bermuda, pd on the 9th a gale was marked by the loss of thé Ocean Monarch, and subsequently the Charter Oak.
