They could be bappy and undisturbed, nobody from the commonest foldier up, showing the least desire to offend or annoy any one. One of the latest im- Provements is the commencement of the rebuilding of ‘the railroad bridge that the rebels so uselessly and wan- tonly destroyed, The proper parties have taken hold of 36, and we shall soon have a complete railroad communi- cation from Beaufort to Goldsborough, as that place must, im courne of time, fall into A, nands. 1 visited the chief hospital here yesterday to see how our brave fellows were getting on, and am happy to have it in my power to say that, owing to the kind attention ‘Shey aro receiving from the surgeons and nurses, these buildings will s00n be empty, The men are in the Dest of spirits, and are supplied with everything that they can desire, with the exception of the presence of (heir friends and relations, Dr. Page, the Sanitary In" @pector, has opened a very neat little reading room in he town for the use of those who are convalescent. It 4g well stocked and well patronised. ‘The troops have been blesecd with the presence of a umber of paymasters, and the consequence is that the office of Adams’ Express Company has been crowded by the men, al) anxious to send home to their families such portions of their pay as they could spare. Many of them Jeft themselves but a few cents, in their @enire to send assistance to the loved ones at home, Buch generosity must mect its reward, whether in this sphere erin the next, To give an idea of its extent, I may state that the express company sent home by the tant mail 5,300 money parcels, the total amount contained im them boing nearly $450,000. These figures speak wel} ‘for the men, and show that their money is not wasted “by the way. Weome of the people of this town were to suddenly Yeturn now, I think they would be rather surprised at the business look that the town has assumed since they Jeft it, Such a number of fine vessels, and such a quan. ‘tity of stores, &c., never before greeted their eyes, al- ‘though Newbern was always quite.a business place. Nothing of importance has been heard from Beaufort or Fort Macon ; but we expect almost hourly to hear that ‘the ball bas opened, and that Fort Macon is ours. Neweran, April 15, 1862. A Private of the Toenty-fifth Massachusetts Regiment Drum- med Out for Cowardice—Capture of Bighty Rebels a Elisabeth City, dc. , dc. In consequence of a delay in the mai), ] am enabled to add afew more interesting facts to my letter of the 14th. A circumstance occurred here yesterday morning, Perhaps the most impressive in a smal] way that the people hereabouts have ever witnessed, and I trust that ‘they may never have an opportunity again of seeing such a sight except in their own army, where there is ample scope for such things. Patrick Cronan, a private of the Twenty-fifth Massachusetts regiment, was drum. med out of the United States service. The following are (he details of the affair :—At the time of the landing of the troops at Slocum’s creek, this Cronan hid himself, ‘and was not seen for many daysafter. He had no ex use to offer, and he was court martialled for cowardice. At the trial be was found guilty and sentenced to be con- fined in jail fora period, and then to be drummed out ef the service. The latter part of the sentence was executed yesterday morning. The regiment ‘was drawn up in front of the Provost Marshal’s office, end Cronan, with his head closely shaven, was marched ‘sut, and his sentence read to him. He was then marched up and down the lines, with a large placard attached to his back, on which, in large letters, was displayed the ‘word “Coward.’? Two drummers preceded him, and at either side of him were two of his late comrades, with , arms reversed, while, bringing up the rear, were twe more, with bayonets charged—the whole forming a pic- ture that fed you with pity and at the same time Ratredof the man. He was marched through the princi- | pal streets, followed Dy an immense crowd of spectators, oam@then taken back to jail. He besalways been a very bed character, and prided himself on hia quarreleome pre- | penaities, but bad not the courage fave a battle. His Aerribis Giagrace did not appear to.oppress him in the ‘Weast. Such a thing as this must have a geod effect upon She citizens, and explain why they are defeated upon avery side, when they see the way we treat cowards in the United States service. We are continually having small.expeditions starting from here on secret service, of which, of course,! can say but little; but we had one that is now past, and therecan be no possible harm in relating it, taking into considera- tion its signal success. The party Jeft Roanoke Island and proceeded to Elizabeth City, with a force of Ove hun- dred men, consisting of twe companies of the Hawkins ‘Zouaves and three of theSixth New Hampshire regiment. ‘They landed, and had it not been for an accident