A Man be with $10,000 or $15,000. @ Boston Herald, Jun 6 } A case of mrt disappearance has ast occurred which has greatly puzzled the police. Mr. Jubn Caldwell, of Woodstock, New Brunswick, arrived in this citg, on Monday evening last, accompanied by his son,a young man, “He carries on quite an extensive business, being the proprietor of a hotel and a large country store, and he was on his way to New York for the purpose of bay- ing goods. Ho designed spending afew days in Boston, however, and put up at a hotel where he usually stopped when business called him to the city. He had fixed upon Wednesday afternoon as a time for going to New York, but at five o'clock, when he met his son by appointment, he stated that he should not leave until the next day. He shortly after left the hotel, since which time he has not been seen or heard from. He is known to have hai a large sum of money about him, from $10,000 to $15,000, and this fact leads to suspicions of foul play. He Wok a draft to the Bank of Commerce on Wednesday, and re- ceived seven one thousand dollar bills, but upou inquiry at the bank it appears that he was alone, Parties in Now York with whom he has business have heen telegraphed, Dut no*traces are found of hii in that city. The missing man is about sixty years Of age, five fect eight inches in height, and weighs two hundred pounds. His hair is black, slightly tinged with gray, and he has a dark complexion, dark eyes and a smooth f: His dress was a little peculiar, and would generally attract attention. He wore a black sack overcoat ,a shawl, dark ts, a black and red comforter around his ueck, und a lack Russian dog skin cap. The cap is curly and has no vizor. He must have been seen by some persons in the city Wednesday night, and the police are very desirous of obtaining information of him. New Telegraph Line. Richvmuy Srrincs, Va., Jan. 6, 1862. «The Richfield Springs and Herkimer telegraph line is mow in operation. FINANCIAL | AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, Jan. 6—6 P. M. The banks began business last Monday with less deposits and leas gold than they have to-day. From this time forth they ought to increase their reserve, if they are governed by a sound conservative policy, and do not undertake to make war either upon the government or upon the public, or upon their depositors. The subject of Treasury notes remains in statu quo. Most of the Jeading banks receive them on deposit. Buta few reject them. The government Quartermaster must have disbursed several hundred thousand dollars in these notes to-day. We learn that the Park Bank, among others, refused to receive them on deposit. ‘This business may lead hereafter to legislative interference. Money is abundant at seven per cent on call, and first class paper, which continues scarce, can be discounted at the note brokers’ offices at seven per eent. Ordinary business paper, representing the transactions of commerce in buying and selling, is pearce. The speculation in gold and exchange continues to flourish. To-day bills on London rose to 114 a 115, and bills on Paris to 4.95 a 972%. Gold is bought freely by the brokers at 2% premium, and very few houses are willing to sell under 2% a 3. It appears that a large number of merchants have been putting money into exchange on speculation. It is confidently predicted by the brokers that we shall see bills up to 118 a 120 and gold at 7 a8 per eent premium. Stocks took an upward start this morning, with ® large business, apparently well distributed ‘among the commission houses. The favorite spe. culative stocks of the day appear to be Galena, Toledo, Erie and Erie preferred and Burlington and Quincy. Mr. Morrison has been twenty years in the service of the Manhattan Com- pany, and enjoys the affection of its employes in fa very marked degree. The Nassau Fire Jusurance Company o Brook- lyn has declared a semi-annual dividend of ten per cent, payable on demand; the Etna Fire Insu- rance Company of Hartford, a dividend of six per cent, payable on demand, by James A. Alexander, No. 62 Wall street, agent for this city; the Read- ing Railroad, a dividend of seven per cent on the preferred stock, payable on the 15th inst. at the office of the Farmers’ Loan and Trust Company; the Irving Savings Institution, their usual interest payments of four, five and six per cent. The Chicago and Rock Island Railroad earned in December $107,839, againat $72,081 in December, 1860—an increase of $35,758. The Michigan South- ern road shows a gain of about $45,000 in Decem- ber. The earnings of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad line (three hundred and ten miles) were in December, 1861, $166,191 61, against $132,- 240 47 in December, 1860, showing an increase of $33,351 14, Considerable interest has been felt to know what course the Ohio and Indiana banks would pursue after the suspension of specie payments by the banks of the seaboard. The President of the Bank of the State of Indiana publishes the following card in the Indianapolis Standard :— As the suspension of the Eastern banks may create some uncertainty among the people of Indiana in regard to the policy that will be pursued by this institution, I consider it my duty faithfully to say that this action of these banks had been anticipated, and that their example will not be followed by us. Under no conceivable cir- cumstances will the Bank of the State of Indiana suspend specie payments. We have frequently given to the ple of the State the pledge that our notes should always be convertible into coin. This pledge we shall in good faith rulal, iH McCULLOCH, President.
