Money is in fair demand at 6 a7 per cent; the Certificates of indebtedness have made their ap- pearance in the market and are operating as ab- sorbents. They are very readily taken at bank and atthe private banking houses at 3a2per cent discount. Foreign exchange is firmer to-day. Bankers ask 112, and some leading houses refuse to sell at that rate. The supply of commercial bills is small. Gold is also firmer to-day; it was in request at 10114 at the morning board, and sold at 101% on time. Ope- rators place great reliance upon the experience of : @he past with regard to the movement of gold. It appears that there never was an instance of large Tsu08 of paper money by government without an appreciation of the precious metal. The prevail- ing opinion among the members of the Stock Ex- ehange is that gold must again advance to 405 per cent, though whether it will not then react seems less generally understood. At the present rate of exchange there is a profit on the export of gold to Europe. The stock market opened with strength this morning; the commission brokers lad some fresh orders on the strength of the news from the West. In the course of the morning intelligence was re- ceived of the capture of Newbern, N. C., and this atill further stimulated purchases. Government sixes again touched 94, but at this price they were fully supplied by the banks, and a decline ensued. They closed, however, at an advance of 4 per cent on yesterday's price. The fives of 1874, which are scarce, rose 134 per cent, and are now within 6 per cent of the sixes, In the afternoon the bears derived courage from the non-receipt of intelligence confirming the capture of Island No. 10, and some capital was also made out of the report of the Chamber of Commerce on the subject of the harbor defences. State stocks ‘were sold down 4 a % per cent, and Toledo and Rock Island were depressed 4. The impression prevails that the bears are getting cut quite alivo in these two stocks. If so,a new upward move- ment would have @ substantial basis to rest upon. ‘The other railway shares were all better to-day. At the close Erie old had advanced %, Erie pre- ferred 4, Hudson River %4, Harlem preferred 1, Reading 4%, Michigan Central 24s guaranteed x%, Panama i and Tilinois Central 4. The most active stocks of the day are the two Eries, both of which have risen in favor since the appearance of Mr. Marsh's report. The large difference between ‘them in price leads speculators to give the prefe- fence at present to the common stock, which has risen much less than the preferred, and whose holders will of course control the property. The market was steady at the close, the following be- fog the last quotations:—United States 6's, regis- tered, 1881, 93% a %; do. 6's coupon, 1841, 93% a 94; do. 5's, coupon, 1874, 8744 a 88; Indi- ana 5's, 73% & 79; Virginia 6's, —a 61%; Ten- neasee 6%, 60% 8 %; North Carolina 6's, 69 a 70; Missouri 6's, 53% a 1%; Pacitic Mail, 95% 4 96; Now York Central, 83), a %; Erie, 3744 a 4; do. preferred, 624%, 5; Hudson River, 36% 87; Har- lem, 13 a 4; do. proferrod, 32a 4; Reading, 42% 4 43; Michigan Central, 574 © %; Michigan South, ern and Northern Indiana, 24a 44; do. guaran. teod, 49.4%; Panama, 121.1%; Illinois Contral, 66% a 14; Galena and Chicago, 69% a 70; Cleveland and Toledo, 46% a %; Chicago and Rock Island, 56% 4%; Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, 64 a NEW YORK HERALD, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1862.—TrRIPLKE SHEET. 64; Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, 25% %; Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, 111 a %4; New York Central 7’s of 1876, 102 10374; Erie third bonds, 92 a 93%; Michiran Central 8's, first mortgage, 103% a 104; Ilinois Central bonds, 7’s, 94. 95; gold, 10124. After the second board there was a large at tendance in the outside room, and some 1,200 a 1,400 shares of Michigan Southern changed hands at24a3¢. There was no other change of conse- quence, The following is a comparative statement of the exports (exclusive of specie) from New York to foreign ports for the week ending March 18, and since January 1:— For the week 380, tens 2, i430 orl Previously reported... $i oe sas aerrmoae2 25 25,005,496 Since January 1...$17,089,024 28,061,411 28,049,407 The difference between the export of last week and that of the corresponding week of last year is very slight, but, such as itis, itis infavor of last year. However, in the course of a few days in- ternal navigation “will be opened, and we shall again begin to increase our shipments of produce to the other side. It is plain from the letters from Europe that they will’ want every bushel of grain-we can send them. We.notice,. among the exports of last week, a shipment of cot-" ton to Liverpool, and also some shipments of sugar and coffee to Europe. The non-action of Congres®. on the Tax and Tariff bills is causing a good deal of embarrassment to merchants, the prevailing opinion being at present that no further duty will be levied on tea, sugar or coffee. The committee appointed by the Chamber of Commerce to visit Washington, to consult with members of the government respecting the harbor defences, have returned, and report that gov- ernment recommends the capitalists of the cities of New York, Philadelphia and Boston to provide for their own defence by the construction of first class iron-clad vessels, capable of de- stroying a craft like the Merrimac. No apprehen- sion of the Merrimac going to sea is felt by government; but in times like these every con- tingency must be foreseen and every possibility guarded against. The navy yards and workshops of government are so fully occupied with the labors of the campaigns in progress, and government has so few employes who could be detailed to look after the construction of floating defences for the great harbors, that, in Mr. Stanton’s opinion, the object sought by the committee—namely the perfect protection of our harbors—can be most speedily and most cheaply attained if undertaken by the parties in interest themselves, who will, of course, hereafter be remunerated by government. The business of the Sub-Treasury was as fol- lows to-day :— Receipts. =o cast 1,000 ct 598,800 St 31 ‘The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $18,988,771 13, and the balances $1,078,083 66. Mr. Marsh’s receivership has been very success- ful, and a fortunate period for theroad. In closing his report he says:— In peed tho pipe pane: sting tn nebo Moy tte takes ort, Renny arg ja the stockholders: their Baa been returned to them in as good con- dition.as when fenaeatane secaoeaweer that the interest on the whole debt has been provided for, and the current interest punctually paid; and that tho directors have as- sumoa the mah: nt of the road under circunfstances more favorable have ever existed in its history.