would have taken a large number ef rebel soldiers prisoners; Dut as it was they captured some eighty-four, and Drought them away. Were the towns worth holding it ‘would be very easy for our people to do so; but, as they gay in your city, ‘it would not pay.” Although we are somewhat wound up in ourselves out ‘im this region, we still watch with the greatest interest ‘the doings of the division; and I need scarcely say that the late glorious victories have had this one effect: to make us still more anxious to add fresb laurels to those ‘we have already won. Our Beaufort Correspondence. Bravyorr, N.C., April 13, 1862. Desertions trom Fort Macon—Rumor of the Desertion of Colonel White—His Illness and Disaffection of the Rebels Under His Command—Brisk Engagement of the Fifth Bhede Island Regiment and one of our Blockading Vessel® with the Redele—Letter Found on a Rebel, de. On Wednesday last it was reported throughout this vi- cinity that Colone) White, the eommanding officer of Fert Macon, had attempted to desert from the fort, but was Bred upon and brought back byhis owns men. The rumor ad ite origin in some fring which twas heard near the ‘walle of the fort; but it of course obtains no credence. On the following (Thuraday) nights lieutenant and eight men deserted from the fort, and, coming within our Hines, gave themselves upas prisoners. They had a hear ing before General Parke, and stated that Colonel Whit- (who, by the way, is the Magruder of North Carolina) had been taken down il] with one of his usual fits, and the garrison was pow 1n charge of the second officer in com- mand (one of the captains). Considerable disaffection ex- isted, and a great number of the men were desirous of having the fort surrendered. To increase tis feeling, & letter was sent within the rebel lines next morning, reiterating in a fow words the sentiments contained in General Burn" side’s proclamation te the people of North Carolina, ‘viz:—That she Union forces had not eome to destroy life, ‘anless necessary, or pillage or waste property, but to restore the authority of the federal government in all revolted territory. The letter contained, besides, an expression of @ desire to attain this end with as little Dicodshed as possible. It was observed to be carried off by the rebels, and no doubt it has worked a beneficial effect by this time. ‘The position of affairs in the immediate vicinity of Fort Macon invests this letter with some importance. The garrison cannot complain of any unfair conduct. Their subjection is merely @ matter of time; though, should i+ bo necessary, our gallant boys could carry the. fort by storm atany time. But such an achievement would in- volve bloodshed and a serious lone of life—a thing which it is the policy of all humane generals to avoid if possible: Matters are now rapidly approaching a crisis. On Fri- day Captain Wheeler, with ® @etachment of the Fifth Rhode Island regiment, and under the supervision of General Parke and staff, and Capt, Williamson, of Gen, Burnside’s staff, set Out to drive in the rebel pickets, preparatory to the establishment of the hostile lines dur. ing the approaching siege. A signal wan made to one of the Diockading vessels to open fire abead, and in a sbort time her shells were bursting among the rebels in a most lively manner. Then our forces advanced, and a rather beisk skirmish ensued. From sand bill to eand nil, from busb to bush, our soldiers drove and pursued the Oying rebels, until they were within short distance of the fort, which, in the meantime, had opened wrth shell, and kept the sand flying ip clouds around them. Singular to relate, no one was injured on our side, and no traces of biood would indicate that the rebels had been moro us fortunate. This little incident is but the prelude to the drama which is soon tocommence here, Tho actors have taken their places, and when the munie of the first bom® rings up the curtain, then will begin the tragedy. Lot us hope that the obstinacy of the rebels will not make ita 100 bloody one, Isend you the following letter, whick was found upon the person of a rebel soldier mado prisoner by our picke' between here and Newbern — Fort MAcos N.C, March 24, 1862 My Drar Many—With great pleasure | sot myself down this morning For the Last tam afeard. 1 think 1 shatl take a shot Trip to the North Bofore I sea you; But I hope 1 shall sure Return to my Dear Howe Mary let mo stay Long or Short Dont Forget your Dear Joseph whoe Loves you as he Loves his own hart Mary the yankee aro at More head on Caraline City thicker than Fiddlers fo hell But we are the Poys can ten to thear Cav Will sune no What Will Become of ue our Liveing hard as, hell Nothing to yoat But old hors an vlour Bread But Wo Can stan it fora While the yaukeo are Pickets of the Enemy—Names of the Pickets of the Ninth New Jersey Regiment Captured by the Rebels, dc,, de. Another skirmish took place on Saturday, between the Pickets of the enemy anda reconnoitering party of the Eighth Connecticut. The rebels were driven back, but ‘not without loss on our side. Two of our men were wounded. Ove of them was Captain Sheffield, Eighth Connecticut, who was dangerously wounded by a mus- ket ball, which passed through bis body. In a previous letter I mentioned that some rebel caval” ry had made a dasb upon and made prisoners of a picket of the Ninth Now Jersey regiment. C., April 15, 1862. ‘The Investuwent of Fort Macon—Armament of the Fort—The Rebel Lookout, de. ‘The investment of Fort Macon still goes on, and be- yond a little skirmishing and picket firing there is nothing new to write about. In a previous letter I stated that the armament of the fort consisted in part of two ten-inch columbiads; but in action one only will be available. The rebels fired the other a few days since,} but it was dismounted by its ‘own recoil. They remounted it upon the carriage, but it again went over, and they have abandoned it. It now ies with its muzzle pointed skyward. Our pickets have advanced to within three-quarters ef mile of the fort. The dividing lineis a small ereck, known as Fishing creek, and the pickets of both sides are frequently within hailing distance. The rebels oeca- sionally come within musket range, and ery out, ‘Come on, you damped Yankees; come on and we’ll flog you.’, Buta volley or two sends them back again out of range. Our men are strongly posted among the bills, and the rebels exhibit signs of great indignation at the prox imity, if we may judge from the frequent discharges of shell at the unoffending sand banks. These missiles have proved harmless #0 far, though the escapes of our pickets in many cases have been almost hair breadth, A rebel in the fort keeps = constant jook-out in the crosstrees of the flagstaff, and, from his elevated posi” tion, indicates the position of our men and directs the shots. His dark form upon the narrow pole is plainly discernible, and, though the range is great, some of the soldiers have amused themselves with ‘drawing bead ‘upon him.” Yesterday morning quite @ brisk skirmish occurred be- tween the rebele and the pickets of the Eighth Connecti- cut, The former came boldly across the creek, and the fort fired a few shell, which temporarily drove our men from cover, when the rebels fired a volley which inflicted alight flesh wounds upon three of the picket. ‘The fire was returned, and with our glasses we observed the rebels carrying several wounded back to the fort. Lieutenant Marsh, of the signal corps, haa established a station upon our advanced Jine, where bis ‘cootness tn conveying messages across the Sound has alreaty madd: ‘Mite services been 80 necessary Or more useful than here- ‘Séations have been located so that easy comniuwfication is had between Gevera! [Telegram to the Richmond Dispatch.} Wruauneron, April 18, 1862. A private letter, dated 17th inst., says that the enemy (Union forces) attacked Fort Macon last /, and have been fighting two days. Colonel White sent out a part of his men on the beach, and found three hundred ‘Yankees. They killed fifteen of our men. We then re- treated to the fort, and Colonel White fired canister at the enemy, killing a large number. The enemy have erected a battery two miles from the fort, on the beach, and bave planted mortars and large sized siege guns. Eleven large ships are now outside the barbor. The enemy have sent to Newbern for gunboats to operate in the Sound. They have been committing every imagina- ble outrage in Carteret and Onslow counties. The fort bad not been taken on Wednesday. [From the Richmond Dispatch, April 19.) From the North Carolina coast we have intelligence of the enemy’s attack upon Fort Macon, and of the gallant resistance of our troops up to Wednesday evening. It is supposed that our forces may be able to hold the fort agains the assaults of the invaders. We have also a telegram in relation to a skirmish near the city of Savannah, in which the enemy were repulsed with some loss. We refer the reader to ine telegraphic bead for the latest news up to twelve o'clock last night. THE NAVY, Gatxns.—The iron-clad sloop-of-war Galena was put into commission yesterday afternoon, in presence of a large number of spectators. She carries & picked crew, selected from the crews of the Cumberland, Congress and Reanoke, and her officers are all young, active and intelliggnt. Captain Meade, the indefatigable commander of the receiving ship North Carolina, did everything in hie power to put a crack crew on the Galena, and we venture to say that no man-of-war ever left this port with a braver or more able bodied set of fellows than the blue jackets sent on board the Galena yesterday. It was thought that this vessel would not be ready befor® Wedne@day or Thursday; but Commander Taylor has burried up the work with euch energy that there i, every probabiifty she will sail today.
